Root Soft-MOD by MMXTREM

ive managed to upgrade my phone through repeated updates from 1.6 to 2.3.3 v1.5 swiftdroid always using fastboot with dudemans excellent tutorials.
i am now wanting to try the soft mod by mmxtrem but am having problems flashing it through recovery. when i connect the phone to copy the zip/folder to the sd card the laptop doesnt recognize the card saying 'please insert disk into drive f', the sd card is mounted in the phone and connected via usb. i thought about trying to replace the system and boot img from swiftdroid with the extracted img's from soft mod and then flashing using fastboot but when i get to flash system img cmd says 'error cannot load system file'.
as i said i have never applied any updates or roms through recovery so this method although looks quite easy is completely new to me, has anybody got any ideas?
I had the same problem, my SD card was damaged.. guess you have used some application that formatted your card. Anyway, battery life is much better than the Mur4ik's version which pleases me a lot.

Oh I didn't set the APN settings, because I thought If I enable Mobile Data then it automatically sets up the settings for me. It was like that before on my 2.3.3 Cm7

I have gone back to Mur4ik's version, i found this version to be no different with the battery, infact when i connected the charger @ 40% the battery indicator shot straight upto 100% then 80 then 90 then 85. And when fully charged it dropped to 80% in less than an hour, so for me worse than Mur4iks. Also some of my apps dont run properly as the screen size is 130 instead of 160, this causes some apps/widgets to FC and makes the phone lagg when resizing apps/widgets that do work.

i need to install recovery and am following the guide at the top and have downloaded the img and need to know before i get in fastboot ...

...i think .

Will do, gimmie about 10 mins to download etc, and upload :)

Dudeman - Muchas gracias for updating the links and even more for all the awesome work you do for the GT540 community. It's difficult to quantify just how much me and my phone have benefited from your efforts. One question - when I update to SwiftDroid 1.8, will all my current data be lost? Forgive me if this is a dumb question. I might just be having a dumb moment. Thanks! Choripan

One other question. Since switching to the SoftMod update I have been having problems with my SD card. I can't say for sure that the card itself is not the problem, since I bought it right about the same time. It's a Patriot 32gb, and whenever the phone does any serious amount of data writing to the card it throws an error and says the card is damaged. If I use the card in my win 7 netbook, though, there is never a problem. Read times are a little slow, but writing seems all but impossible now. For example, I just tried to backup my system with clockwork mod and after a few minutes it threw an error while writing to disk. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Probably the phone is having issues writting to such a big card, also it may be a bottleneck happening, too much data to transfer , and the phone chokes itself and throws the error.

Not, if you upgrade from recovery.

No problems! I'm blown away by how many people have actually taken interest in this, never knew it was gonna be this big and time consuming :p I can't be 100% sure, because they're different ROM's, but I reckon you should do a backup in recovery first, then install Soft-MOD and see if your data is there. If it's not, then go into recovery and navigate to backup and restore>advanced restore>[the SwiftDroid v1.8 backup]>data restore and it should restore all your data :)

Hmm, I think maybe the card is a bit too big for it to handle, but then again I could be wrong.. D'you know what class the SD Card is?

I'm up and running now with the SwiftDroid 1.8 version. This ROM works well for me. Curious why so few people are using it.

Maybe it's not as popular, do you notice any issue, bug, or any improvement over "Stock" SwifDroid?

The main issue I had with the stock version of SwiftDroid - and this is based on 1.6, I think - was that it oversized the screen resolution, making various widgets and even text look bloated and slightly distorted. There may have been a fix for this somewhere, but I was never able to find it. Also, initially MMXTREM had some nice bug fixes (like the battery indicator) and seemed to run more smoothly on my GT540. In fact, it still does.

I would really lije to maintain a collection of various ROMs to test them and play them off one another. They're all really great work, and I appreciate the effort the developers make to release them to the GT540 community. Sadly, my SD card won't let me make a direct backup (it always throws a write error, even in recovery), so I have to stick with just one. I wish there were a way to do a clockwordmod type backup, but push it to my laptop through USB. For now, though, I work with a single ROM, and so far MMXTREM has been worth the commitment,

So you'd recommend Soft-MOD over SwiftDroid because it's more stable?

Not sure I'm qualified to compare. I used a previous version of SwiftDroid for a week or so before switching to Soft-Mod. I loved SwiftDroid for the obvious reasons, the biggest being the very fact that it exists. But that screen res issue was a challenge for me. And there seemed to be a lot of bugs (all of which are detailed by you in that awesome first post). I haven't tried the most recent version, mostly because I don't feel the need to give up what I've got.

Right now Soft-Mod is running perfectly. And I mean *perfectly*. Install was a breeze because of the precise instructions. In the last version sometimes I would experience "touch lag." Not sure what else to call it: I touch the screen and the phone lags in response. There seems to be less of that now. But of course I've only been running the new Soft-Mod since last night.

My only issue at this point is the SD card. It's a 32gb Patriot, large enough to accommodate a serious mp3 collection and a bazillion apps. But it throws an error every time I try to write any significant amount of data. If I copy to the card directly from my Win 7 laptop, there is never a problem (though Windows always wants to scan it for errors on insertion). Yet in the phone it's a dog. It can't take too much USB file movement without staying that the card is damaged. It freaks out if I try to do a clockworkmod recovery backup. It locks up completely when I try to download podcasts with DoggCatcher or any other app. I can deal with it most of the time, when I'm just reading data. But, man, it's frustrating to write to the phone.

This could all be rooted in the card itself. The only thing I can say is that the problems started when I installed Soft-Mod. I don't recall having them with straight SwiftDroid.

Ah I see, I think Soft-MOD just has a few issues with large SD cards, or maybe it's the class of your SD Card; can you check? On the card there should be a little number in a circle or just a number on its own. That number should be 2, 4, 6 or 10.

Attached is an image of my dysfunctional micro SD card, taken from my hotel room in Trujillo, Peru, about 5 minutes ago. Seems like it's class 4. Is SwiftDroid 1.8 comfortable with large Micro SDs? If so that would be reason enough to switch back, assuming I can fix the screen res thing.

I've attached images of mine and my brothers SD card, both phones running SwiftDroid v1.8. Mine's the class 4 and his is the class 2. I think it's either Soft-MOD not liking such a large card, or the card is just too large for the phone to handle..
