i'm completely surprised they didn't rename it iMultitask .. Wonder how long before apple tries to patent wallpapers ?? haha

I dont think that any mobile os has true multi-tasking. its all pause/suspend/play. there was an article in wired about this last month i think.
I love the little fact about OS4 regarding what phone it works on though... Only 3GS. LOL! Apple screws its stakeholders yet again. Guess it means they'll definitely have a new phone in the summer.
i disagree.. in my car i listen to slacker, have gmail running, and using navigation all at the same time. i wouldn't call that pausing..

yeah i saw that and thought... ridiculous. html5 is still growing and won't be main stream for A WHILE
Thought that was pretty hilarious. It's also rumored (read: not denied) they may add widgets in a future update. Unless they get a faster GPU on that puppy, Iphones are gonna start crawling pretty fast.

sure the devices can handle it, but giving old phones new features won't make them any money
The 3GS GPU is faster than the DROIDs. It won't be crawling anytime soon.
Yeah but you have to pay Apple for it. Gizmodo wrote a good post on the iAd deal. Apple Wants 1/8 Your iPhone Back, Don't give it to them!
edit: I should say I used the iphone os for a year before coming to android. My allegiances changed quickly.
sure when doing 3d graphics.. don't mistake GPU for CPU
It's not for the old phone. These are things they're going to roll into the next iPhone. But more importantly, what they can roll into the iPhone, they can roll into the iPad, thereby selling more iPads. If you have people on the fence about buying an iPad because it doesn't "multi-task" and there are no "folders," now you got them on the hook with this event. Get it? Now, they sell more iPads. Apple always makes money, make no mistake about that.

aaron19953 - he was commenting to the post saying the iPhone has a slower GPU then the Droid, no one was talking about the CPU. They use a very similar CPU though, both use the Cortex A8 architecture.
I really don't understand everyone's hate or whatever you want to call it for the iPhone. Apple may be a shiesty company but they make some good stuff albeit a bit overpriced sometimes. Really we should all be thanking the iPhone because without it Android wouldn't be what it is today. Sure the iPhone is just now adding some key features and has done this before, but Android is missing some really basic stuff to like voice commands/dialing over BT. The way Apple does stuff is they take their sweet sweet time perfecting things before releasing them, like copy and paste, sure it should have been on the first gen but if they didn't feel it was a good implementation then so be it. Why should it bother all of us? If your not using one then who really cares. But now look at how amazingly well it works, of course the majority of you haven't owned a iPhone so you can't really comment on it. I have and let me say c+p on it is light years ahead of Android, I mean it is so painstaking to use c+p in some apps on the Droid. Now Multi tasking is the next thing, I see it is not "true" MT but really if it does what people need it to do then again who cares right? Heck if it does it in a way that will save battery and keep performance from suffering to a minimal then that sounds pretty good to me.
If you guys really took the time to think about all of this instead of just bashing it then you would realize this is GREAT news for Android and us users especially. Now Google will be thinking of new features and ways to improve old ones. So to all of you (well most of you) instead of just being mindless lemmings and bashing the iPhone like it's the cool thing to do why don't you stop and think about it and if you have something constructive to say then post a reply. If not then just enjoy your hatred for the iPhone via PM with others who share in your enjoyment.
Really? Well, for one the 3GS does have a 600mhz omap2 CPU.. my droid has a 550mhz opmap2 CPU (overclocked to 1GHZ but still...).
As for the GPU, regardless of which has a faster, the iPhones implementation of OpenGL is 3 generations ahead of Android unfortunatly.

The other thing that makes the iPhone GPU work better is the smaller resolution. Less pixels to push.
No problem. I do it myself sometimes, just didn't know if you knew about the multi quote icon.My bad, I was just reading through the forum post by post and replying as I read them. I didn't read the entire thread. My memory ain't that great![]()

DING DING DING, YOU GET THE PRIZE !!
Most people completely forget about that..
for the record, i don't give two shits about good 3d performance.. That's not why i bought a phone.. the android OS was built around multitasking, the iphone is getting it shoehorned in.. Point being i suspect the apps will work better on a platform that was designed for MT in the first place.. just my $.02

Hi. You make some good points. Fragmentation is truly an issue with Android but I think they are realizing that and taking steps to remedy this issue in the future. Now that Android is up and running, I'm pretty sure hardware manufacturers will be careful to ensure that their devices are powerful enough to run the most current Android OS. So, in a word, I think this will be a non-issue in the future or, at the very least, a much smaller issue than it is now.
Also, I don't think anyone is denying that the iPhone is an awesome device. When it came out, there was nothing in the market that compare. However, Apple owners just have to face the fact that it's no longer the singular leader of the smartphone pack. It's just not. I own a Droid and it's the only smartphone I've ever owned. I was with AT&T/Cingular for 10 years before switching to Verizon and I never had a stong urge to own an iPhone. I always thought it was cool but it just didn't seem worth the money to me. However, I have played around with friends' iPhone's and I'm just not overly impressed. Yes, the UI is super smooth but I don't see much of a difference between the snappiness of it's OS and the OS on my Droid. I will admit that there are some Android devices like the G1 that can't hold a candle to the iPhone in terms of UI smoothness. But Nexus 1 and Droid owners are not impressed by the iPhone's "super smooth" UI. Futrure hardware devices from Android will surely be cutting edge in terms of processing speed and GUI (Evo 4G, HTC Incredible, Samsung Galaxy, Motori, etc) and pretty soon ALL Android devices will be just as "bugless" as the iPhone (and probably have less bugs depending on how well iPhone handles multitasking). Again, in terms of UI smoothness and refinement, I think that the Droid and N1 are pretty much on par with the iPhone right now.
Sure, the games on Android are NOTHING compared to the games you can get on an iPhone and if you're big into gaming, then iPhone is definitely the way to go. But, this is a short-sighted view b/c Android's market is growing faster than any other mobile OS' and you know the games will get better with time.
No doubt, the iPhone is a great device. But like another poster stated, it's just like having a gigantic app drawer (of course, iPhone OS 4 will now allow backgrounds but still no widgets). To me, owning an iPhone is like having a Droid and ONLY being able to access the app drawer. How boring! I spend as little time in the app drawer as possible and I couldn't imaging having a phone that is essentially "all app drawer, all the time".
