Hi

I purchased my HTC Desire Z here in Canada from Bell yesterday and so far it's a great phone... however, I have experienced three things that I'm concerned about

i. My phone randomly sent an old text message to one of my contacts today that I sent earlier today to them that I deleted.. not sure how it managed to send it since it was no longer on my phone.. but the Desire Z sent an old message without me typing or approving it

ii. On my BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 I was easily able to set up my university e-mail. The school uses Horde as their e-mail client. Does anyone have any experience with setting up Horde?

iii. I noticed that I can't send out e-mail messages on POP accounts over WiFi. If I do, it takes at least 10 minutes if I'm lucky, but when on 3G they send automatically. I'm using the original mail app that came on the phone. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Several users have reported similar incidents. The cause is unknown, it doesn't affect everyone, but it may be related to another known SMS issue that Google are working on a fix for.

Does anyone have any experience with setting up Horde?

Sorry, no.

I noticed that I can't send out e-mail messages on POP accounts over WiFi.

You usually need to configure the outbound server to that of your wifi provider, as most mobile carriers don't allow access to these from outside their own network as a precaution against spam. More details can be found here.

I see that Slug has already sent you the link to the thread I started regarding this issue. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask.

As for the SMS issue, I have never experienced it on my phone.

Also, how do I make it so that when I download apps they are installed on my SD card and not my phone's internal memory?

I'm having the opposite problem- e-mails aren't sending when on WiFi

When using my carrier's (Bell) SMTP server, emails will not send on WiFi because the internet provider (Shaw) does not allow these emails to be sent. If I use my internet provider's SMTP server, emails will not sent while not on WiFi because the carrier does not allow these emails to be sent over its network. I believe your issue is the first one. The internet provider may restrict other SMTP servers as well.

There is no elegant solution for this because you will switch between WiFi and the carrier constantly. If the SMTP server is blocked by one of the carrier or internet provider, you will have issues. The only good solution is to find an SMTP server that both the carrier and internet provider will allow. Gmail or Hotmail are two such SMTP servers. With a Gmail account, you can configure it so that the from field of your outgoing emails is whatever you like. Your sent emails will appear to be sent from that email account instead of Gmail. I'm not sure if Hotmail has this feature, as I have not looked into it.

Sending emails via Gmail is the best workaround that I have found. I actually forward my incoming email to Gmail just because I like the Gmail app better than the Mail app and I get push mail with Gmail on Android phones. One issue you may have is with syncing as your sent email will be in your Gmail account and will not show up in your sent items folder from your regular email account.

how do I make it so that when I download apps they are installed on my SD card and not my phone's internal memory?

You can't. However, once installed an app can be moved to SD by going to Settings/Applications/Manage applications, selecting the app and using the appropriate option button.

Notes:
(a) This doesn't move the app completely. Some data remains in internal storage by necessity.
(b) Not all apps can be moved, only those allowed to do so by their developer. Also, system apps can't be moved.
(c) It's not a good idea to move widgets to SD, as the OS scans the card during startup which delays access (the "preparing SD card" notification). If a widget can't load during this time it often throws a hissy-fit. :)

Thanks for the prompt and helpful responses, greatly appreciated!

I took your advice and decided to forward my mail from my school e-mail to be received from my work e-mail. Works like a charm.

Thanks again!
