Sprint Airave (Post #1 has a quick "FAQ" for help)

your a natural... will be here waiting.. :)

Actually I do have another question for you! It says to turn the power off for the DSL modem and the wireless router before hooking it up. Can I just turn off both by using the power buttons on the back of each unit or do I have to actually unplug both units. I know, kind of dumb question but I want to do it correctly. :o

using the power buttons puts the units in a standby configuration... so they are "sleep" or hibernating.

for this though, i would go ahead and fully remove power to those units because you are adding another unit that needs internet access. just helps to "zero" everything and put all the components on the same page.

unplug for at least a minute before powering back up. :)

Makes sense! Will do, I am glad I asked! Thank you once again! :)

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!! Set-up was easy, did exactly what you told me to do, it only took 20 minutes for the Airvana to turn solid green and now I have 3G and more bars on my phone. Also, it does make those beeps when I make a phone call! PERFECT! Thank you so much!!!! :D

I've used an AiRave for years and had no problems.

One day my Linksys router died and I ended up replacing it with a NetGear. I didn't notice immediately if the AiRave worked or not right after, however within a week or I began wondering why my phone wasn't working very well at home. Without thinking about the new router, I messed with the AiRave a bit, rebooted it, etc and decided to just call it dead.

Sprint sent me another one I (new model), only to have the same problem. Now, I decided to look more into it. First, I am not getting a GPS signal for some reason (again it's worked for years). Second, the WAN light is blue, however my router doesn't show that it's actually assigned a DHCP address (and doing a tcpdump on my Mac shows the AiRave continually sending DHCP/BootP request packets).

At present I am blaming the NetGear as it doesn't appear to even be replying to the DHCP request.

that is super super news!!! :D look at you... :)

Thank you! I am thrilled. I do have one question. I noticed when I leave my house and then I come back home again and my phone reconnects to the Airvana, I cannot send texts until I shut down and turn on the phone again (it keeps telling me texts cannot be sent. Once I turn the phone off and back on again the texts work again. Do you know what the reason is for this? Is there anything I can do to fix this? Otherwise it works impeccibly! :)

I have the airave hooked to my wireless router via the LAN. Is that correct?

I turned off my DSL modem and wireless router, connected the ethernet cable from the Airvana to the LAN port in my wireless router, plugged in the GPS attenna into the airvana, turned on my DSL modem and wireless router, plugged the Airvana into a surge protector, the Airvana did its cycle with all the lights flashing and then they all turned solid green (minus the VOIP light) and my phone was ready to go.

give Sprint Airave tech support a call. issues like that become unique to the user. I dont have any issue with sms messages personally.

Wish i could be of more help there. perhaps its been touched upon in this thread? someone may come by and post if they have noticed this.

but in the mean time and between time, id just holler at Sprint airave support.

I've got one for you marctronixx, I have the new Airvana and the thing is great that I get full bars around my house now instead of my normal one bar.

My problem is that I have to have my setup go modem--> Airave--> crApple Airport Express, obviously its crAple and I have to do it this way because it only has a port for the WAN and no outgoing ports. This connection type has not messed with my download speeds but has dropped my upload speeds for 5mbps to 0.7mbps. It also has a built in firewall that blocks all incoming traffic by default. I just recently found out how to access into the Airave's settings from my computer but it got late and I haven't had enough time to try and mess with it. For one I need to get the ports open for incoming traffic because it slows down my torrent client, which I think I will be able to figure out playing around with it a little. But I'm wondering if opening all the ports for incoming traffic will bring back my upload speeds or not. Briefly looking through the settings on the Airave, I did not see an option to shutoff the VOIP completely but I'm hoping there is some sort of solution to be found.

So I would love it if you could give me any hope of a fix for this or will I have to end up ditching the crApple Airport Express and spend more money on buying a wireless router with some outgoing ports?

Thanks again! It is rather odd. A little annoying so I will call them to see what could possibly be causing that but that minor inconvenience is nothing compared to not having signal and not being able to enjoy the phone. Now its super fast, battery life so much better and I finally can see what this phone is capable of doing, I am like a kid in a candy store now! :D

hey!

yes you figured out the issue. the Airvana DEMANDS QoS so it hogs more bandwidth to it than anything else downstream. i doubt opening up additional ports will do anything positive in your scenario. :(

if you could buy yourself a cheap switch that goes betwixt the modem and apple thingy that will solve your problems...

I've got one for you marctronixx...

Marctronixx,

After looking around some more in the airave settings I found the upload speed problem and it is directly related to the QoS. I have the ability to turn it on or off and set the uplink bandwith limit. It was set to .768 by default I would guess that way it would work for most peoples connections. So now my question is, do I shut off the QoS or just increase the limit? And if I should have it on and increase the limit, what value should I use? I typically get 4-5 mbps upload speeds.

please keep us updated on your report as others who may stop by may have the same issue.. :)

and your candy store comment made me think of the carmax ad.. :D

That was a funny commercial! :D

Called the Airvana/Sprint tech people and the woman I spoke with sent an update to my phone and Airvana, I rebooted the phone and then waited for the Airvana to reset itself. Then I went out for awhile, came home, sent a text and it worked! So, it seems that took care of the issue. They said once in awhile they get this kind of issue. The woman said she is going to call me tonight to follow up with me and see if the update worked. If she does, that would be great customer service as well! I will let you know if she does. :)

great! figured this would be a case by case issue.

they will call back.. i had to swap my evo 3d out and it needed a reps intervention.. she called back the next day as stated and even sent an email to follow up. Sprints CS has been steadily on the positive of late..

Yes, I agree that their CS has been wonderful lately, I remember dreading calling them because I could not get anyone on the phone that I could remotely understand and they always seemed confused. I still did not hear from her yet but she said she works till 9:30pm. We will see!

thats unfortunate, however im pleased to hear all is well thus far.. :) follow up after a few days and let all know how its working for you. :)

I definitely will! So far, so good. Have a great signal in my house, I have the choice of using the 3G or even the Wifi (do you know which one uses less battery?), and either way the phone is blazing fast!

The one recommendation I will make is when you set up the Airvana, to definitely use the GPS attenna. They tell you to put it on only if you need it, but my philosophy on that is that if you need the Airvana in your house because of no signal to begin with, this could only help it even more and give you an even better signal! I live in the mountains in a heavily wooded area and it was a no-brainer for me to hook up the attenna without me even trying it without it first. :)
