Root *SOLVED* Certain app's closing down constantly to home screen without warning

Phone details
HTC Desire
Rooted, S-OFF with custom partition
Running CM7
SD Card with 1Gig Ext 3 partition for all my app's

All the rooting and flashing Rom's was done a couple of months ago and all has been running fine since then.

For the last 2 or 3 days several app's have been closing themselves within 20 - 30 seconds of starting - they are not "force closing" and giving me any kind of notification - they will just hang for a second or two then it will bounce me straight back to my home screen.

I have a few .avi files on my sd card and usually play them with Moboplayer - last couple of days it will only play 20 - 30 seconds at a time before closing itself without warning. I can restart the file and it will last for another 30 seconds or so before the same thing happens.

Also have a couple of games that have been doing the same thing - a 3D baseball game and a 3D golf game - similar story - 20 - 30 seconds in and they shut down with no warning.

Other games will play ok - like a 2D tower defense game and my music seems to play ok.

Can anyone suggest a program / app / log or report I can use or access to try and pinpoint what is causing this?

It seems like apps and games that need a bit more juice from the phone wont run properley - .avi files and 3D games. I have been able to run these games and play the .avi files previously without problems - just in the last couple of days I have had problems.

I had previously been using some of the different CPU govenors within cyanogenmod settings but to the best of my knowledge they are back where they were previously.
So far I have tried fixing the permissions, wiping the cache and Dalvik cache from recovery.

Anyone know of any apps or logs I can refer to in order to find out what is causing this?

Any help would be appreciated.

What are your RAM levels when this is happening?

If it happens again, if you reboot and try again, what happens?

Hi, Im not sure how to track the RAM usuage while it is happening however using "Quick System Info" I had a look at the memory stats.

After a reboot they were

Total 406Mb
Free 199
Idle 7.95Mb
Threshold 24Mb
Buffers 8.74Mb
Cached 191Mb

After reboot and noting these figures I started an avi file which played for about 25 seconds then checked the figures again which were

Total 406Mb
Free 208Mb
Idle 17.18Mb
Threshold 24Mb
Buffer 9.49Mb
Cached 191Mb

Are these the figures you were asking for?
Thanks for your help
Alan

slight change in the figures once the .avi stops playing

Total 406Mb
Free 205Mb
Idle 19Mb
Threshold 24Mb
Buffers 9.4Mb
Cached 185Mb

cheers

Is that stopping by doing the original issue? If so, RAM is not the issue

Not sure what you mean by this?

I dont know whether these numbers are good or bad but they do not seem to change much just before the issue happens or just after it,

Any ideas?

ok, so downloaded Android System Info from the Market (Free)
Took note of the time and started a couple of .avi files, let the app crash back to the home screen - repeated that a couple of times.
Opened Android System Info and checked the logs it had auto created and checked for the times I started the video files.
Looked through the log after that and noticed there was another service that kept starting every 60 seconds - at the point this service started it crashed the video file.
Went into settings and had a look at the running processes.
Google maps had an extra process that ran every 60 seconds - it was only visible for the first 15 seconds then it disappeared but it would reappear as a running process after 60 seconds.
There is a setting within Google Latitude that, when ticked, it will try and update your location (GPS and or WiFi) - obviously it was doing this every minute.
Unticked this and everything is working again.
To the best of my knowledge I hadnt ticked this recently so im wondering if it became ticked automatically during an update.

Not sure how to edit the title of this but could some kind mod edit it if neccessary and add "SOLVED" to the start.
Cheers

You just double click to the right of the title from teh forum page to edit it.

Good find.

i shouldnt of done that. do you have a task killer or anythng like that installed?

No dedicated task killer installed, have read too many conflicting reports about whether they needed on android or not and tbh havent really had the need for one, yet.
Just to be clear, I didnt attempt to kill the process / service that was running - im guessing if I did that but didnt change the settings in the app then the process would have just started again at some point.

I just asked Google Latitude to stop trying to log my location by unticking an option within the settings for the app. I never really wanted my location checked every minute of the day!

yeah i understand that, the only reason i was thinking it could be an auto task killer is if latitude used up more memory space than was available so android killed other tasks to make room for it.

I see, well, as it stands I still dont know what was causing the other app's to close when this process ran so in that respect im still none the wiser. If it had of been a process I needed / wanted to run I'd have looked into it a bit further to try and get the phone to allow both to run with no negative impact but for now im happy.

Hi alfoldem,
I'm having the same problem but can't seem to find the setting. Would you be able to point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
T
