Spint Hero Battery Issues known fix Fix.. charges faster lasts longer

The phone should sleep when screen turns off, should not take 24 hours for that, if it was taking that long your battery would already be dead, bottom line the so called fix does not work , if your lucky it will last a few days but then goes right back to crappy battery life. HTC needs to address this ASAP

i never said it took 24hrs,, thats just my observation. But if you only leave the screen off for 5min, that is a significantly short time compared to the total time awake.

If you followed the instructions correctly this will work. It might take more than 5 minutes to show a drop

he might mean that when he first turned it on, he was using it, and the awake time was 100%, used it on and off and then after 24 hours his awake time was 10%, because you probably use your phone right after you turn it on, so it will stay 100% until you let it sleep for a while, but if you use it for 20 minutes before you let it sleep, you have to let it sleep 40 minutes before youre awake time drops to 33%, wake it up and use it for 10 minutes and its back up to 43%

not if just rebooted the phone . I shut my phone off and removed the battery , rebooted , let sit with screen off for 1/2 hour , come back , still 100 % and this is after the so called fix , I have attempted this fix several times and hard reset 3 times . the fix works each time for about 3 days max then goes right back to 100 % all the time . Complained at the Sprint store and they gave me a free 2nd battery

Thank you.

This is a SMART PHONE i figured that i didn't need to dumb down the response, but anyway....

Also I've had this fix implemented since October 17th and have not had it revert back i follow the instructions here: Source (+fix) for hero's poor battery life

Where in the faq it states:
Q) I have tried everything and my phone still won't sleep?
A) You are doing something wrong.

Restore your phone and try again. It has been mentioned that possibly the pop-up notifications from handcent and/or advanced task killer free are causing the phone to not sleep.

bottom line the so called fix does not work , if your lucky it will last a few days but then goes right back to crappy battery life. HTC needs to address this ASAP

Also read other forums htc and sprint are aware of this and are working on a fix that will be implemented first quarter of 2010

This "fix" did fix at least my battery issue. I tested it yesturday when I was at work, usually I have to bring my USB cord to give it a quick jolt by lunch time. I was pleasantly surprised at the results.

I woke up at around 5:40am that morning and took my phone off the charger (I usually play some Pandora radio to wake me up a bit). Hit the road by 6:12am. My Hero lasted not only ALL day, but by the time I came back home around 10pm the same day, my Hero was still around 40% power. MAJOR improvement from how long my battery use to last. Once again, I have to thank the OP and the android community. I love my phone even more now.

Edit: Oh and just to add I used my Hero throughout the day pretty heavily, lots of texting, media, web browsring and I even played some games on my device a few times.

I have now deleted handcent from my phone , and am back using the factory sms , there is NO difference betgween the 2 anymore, the only way I can get this so called fix to work is to totally do a hard reset of my phone , disbale the factory sms and download handcent, bnut when I do this everything works GREAT for only a day or 2, then the same exact rotten battery life issue pop up again , so I might as well just use the factory sms as I like it better anyway, I have hard reset my phone 4 times , enough is enough, its a pain in the butt

Just wanted to post this real quick. The fix worked for about 3 days for me. Then it stopped. Well, I gave up doing another factory reset. Well, today I went in to look and noticed that, after not soft resetting my phone for 3 days, it is at a 60%...weird...Its like the fix started working again when I gave up on it...

Sleep Fix: Hold down the Power button (same as your End Call key), Select Power off, once the phone has completely powered off count to 60 and hit the power button again to reboot the phone, as the phone loads play with the trackball until the lock screen comes up, unlock the screen and continue to toggle the trackball until the phone completely loads, click the Power/End Call key to put the phone to sleep.

This should fix the issue, check your Up time and Awake time, if not repeat the steps I detailed above. Do not allow the phone to sleep on its own, keep moving the trackball while the phone loads, also if there are notifications on the upper tray clear them as sometimes these will keep the phone from going to sleep.

Make sure the phone is not plugged into an external power source and all notifications are cleared. Let the phone sit for a couple of minutes and then check on the Up time and Awake Time, if it still reads 100%, repeat the steps above, if problem persists comment below.

It has been mentioned here before, and I just want to confirm this behavior...THE PHONE DOES NOT SLEEP WHILE PLUGGED INTO THE CHARGER. EVEN WITH the screen turned off. So if you are seeing high awake time % after charging, it should be rebooted after charging. What I do is plug in the charger when I go to bed...last night it was at 18% awake time. When I got up this morning, it was at 49% and fully charged. I then turn the phone off (soft reset) and back on. I then keep it from sleeping during the boot process. Stupid to have to do this? YES...but it works and I am ok with it till there is an HTC fix. Heck, I reboot my computer every day, I guess it's a good idea to reboot my smartphone (also a computer) every day also. BTW, I'm usig handcent, (did NOT do a hard reset) and I have the ap that keeps the phone awake while in the upright position...Screebl.

I have mine plugged in every single night from about 11pm-7am. My awake time is never above 20%, and it doesnt seem to increase after being on the charger all night. Right now its sitting at 10% and has been off of the charger for about an hour.

I'm in the same boat as this guy...I've tried everything and am at 100% all the time.

I would inspect the apps that you have installed... my Hero sleeps fine when being plugged in. Was at 4% when charging last night and is still 4% after unplugging.

My phone sleeps if plugged into the AC outlet. If it's plugged into the computer by USB then it won't sleep.

Bottom line is that if you tried everything and you still can't get it to work properly then your phone is defective. Return it for another one. Maybe a whole batch is defective so try to get it from a different source?

well my phone is back to using the factory installed SMS application , and battery life is no worse then it was while using handcent ? Guess I will just have to wait for HTC/Sprint to come up with a fix , hopefully soon !!!!

don't know if it applies to anybody else but I removed the BBC news widget and noticed a massive improvement in battery life. Now getting 7AM-Midnight without going into the red. Thats with moderate to heavy use

My battery works ok. 10 hours on now with probably a typical amount of use and it's at 40% battery life.

I've disabled most "active" widgets. Any widget such as the home screen's weather and clock, where it pulls info from the internet, I've disabled. I don't have gmail nor programs like craigslists auto updating.

If you have problems with your phone then reset your phone and don't install any apps and have minimal widgets for a couple of days. Make sure to do the text message fix, etc.

If the battery life is still bad then return the phone. It's defective. Don't wait for a patch because it could very well be a hardware issue. Maybe something as simple as a bad batch of batteries or some other hardware.

Agree with the above suggestions. I know the phone is designed for widgets and they are fun to use but...... the more you have the faster the battery drains. I can go all day on one charge now. I don't use a Task Killer of any sort and always use the "back" button to exit a program. The phone is still snappy and I'm going on 4 days without a reboot.

when i get a new txt a window pops up with the txt in it and u can reply in the little window, is that handcent or is that the old messaging app still giving notifications? if so how do i stop this?
ive done all the steps and the sleep time is good

Well I found a cure far better than using Handcent or Chomp to save battery life , it is right in the Android market and its called Automatic Task Killer ! When installed you get to choose what it kills every single time the screen turns off !!! and you can make changes to this anytime you want !!! add or delete items for it to kill whenever you want to . Now with this said , I unplugged my charger this morning at 8:30 am when I got up. it is now 1:10 pm in the afternoon ( almost 5 hours later ) and my battery life is still at 93 % !!!!!! I have used the phone normally as I would on any other day , sending text messages using the FACTORY installed SMS application , even sent 3 picture mails , checked and sent email , and spent my normal amount of time using the web as I do daily . This is AMAZING . Also everytime you turn the screen back on it will show for just a few seconds exactly what was freed and saved by Automatic Task Killer . HIGHLY recommend this to all fellow Sprint HTC Hero users !!!! I am THRILLED !!!!

I put Auto Task Killer on my phone, and it isn't changing my 100% awake time. I did the handcent fix and it was under 100% for a few days, but then out of nowhere its back at 100% and no matter what I do, the number won't drop.

One thing I have noticed though after a week of having the phone is that my battery life is MUCH better. My phone has been able to last all day with a good amount of usage. Right now its at around 8.5 hours of awake and up time and the battery shows 50% left. Not as good as what some have got, but I am used to charging my phone every night over night and the phone is lasting till I need to go to bed every day.

I got mine Friday, put two overnight charges on it. Yesterday I made it damn near all day from about 8am to 5pm before it got into the red. Today from 7:30am to 10am damn near 50% drain. I did the handcent thing, followed by a hard reset. Re-installed handcent, about 2:30pm, and have it rocking all afternoon. I just loaded this auto task killer.

If I get 50% battery after 8 hours, I'd be satisfied.
