So what does this mean for Verizon customers?

You mean you would unleash it on the day everyone is hung over and a Friday? I would pick the 4th for the announcement. Dominate the news cycle. Friday releases are for stuff you dont want people paying attention to.

True but everybody should be up by noon :D

Then, I hope we see something on 1/4/10

This next phone that is supposed to come out around Christmas may very well be this crappy Motorola phone that looks like a Sidekick.
I think's it's the Moto Calgary coming to VZW this December. The titanium/zeppelin is a dual GSM/CDMA phone that may or may not come to the US. No matter, it still looks a step down from the Droid.

If you had a secret product that you wanted to unleash in January that would blow people's minds, what day would you do it on? New Years Day.
What are most americans going to be doing on New Year's Day? They will be watching parades and football at home. If I were Verizon, I would start advertising my new product then.

I have said it so much but one more time. If you want to apply logic there are two theories IMO.
1) Jan 31st. This would secure everyone that bought the phone in december into keeping what they purchased or paying full price for the new cool phone, in conjunction with making sure Moto meets their quantitiy for the Droid sold for the year.
2) Feb 15th. Since they are doing the return policy thru Jan 13th this would secure the 30 days past their return policy extension and catch all of those people. In addition it would give google more time to "test" all this new stuff and HTC time to get it integrated.

Time will tell but this is my theory. This is why I am avoiding even going into a Verizon store until the new year or solid proof is presented.

Mine was 99 for 2 years and 129 for 1 year and I'm on a family share plan and not the new every 2 line. Are you sure you line is eligible for upgrading?

Mykpfsu,

Are you serious??? I wonder why mine is different. I'm on a corporate plan with a 20% off my service as well. If I could get it for $129 for a one year contract I'd order it today. Did you go in store or online, cause I have been checking online.

Newspapers from Tawain and China that have been refrenced before say that it is coming to the US in January, and Europe in April.
Yes, there is a phone from HTC with snapdragon on board coming to the US in January. As of today, it's the Nexus One. Are you saying there's two phones coming this January?

Thats how it looks to me when I log in and try to upgrade my line. Maybe its due to the fact I'm off contract right now?

Yep. HTC is supposed to have a version of the Bravo coming to the US. The Nexus while built by HTC is not a HTC phone. The Bravo is also a different form factor then the Nexus.

Personally, I don't think this new info gleaned today really tells us anything. The blogosphere went crazy when it saw the new pics of the device, and they all immediately said Tmo and AT&T. Then they saw the FCC docs, and retracted a little bit and said Tmo only. Now many have retracted even further and said that this may be a developer phone only, and will never see the widespread light of day.

The only thing we know is rampant speculation is all over the place, and much of it is a just one big feedback loop.

It seems to be a given that the lesser Droid, the Moto Calgary, should be coming out soon. We've also seen some information about the Moto Zeppelin, and whether that may or may not be the Sholes tablet that is oft rumored. While we are all fixated on the Passion, with good reason, it may be that for us on VZW, the rumors of the next big thing may not be an HTC device, but may instead be this Sholes tablet, which has rumored dimensions similar to the much vaunted HTC HD2.

With Verizon in an all out Android assault, and with the loose lipped CEO, they have repeatedly said that as soon as devices are ready, they will release them. And even opened up the door and said that it was in Apple's court to bring the iPhone to Verizon. They don't seem to want to drop the ball anymore, and want to supplant the world class network with world class devices. (Although I believe the rumors of an LTE iPhone are 100% false.)

I still remain hopeful, but I'm certainly not married to any one manufacturer. If the next big device for Verizon is the Sholes tablet, so be it. I just want whatever is the best. If it happens to be the PassionC, so be it. If it happens to be both, even better. I feel pretty confident that we will get some kind of world class device.

That is a properly designed quote to mean anything you want it to mean. Verizon has been playing this game for far too long to tip their hand in the press.

Exactly! Whether or not Verizon has anything in the works with google, this is the exact quote we were going to get regardless. Nothing can be made of this quote.

Verizon Wireless said it isn't upset about Nexus One yet.
"We are still looking at different possibilities with our friend Google" -Verizon spokesman Jeffrey Nelson

from The Associated Press: Google tests new phone to profit from mobile Web

Discuss.

I think Google needs to be very careful how they move forward. Nothing announced about the Nexus so far is game changing or even interesting. Yet with Android being open development each wireless carrier could come out with their own version and tell Google to F off. Or simply stop selling Android devices. Heck HTC has done a good job of modifying Android, so good in fact it seems Google is trying to copy them (more homescreen panels, animated background).
I also wonder if Verizon really did turn it down and what the nexus means for the Google-Verizon partnership. I cant imagine Verizon got into that partnership knowing Google was going to go solo to compete with them.

Good point about Verizon! This is what I posted in another thread:

***MORE SPECULATION***

Many of you think the "Google" phone is a Great idea for Google...and it might as well be ...IF ITS A HUGE HIT!! If its not it might be suicide in a way for Google. Competing with your business partners, not so much HTC because of their close ties and so far they've produced all of there products but Samsung, Motorola, Sony, Acer or whoever else makes Android devices is GONNA DRIVE A WEDGE BETWEEN THEM!! Mark my words. Those companies will resent Google more and more every time they release a device which over shadows anything they've just developed. Sure its stimulates device development and competition is good for the consumer and blah blah blah...but it also makes these companies think of finding a different/better OS to compete against them....AND THAT WOULD BE BAD FOR BUSINESS!

Google going off on its own is a huge move that I hope they'd be ready for. Competing against Verizon is a rough game especially when that Apple iPhone exclusivity is gonna where off in a year or so. If Google was smart they'd keep as tight with Verizon as possible. If Verizon jumped behind a "Premier" release of a brand new iPhone with a larger AM OLED screen and a 1 ghz processor, that right there could change the game again. Then Google would need its partners again and I hope they'd still be there!!

While all the banter is nice, the only thing that matters is the January 13th deadline to return devices purchased for the Holidays.

Any leak indicating a better phone than what they have now is coming will result in returns. My guess is that a new device is announced/released around the MLK holiday.

Verizon is better than any of the companies/carriers at keeping the footsoldiers in the dark, so leaks dont happen. Also, 3 months is a long time in the cell phone game to go without a new release. (3 mos would be Feb 6). Something new will happen in January, but clamoring for news about it now is fruitless.

(Also, isnt it pretty clear the Nexus just a new G1, Android Developer Phone? Made for the T-Mobile bands, released to Google employees, running newest Android code. The logic just doesn't fit with a major network, ie Verizon/ATT, release. Google releasing it through Google when only one carrier will be compatible is NOT a market entering/game changing move. Doesn't help with marketshare, doesn't get advertised, won't be google voice based)

Google phone and the Bravo two different phones

I hope the Bravo will come to VZW in january seeing as im elligable for upgrade then. My wife is a tech manager for a VZW and so far she has not seen anything on this phone but she has said people are talking about it there at her store they know nothing more than we do. The nexxus one which is supposed to be unlocked for any wireless company will work but I dont know about yall but I cant afford to spend 5 to 600 dollars on a phone so I guess I will stand back and hope VZW gets the Bravo. I will let u know if I hear anything.

actually the nexus one as it past the FCC will not work on verizon. It will work on TMO gsm bands and does not support CDMA. Hopefully a CDMA version of the Nexus will be passing through the FCC soon though.

your right sorry just read that. If you go on phone arena the bravo and nexxus one is on there but the bravo was saying cdma is not available also but nobody knows anything for sure yet still all new news.

I highly doubt anymore Android phones will be hitting Verizons shelves soon. They just spent countless millions advertising Moto Droid. Verizon is WELL known for having crappy phones and this obviously does not look like its going to change. Yes I am calling the Moto Droid and Eris "crappy".

Moto Droid - Slide out useless keyboard, big bulky brick sized.
Eris - Outdated CPU from 2 years ago.

You just cant win with Verizon phones. They are always and will always be one or two generations behind other carries in smart phones.

Well, for sure, the Eris is the repackaged Hero which has been out for most of the year (longer?) and has a successor due within a few months. And this is a "new" Verizon phone.
