Root some basic rooting questions

hey guys i just had a few questions for rooting my evo 4g. the only reason why i want to root is to use setcpu and titanium backup, and battery conservation purposes.

can i just root my phone using unrevoked while staying on my current software without downloading a custom rom.

because i dont want to go through hurdles just to update my phone when updates come out.

am i able to do this

Yes you can use the stock rom. But most if not all updates from Sprint generally break root.

thanks for the fast reply i appreciate the information, the only problem i have with the phone is the battery life isnt good on the evo 4g after a while. i will play a game for a half an hour and a 50% drain will happen.

You can keep the stock ROM but you can not accept updates from Sprint because they can break root and cause bigger problems. They also have ROMs out that are stock but with all the bloatware removed if that is what you want TB for.

Mine isn't all that great either. I have the luxury of being near a charger most of the day so I haven't focused much on it. There's lot of posts here to help you try and get better life.

it doesnt matter if it breaks the root i will just root it again when a updated root comes out, am i able to just do it like that?

I was thinking exactly like you when I first got my Evo, but I have since changed my mind.
Using a custom rom and kernel greatly improved my battery over just using the stock rom and kernel along with setcpu. IMO a lot of the custom roms are better looking and run better as well. Once you are rooted, you can make a backup, then try some other roms to see for yourself. If you are not convinced, you can always restore back to the stock rom in the end.

I used my phone moderately all day yesterday (including some games for 30-40 mins on lunch), and when I put it on to charge at night before bed, I had 50% battery remaining!

I'm not sure, but I dont think its wise to update through sprint on a rooted phone. Not sure it will 'only' break root without other issues. Can anyone confirm this?

I believe when you flash clockwork recovery or amon-ra, you remove the ability for the phone to correctly install an ota update. I could have sworn I read in a thread the stock recoverys main purpose is for ota updates, thats it. So when an ota update downloads and tries to install through recovery, it poops out because the stock recovery isn't there anymore.
Grrr, wheres Akazabam, he's the guru on recoveries....o fart, he's the guru on everything!

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong.

yeah you are right. those recoveries will prevent you from accepting any ota's. i believe i tried just for the sake of trying and it gave me an error and it would not go through.

on that note accepting ota's is never good especially if you want to keep your phone rooted. for one the ota's usually will close any exploits that had allowed root access. to regain root will depend on the great devs over at xda. but finding a new exploit from the new ota could take awhile. it could be anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. so those who unrooted will have to wait.

however, those who kept root will only have to wait for the devs to come up with the ota built into the rom. already we are seeing plenty of gingerbread roms with working 4g! hopefully when the new evo comes out, we will get plenty of roms that are ported to our evo's (this will tie me over until i'm eligible for an upgrade):D
