Root some noob questions about roms and themes

KevTN

Newbie
I have read a ton of things here and on some other boards, but I am a bit confused about a few things. I am thinking of doing a rom. (I am rooted with z4).

Ok my experience with this is ZERO!! LOL So I am nervous about it to say the least. Now for my goals on why I want to/thinking about putting the rom on. In short battery life. Mine sucks!

Here is what I have so far:
OTA 2.2.1, Launcher Pro, Z4 root, Titanium back up, wireless tether. liquid battery, terminal emulater. Beautiful widgets

Like I said I want to get better battery life. I would also like to keep using the wireless tether.

With all that said....
1)when you do a new rom can you use apps off the market?
2)how much time should I set aside to put on a new rom?
3)with the stock sbf should that be on my computer or the phone if I brick to unbrick?
4)Is there a stable rom out there that does not need to deox?
5) any other suggestions for a non programer LOL (Anyone around Chattanooga Tn LOL)

Thanks for any information...Have a Great New Year.

1.yes
2.depends on level of knowledge but just starting off ....alot lol
3.rsd lite 4.8 or higher should be installed on your pc as well as having the current sbf files handy....rsd is the program that you run the sbf through
4.apex 1.3.1 is my reccomedation extremely stable and fast and reliable/it comes deodex so no need to play areound with that ...most roms and such are deodex now
4.read ,read,read, and read this
http://androidforums.com/droid-x-al...ing-custom-rom-theme-how-unbrick-droid-x.html
also in that guide it may say to use 928 to deodex im not sure if its been updated but dont use it its not compatible with the new versions .....like i said before there is no need to mess with deodex as most roms deodex for you.hope this info helps you some and welcome to the forum...Happy New Year:D

2) it took me like 20 - 30 minutes to install my first ROM (ApeX) installation went roughly as follows..
A) download ROM using ROM manager (free from the market)
B) create a nandroid backup using Droid X Bootstrapper (2 bucks from market or free. from koush's website)
C) backup all your apps using titanium backup
D) in ROM manager select install ROM from SD card and browse to the ROM you want to install
E) a popup will appear that will give you 2 check boxes 1. Wipe data and cache 2. Backup current ROM. Just check number one as you have already created a backup in step B..

Past that it will just go through the install process. keep in mind that all ROMs are a little different that is just a rough outline I always recommend following the developers install instructions most of the time they will be included in the ROM announcement thread.

4) No reason to manually deodex. Most ROMs will automatically deodex your device.

As long as you keep backups in place you will be fine... its really not as difficult as it seems just read up on the process and pull the trigger. I highly recomend ApeX for your first ROM its very stable very fast and I get much better battery life on top of that when I installed I didn't have to wipe data and cache so it was a really easy transition its an awsome ROM to cut your teeth on.

Thanks guys...I guess I will look at Apex 1.3.1. it will probley be later this week...

I appreciate ya'lls help

If you're going to install a rom.....

BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP....

Backup at least twice with recovery/rom manager (use names that make sense), then backup from Titanium.
