Special cable?

Does the Note II require a special cable? I only have 2 cables with micro-USB connectors, one from my old phone (HTC Inspire 4G) and one from my Note II. They look the same but are obviously not-one works with the Note II and the other doesn't. So my question is, which is the special cable? (By works I mean my PC recognizes the Note II when I connect it with the 'right' cable but not with the other. I was thinking of buying a generic USB/micro-USB cable as a spare but if it won't work with the Note II then I'd be wasting my money.)

Thanks.

Hello and welcome to the forums. i see you are having a problem with a android device. well to tell you the truth the device should have come with a cable. but the cable isn't the question to help you need the drivers from the device to download to the pc/laptop so the laptop/pc can see the android device this driver would be a adb. without this driver you would not be able to use the android device even if you had the correct cord for usb. so may i ask did you download the drivers :smokingsomb:

But neither of you answered my question. Did you read it? I have a good cable-it came with the phone. I've downloaded the drivers-the phone connects to my PC just fine when I use the cable that came with it. Now I want a spare cable. I found one that *looks* fine but doesn't work. It's not a bad cable as it works with the phone it came with-so which cable is the special one, the one that came with my Note II or the one I found with the other phone? That's my question-and it's the *only* question I asked in this post. I guess I'll have to post again since others will assume you've answered my question when you didn't. thanks.

Not all cables are made equally you might say. It is a hit and miss with some of them. The one that doesn't 'work' is not a good cable as there is something wrong with it if it cannot connect and be used with multiple devices. I have several USB to microUSB cables and even the Samsung OEM ones can be bad. I had one go bad just recently for no explanation. Worked with one Note 2, but not the other (and it's Samsung's own cable).

Look, it's a simple question-why are you making it complicated? Does the Note II require a special cable or will a standard USB cable work to connect it to a PC? See how simple it is?

NeoGrandizer answered it perfectly. No, it's not a special cable. However, not all cables are created equally nor do they last forever; being able to charge doesn't always mean it's capable of transferring content to/from a PC.

Think of it like a car. They all have 4 wheels and can get you from point A to point B. However, some are better at hauling a bed full of mulch (transferring content) while some get you better mpg and others have better A/C.

The same is partially true of cables. Yes, they are all micro usb cables and are, generically speaking, all the same. Thicker wire, quality solder joints, etc all play a difference (but good like finding a manufacturer that explains those when you buy them). Find a quality cable and you'll be fine.

Now you, sir, answered my question in your second sentence. That's all I wanted to know-which of the cables was standard & which was non-standard. Apparently the one from the other phone is non-standard or defective. It's not a charge-only cable as you speculate (I don't think I'd consider those standard but can see where some people might) as it connected the other phone okay while the other phone was working. But you're wrong about NeoGrandizer. The one question he never answered was whether or not the Note II requires a non-standard cable. You did. Thank you.

I only have 2 cables with micro-USB connectors,... one works with the Note II and the other doesn't.
The answer to that is:
I would guess you have a bad cable.
Which means no special cable is needed... Or maybe you couldn't see that for some reason?

I found one that *looks* fine but doesn't work. It's a bad cable...
I've corrected this sentence for you.

This is what I've tried to explain in my post.
Not all cables are made equally you might say. It is a hit and miss with some of them. I have several USB to microUSB cables...
You seem to have missed this point in which no 'special' cable is mentioned. It was generalized. Sorry you couldn't pick up on that (which others did).

We were trying to explain to you that no special cable was needed. That you had a 'bad' cable which you fail to accept. We were trying to expand you knowledge in this regards.

I agree NeoGrandizer and Kelmar. I used to work at Best Buy and I would get questions all the time about usb cables. There really is no generic usb cable per se. It depends on the device you are using will determine the type of usb able as some of them charge while others will only transfer files.

Not sure if the generic ones will work or not to be honest. I always get my cables from my phone provider. They have never steered me wrong.....and I had my og htc evo's battery burned by a generic cable before, so.........
