Social networking sites are more popular with UK internet users than pornographic ones, according to new figures from Experian Hitwise.

The internet research company says that in January sites like Facebook accounted for 12.46% of all online traffic.

That's the equivalent of 2.4 billion hits or one eighth of all web visits.

In comparison entertainment websites, including pornographic ones, accounted for 12.18% of traffic.

It's the first time social networking has overtaken entertainment in terms of popularity.

Of those, social network site Facebook accounted for more than half, or 56%, of visits.

Robin Goad, Experian Hitwise's Research Director said: "While social networks of course compete amongst themselves for users, many of those users have a presence on multiple networks.

"One in every eight people leaving a social network visits another one immediately after.

"Facebook, for example, is a key source of traffic for many smaller social networks, while almost a fifth of people leaving Twitter go on to visit another social network".

The news comes days after Facebook announced more than 30 million people in the UK had signed up as members.

Yeah and with all their BILLIONS they cannot get the Android or iPhone apps to work properly with their own website!!!

I know they never would be, but they really should be embarrassed by this!!!!
 
Porn really needs to get it's act together. For shame naked people making the beast with two backs!! For shame!!
 
I wonder what % porn actually takes up in the UK since that statistic is for all entertainment sites. It makes sense that social networking would have a lot more traffic since it's for everyone while porn isn't. Social networking is truly hear to stay and will continue to dominate for a very long time. It's fantastic for networking and finding out what's going on with friends. So many things you find out through Facebook that you wouldnt know otherwise.

Unfortunately for us, the iOS app is much better than the one for Android :(

Some people use Facebook this way but those people are seen as annoying by many others. I use it to keep track of friends I don't really see anymore, to watch pictures that my friends posted, etc. It's also useful to invite people to an event. I think it's a great tool, but that's all it is. I don't spend hours on it daily, plus every time I see a game on my "news" feed, I pick the option to hide this application forever. That's seriously annoying, but I see it as ads fro a free service. ;)

That is an incredibly narrow-minded view on social networking. I find it INCREDIBLY useful in keeping in touch with my friends in CA while I'm studying in IN (and hopefully in NYC this fall). Oh and also with my international friends and friends who are studying abroad. It's far easier than trying to call, email, skype, or text everyone just to stay in touch. With social networking, it feels like your friends are closer. You can easily keep in touch with what they're up to, including any latest updates, such as relationships. So many of my friends all of the world get into relationships that I would not have known otherwise until much later. I grew up with social networking with my first MySpace page back in early high school and know the importance of it. Every one of my friends use Facebook and so many conversations happen on Facebook. I wouldn't want to miss an important conversation.

One of the most important things that I've ever done on Facebook was make a page for my friend who went mysteriously missing for days. Facebook helped with spreading the word around the area that he was in. There were eventually up to 26,000 people who we aware of what was going on and many of them actively participated in the search. The Facebook page led to articles in the school newspaper and city newspaper and eventually he was found by another student who was part of the group. Social networking is an incredibly fast form of communication that can spread information like wildfire.
 
I don't use Facebook anymore. I've found this site to be more intrusive than porn. You think it's bad you get malware from porn sites? Well Facebook has their own moments of selling your information.

I wouldn't bash the people who use this site though. I don't mind when people use these sites for friends and family, and I totally respect and get that.

For me personally though, Sometimes it's just easier for me to give them a call or write them a letter, Than have a site where too much information can be shared.

Facebook/Myspace has it's uses, For everyone it is different. I think the site itself isn't always bad, It's how it's used that sometimes gives it the bad aspects. Everyone will live their life as they so choose. With or without social network sites. ^.^
 
How do they account for people visiting porn sites from host sites that mask IP's? Pretty sure Porn is way more frequently visited that Social Media. It is the reason the internet exists. =-)
