Root Some noob questions.

Hi,

Spent the last few days reading lots of threads, here, xda and modaco. But I'm struggling to find an answer.

Is it possible to root a desire without being connected to a pc? For the life of me I can't get a phone to connect via usb. My logic, quite probably wrong, is that if I can flash a new rom then perhaps I can solve the problem?

Am i wrong to assume this and it's more likely to be a hardware than software issue?

Any advice or links to a thread somewhere would be much appreciated.

Ta'

if you do a factory reset and it still cannot connect then i would assume its hardware but it could be a corrupt misc (usb brick). the only way to fix that is by flashing an RUU if you are not rooted

have you tried connecting it to a different computer?

does the device manager on the pc see it at all?

if you enable debug mode does the pc see it as an adb device in device manager?

You can root without a PC but I wouldn't recommend it, it'll be a longwinded process (making backups etc without a USB cable will suck :P)

how?

visionary++ is an app that will give him a os based root solution but he will not be able to flash roms etc or make nandroids

i dont know any other way of rooting

Yeah tried a different pc, both pc's see the phone in HBOOT as android 1.0 and its there in device manager.

I get stuck after that, I assume I need to get some sort of recovery / utility onto the sd card as I cant connect via Adb either (but that could be lack of knowledge)

when you boot into android and connect the device, make sure you enable debugging in "applications > development"

does windows see it connected as android debug or "myHTC"

It doesn't achieve perm root, but rom manager would only need temp root to boot into Clockworkmod, but I would no way recommend that because if things go wrong, you could be REALLY stuck - especially if you accidentally wipe the SD card via Fake flashed CWM, deleting the update.zip that IS CWM. Instant RUU

Messy!

fake flash wouldnt work as recovery isnt engineering or hasnt been modified to allow flashable zips

It now sees it as Myhtc, and debugging is enabled.

you can probably root this then,

however you need to fix misc if usb is bricked

you have 5 options with varying difficulty,

1. root device with unrevoked then s-off and flash a fixed misc.img via fastboot
2. root device with unrevoked and try and fix usb brick by following this guide [DEV] USB-BRICK FIX - Restore USB function on your bricked Desire - xda-developers
3. RUU your device using the corresponding RUU/PB99IMG from shipped-roms.com
4. if there is not an RUU for your device you can try creating a goldcard then using teppics downgrader to downgrade the software to 2.1 then root run any 2.2 RUU you want
5. send it to HTC as a warranty repair if you are using the software that came on the device

Hmmm maybe, I'd have to test that, which I will not be doing.

Certainly not the case on the Desire HD. You just visionary and rom manager. Thats it. Although most DHD guides recommend S-off, its not required either. So no engineering recovery there..

But if it does work on desire, it would be a silly thing to do.

e

Thanks so far,. trying 1 and unrevoked is going nowhere at the mo'.

If you say misc is corrupt and unrevoked 3.21 checks misc first, could this be the problem?

Can I get round this be d/l a different unrevoked?

yes but it depends of the level of corruption
if you cant root due to misc error then you will need to go down the downgrade method

problem is you need to create a gold card to do that and im not sure how you do it with no usb connectivity

whats the sw version you are on currently?

I agree. Of the misc errors we have seen it may just be easier to downgrade anyway cause often that's the most sure fix but usually its the last step.

Can always temp root and titanium backup first as that may work if it will without busybox

Thanks - I guessed that was the case but it seems to be working, up to the "signature error".

I've got the goldcard and update.zip onto the sd card, I can access recovery etc but then it falls over as mentioned. I was starting to be encouraged ;-)

Maybe all I need is a .93 equivalent of the update file, then I could S-off etc..... perhaps.

There is no such equivalent. That rooting method was defunct before 0.93 came out I'm afraid.

Rasta wants to know your android software build / version

ok

right

run this EDIT damn slightly older client version. ill upload the newer one

rename it to PB99IMG.zip and put it on the root of your sdcard then boot to bootloader and apply it

Sorry about that, had to drop my lad of at his nans ;)

I assumed unrevoked replaced the other option. Maybe an alternative would be to downgrade hboot as suggested and use the "old" method if that's working.
