Help space at top of home screen

i took off the google search bar on the home screen, but now there is the big empty space at the top that you cant put apps or anything. Is there a way to add more icons to the screen or am i stuck with a 4 x 4 layout? i dont feel like using adw or similar programs.

yeah i didnt want to use a launcher, but nova is nice, keeps that stock look but gives me what i need.
