Help Spontaneous shutdown / reboots

Best buy swapped my phone out no problem and i was the only one who came back with the reboot issue so far. They have to expect defects on a new product its just the nature of technology

Best buy will do swaps within 30 days of purchase, or whatever their timeframe is. If you purchase their protection plan for $9.99 a month, after the 30 days they will attempt to have it fixed. If it cannot be fixed, they will replace it WITHOUT a deductible. VZW will charge you a deductible on the phone if it needs replaced after the 30 days return timeframe!! Just some helpful info for you all that purchased from Best Buy.

This is now becoming a common issue. I had it but got lucky that the Best Buy employee didn't let me leave with it doing it. He got me a new one and it worked flawlessly.

YOUR PHONE SHOULD NOT BE RESETTING BY ITSELF!! It is NOT!!!!!! an application issue. Do not be fooled by the "you need taskiller app". You do need that, but it is not a solution for the reset. It is a bad phone that you need to exchange.

Hopefully VZW/Bestbuy/Motorolla are noticing a rise in this issue and will treat you curtiously with a new replacement without making you jump through strings.

Please, those referencing Taskiller, yes that is an amazing app and it is a necessity for the Droid, but no this will NOT fix the issue. I know for sure as my phone could not even be ACTIVATED by Best Buy because it was resetting by itself before he could finish, then it would power itself back on/off over and over randomly while he was activating a new phone. It became a joke.

I am confused. Can someone confirm that they must pay a deductible after 30 days if the unit needs to be repaired? In my state that is illegal (and I would be willing to bet federal consumer laws would be in effect as well). This is my understanding. Someone correct me.....

You have 30 days to bring the phone back. During this time you pay a restocking fee if you do not want a replacement Droid.

You have a one year warranty against a defective product (Motorola warranty). Meaning if it is failing because a component is defective they must replace or repair the phone.

In many states you have an "Implied Warranty" meaning in my state it is usually two years on a cell phone (as long as it does not show damage). Many states have great consumer protection laws. I am confused as to why anyone is being required to pay a deductible for the repair of a defective cell phone.

Verizon can sell anything they want and I understand the premiss of selling phone insurance because they make so much money on the policy, but I have to believe the phone is covered for at least a year. The 30 day thing is just to return the phone and dump the service. Right?

I get my phone today. If my phone reboots or otherwise operates wrong. It is going back immediately. I will keep doing this until they get me one that works. After 30 days if something goes bad(as an example the speaker dies). It is going back and they must repair it for FREE (up to one year). After that if it fails I must request a free repair and if they do not repair it I will contact my local consumer protection unit and file a complaint. I would be willing to bet Verizon is going to treat everyone very well and it won't come to this.

Can someone confirm what they Motorola warranty says?

Yea its hit or miss when you get the first batch of phones, because I got one a Friday and it has been working great. I had been using navigation while on the web while messaging, I'm sure the first batch will have its defects, but if you notice that it has been restarting itself its better to take it back and have it looked at and it always good to get insurance with these types of phones better safe than sorry.

I agree on having the insurance. How much does it cost? What does it cover? I only paid $1 additional per month on my homeowners covers water damage, theft or anything else that happens (when I had my iPhone 3Gs). $50 Deductible for breakage. I will be adding my Droid today and removing the iphone.

Sorry I should clarify, the deductible thorugh Verizon Wireless is if it has to be REPLACED and not just repaired. Best buy will not charge a deductible if it has to be replaced, primarily because you're paying $9.99 a month with their insurance.

I think you guys are talking about the same but different things. Motorola gives you a warranty for 1 year that will cover manufacturer defects. When using the warranty, there is no deductible.

Best Buy and Verizon try to sell you insurance. This is for things that fall outside of the warranty, mostly user error. If you drop your phone in the pool, its not Motorola's fault and they are not gonna fix it, but if you have insurance you are covered. I believe Best Buy's is a couple dollars more a month than Verizon but they have no deductible and seemed more comprehensive.

Correct, This is all outside of the 1 year motorolla as well. Sorry, I keep leaving my posts incomplete information, terribly confusing I know.

Within the 1 year manufacturer warranty, you're not charged a deductible. Outside, Verizon Wireless will charge a deductible to replace the phone (if it can't be fixed). I went with bestbuy for 9.99 even though it seems expensive because the phone is very heavy and if you drop it, just think... Ouch.

Just wanted to chime in and say I've had about 4 or 5 reboots since I picked the phone up on Friday. Can't really pinpoint the exact conditions that cause the reboot to occur. I'm going to see how it performs in the next few days and I'll take it back and exchange for a new Droid if problems persist.

I bet if you bring it back now they will replace it. Rebooting is not "normal". I look at it this way. If it rebooted once, maybe I did something wrong. Twice in two days, sorry, bu,bye. Question..... is it getting hot when it reboots? Not meaning while running apps in your pocket, but just sitting in the open. If so, it is defective. Verizon is being quite awesome. It is not worth holding on and then having it melt down 3 months from now.

I have never noticed any issues with excessive warmth from the battery area. I'll take it back and swap it for a new one.

Anyone know how painful the process of bringing all of my apps, settings, contacts, etc. from one Droid to another will be? Is it as easy as swapping the SD from my current unit to the new one?

I bought the phone on the 6th and haven't had any problems with rebooting until today, after mucking around with a few different apps and having it on USB Charge, It has reset randomly about 5 times within the last 2 hours. I think it may be a software complication so I deleted several sketchy applications and use task killer religiously, so far its only happened while charging.

Returned mine to Verizon for the same problem. Tried removing all apps but didnt fix it. They gave me a new one. The difference is night and day. Not only was it rebooting but the new one runs smoother and the sound quality is much better. Bring it back....

I seem to get a lot (2 this AM within 10 min of each other) after using task killer. I uninstalled and no reboots.

If you're getting random reboots, take it back ASAP! I've had mine for two days and it has not done anything like that.

I don't own a Droid yet but just to give you a peace of mind I had my Samsung Trance replaced and it had scratches on it. If you can prove that it's an software issue that there's no way you dropping it caused then they'll replace it. And honesty with any phone if it has an "issue" and the Verizon store thinks they can "fix it" they can't. I had the stupid phone replaced 3 times and they always tried to "fix it". Just request a new one :)

Did you buy the phone at the store? If so I can see why they want you to bring it to the Verizon Store you bought it at. If not, be firm and tell him/her that you are not going to drive into a store because you bought it on-line. As for the scratch....polish it out a little bit. If you have a good car polish put a little....I mean a very little around the scratch and then polish it until it it is minimized. Also you can try the old clear nail polish trick and try to fill it in. By the way if you are unhappy with the service at Verizon and you are not getting any satisfaction ask to speak to a customer service manager. For the most part they are willing to do whatever they need to do to make you happy and keep you as a customer. The customer service phone tech I spoke to gave me her direct extension to call her with any problems. She said if she was not in she would return my call.

Well I've had mine for 6 days with absolutely no problems until today so don't count your chickens before they hatch....

Ya. after a solid 8 to 10 hours yesterday, shut the phone off overnight, started it up this AM and 3 reboots in a row... then another in about 10 min.
now fine for the last hour or so (and I'll go out on a limb and bet it will be fine for the rest of the day.)
I went first few days without problems as well. I'm thinking more and more it's app interference.

Do you mind saying what apps you believe were causing the problems? When you did not have any problems did you have the same apps as you do now? Just trying to narrow it down. I am getting a new Droid tomorrow and I plan on not installing anything on it for a week to see how it goes.

Somewhat hard to narrow down because it becomes an issue of being a phone/app conflict or app/app conflict. task killer was on that was causing problems. the most recent appears to be phoneflix or phoneflix in conjunction with handcent.
I have no evidence it's one thing or the other, I only know what I observe based upon what I have installed. Regardless, I still love the phone and am glad I made the purchase.

EDIT: check that, just locked up while using touchdown.....
