Spica on 2.1

@rogdor

I was reading the instructions to flash the LK mod and was wondering when you flash the PDA file in odin do you leave the .ops box, bootloader box, etc empty? and just have the pda box filled in with the file? hope this made sense. thanks

Yeah, if you're flashing the LK mod (after your firmware flash of course), then in Odin you just flash the PDA file, although you do keep the .ops file in place, just not the other .tar files. Easiest way to do it is only have what you need in the directory you're running Odin from.

Do I unzip LK2-02-1_update.zip and then put it in the root of the sd card?
When I flash i5700_LK2-02_PDA.7z with Odin do I need a spica.ops file to or is the PDA file the onlyfield to be filled in. Once again thanks.

Don't unzip LK2-02-1_update.zip, just put it in on your SD card. When you flash the PDA file (and yes, keep the spica.ops there, leave the rest of the fields empty) it will reboot your Spica onto a recovery screen. It's from that recovery screen that you can now make changes to your system by loading an appropriate zip file (in this case LK2).

After you do this, you can reboot to recovery whenever you like, it's useful for a few things, like installing SamdroidMod or clearing caches.

Well, managed to update the spica to 2.1! :)
Wasn't as bad or as scary as I thought it would be!

Now a few questions...is it really necessary to "root" the phone? Anyone know of a good home screen replacement? Not the biggest fan of how the widgets and icons don't really line up on 2.1

Root isn't necessary, but you get a few key and important advantages:

  • You can clean up your phone and remove apps that came with it that you don't use (Samsung's battery draining "Pantheon" home launcher for instance). SamdroidMod is an easy way to do that.
  • You can fully backup your apps and settings (Titanium Backup is excellent).
  • You can enable all apps on the Android Market (custom / beta firmwares are usually blocked from "protected" apps).

So yeah, once you've gone as far as loading in a custom firmware, you might as well get root too.

BEERKAN , give me some help : i don't understand what did you mean with put all that file into a spica.ops ( you refered at a folder named spica.ops? ) .The folders don't have extensions ..... Be more specifically !
I receve a message from program when i put the destination of spica.ops , etc : it is in chinese :D :)) ... . When i press that 3 buttons , the program conected my phone with pc but them it is disconected :( X(X(X(X(
Give me some help please !!! The actualy soft is so wrecked :((
I'm looking at your install pictures and it looks like you have the wrong spica.ops file. So create a new one using notepad. Cut and paste

0,boot
1,Sbl
2,logo
3,zImage
4,datafs
5,factoryfs
6,cache
7,
8,modem
9,efs

save as Spica.ops

Now load that file into Odin. Never mind the errors in Chinese. If Odin does not see your phone, try another USB port. Try disconnecting USB and try Power On/Off your phone. Try Reboot PC. Odin can be fussy.

Thanks all for the helpful posts. I now have 2.1 and root on my spica. When my phone starts up theres now a Samdriod pre-boot screen and by holding the correct keys I can go into recovery mode. As a side note for anyone who doesn't know when you download *.7z file it needs to be uncompressed with http://www.7-zip.org/

Anyone know of some gps software and maps I can use on the phone now?

any help would be appreciated--thanks Cent

so i got the samdroid mod going on my spica. its not as blazing fast as i thought it would be with launcher pro. what things should i include/excude while using samdroid kitchen to get my spica running fast. also could someone recommend a good task killer so i can save memory and battery power. as a note when i installed the samdroid mod it went black after the boot animation. to solve this problem i just booted in recovery mode and cleared the data/cache. after that i rebooted and everything has been good since.

where the heck can i find live wallpapers that i can download? i'm especially looking for the earth rot one

Lots of live wallpapers are on Market.

Try TasKiller Pro and use the widget to kill tasks. You can ignore vital tasks, and enable AutoKill when screen is off.

Update:

I first loaded I570EXXJE1 and then rooted it with LK 2.02 as per Rogdor's post above. I had so many app crashes and general annoyances that I thought I had nothing to loose but try another firmware. So -- Rogdor mentioned Beerkan was using I570EXXJD4 so I re-flashed my phone with this one and then re-rooted with LK 2.02 and what a difference. I haven't had any force close for apps and once I loaded LauncherPro for my home screen this phone kicks butt.

i have not noticed this question as of yet, but i have "accidentally" turned on airplane mode just from having my phone in my pocket. im guessing that when i sit, it puts just enough pressure on the power button to power down the phone. I am hoping there is a way to remove the airplane mode option out of that menu that pops up. or if you can disable airplane mode completely. any ideas guys?
