Sprint Airave (Post #1 has a quick "FAQ" for help)

call again and get another tech in the airave support. someone earlier had an issue and had it resolved from airvana support.

I've talked with several and they said that it might be an issue they need to address with the manufacturer of the Airave. My wife and I have just left it off so that we can at least send out text messages. Our reception in much poorer now though. :( It is a free service so I'm not going to complain to Sprint too much.

as i have mentioned many times in this thread.

i have had both units and have had probably 4 different handsets over the years i have been using these and not once have i had an issue.

if others have posted they were able to solve the issue via a sprint tech then clearly there is something that can be done. i know some people have had issues however i feel this is a small minority.

Anyone else's Airave preventing them from sending messages out? Called Sprint and they said they don't know what the issue is. It has been more than two weeks now.

Yes, I posted this same issue in earlier posts. I called the customer service number for the Airvana team that is in the Airvana instruction manual (not the normal Sprint customer service number). The rep actually sent an update from their facility right to my phone and the Airvana itself. They gave me instructions to reboot my cell phone once I got the update and I did not have the text message issue after they did that. I would request that they send you the update via your phone and Airvana...do not let them tell you otherwise because this is the proper fix for your problem.

Great thread.

So after some headaches I finally got my Airave working Modem -> Router -> Airave.

In this configuration should the cable from the router go to the Airave WAN or LAN port? When I go to a LAN port the mobile light constantly flashes, but I am able to login to the admin pages. When I go into the WAN port my mobile light locks up but then I can't login to the admin pages.

What is the correct configuration? And is there any way to get the Airave working behind the router and still be able to access the admin pages?

connect the airvana to a LAN port on the router. there is a picture a page or so back showing a netgear router.

connect the cat5 cable from the routers LAN port to the WAN on the Airvana.

I have a brand new airave in my hands and am debating connection resources. Very simple needs; have hi-speed internet and need to boost voice and data service on my phone. I was simply going to buy a new modem as the current modem has only one port; however, after reading all the threads and talking to my internet service I'm debating - new modem or add a router?

Advice is appreciated, thank you!

are you on cable? comcastic? no?

are you in a DOCSIS 3.x service area?

if you are not yet in a DOCSIS 3.x service area you may or may not need a new router. this depends on the plant (isp) you are on.

the recommended hardware:

modem
router (a MUST!!!!)
airave.

so, just depends on your setup and broadband pipe.

I am experiencing an echo on voice calls made through phones connected to my Airvana. Happens on two different phones from two different mfg. connection: modem, router, airvana. Cable service Comcast. Any ideas to correct?

One bar or no bars in my apartment...Lotta dropped calls...Wish I had the Photon Back...Explained the situation to Sprint...Notta problem...Free Air Wave @$129 value and free service at $4 a month I'll take it...to have decent call service again...Should be able to use 3G for Internet again...But I'd rather do Wi Fi ...It smokes...Just thought I'd let people know (Who might have this Problem)...Sprints Customer Service has been great to me...Now at ten years ...Just bring me the Nexus Prime and LTE 4G...and I'll be one Happy Camper....:D

Why are people recommending putting the Airave behind the router (i.e., connecting the router to the cable modem)? I would assume the reason Sprint suggests connecting the Airave directly to the cable modem is so that the Airave can prioritize phone calls. I imagine most of us would want limited bandwidth to be allocated first to phone calls, then to data.

By putting the Airave behind the router, you don't get that prioritization unless you change the router settings.

Am I missing something?

I noticed that I can use the Sprint site to restrict who can get on my Airave. I thought Sprint was discontinuing that due to the issue that any Sprint customers near your Airave will get blocked from making calls at all?

Or did they change how the phones work and now they will go to a tower even if a blocked Airave signal is stronger?

wrench,

the latest airvana has VoIP built in. Sprint does not currently offer VoIP.

IF you put the Airvana IN FRONT of the router, the Airvana has the potential to hog up a lot of bandwidth for nothing. this bandwidth is not used for mobile phone calls!

this is the reason why the airvana is put BEHIND the router.

the QoS (prioritizing) feature is ONLY for VoIP and NOT mobile phone use.

the restriction feature on spritns site is not working. do not even waste your time with it. :)

So you're saying that cellphone voice could be crowded out by data downloads on your computer with equal likelihood whether the Airvana is in front of or behind the router?

I've had one of these guys AFTER the router, for over a year now, and I have NEVER had a call drop off, no mater what I was downloading on my computer, whether it be a file, a torrent, or anything else, so , I doubt you have to worry about that ever happening...

voice calls from a mobile phone uses so little bandwidth its barely a blip on your data usage with your ISP.

ive used both generations of this model. i had the samsung unit when it was initially launched a couple years ago and then i picked this latest one up over a year ago when it launched. never had any issues with drop calls, sms messages getting delayed, GPS issues,, nothing.. so i can assure you putting the femtocell behind the router is a safe setup and the most recommended. the QoS in the box does NOTHING for the mobile calls..

you are free, however, to locate the femtocell however you want it. if you want sprint to control your QoS then let the airvana be the first in line after the modem. choice is yours. :)

Had the original Samsung Airave for Palm Pre. No problems. Decided to upgrade to Airvana in May of this year and did not have any problems until about two weeks ago. Now I cannot text out, get a few texts in and in multiples. I called Sprint they thought it was my launch day Nexus S. Replaced phone with a refurb, still having problems. Now they are sending me a new Airvana in hopes that the problem lies there. From what I have read the Airvana is the problem and there is no fix in site. I have started sending text messages through Google mail and it is working out pretty well. The phone acts normally when I am away from homes, texts sent, received perfectly. I hope they find a fix for this soon.

it could be anything not just the femtocell. your ISP could be at fault as well as the GPS in the handset and/or just incorrect info on sprints end.

ive never had any issues with either femtocell. I do hope your problem is resolved.

One thing people haven't mentioned about the Airvana is that it's visually inspiring. I've always wanted a miniature air conditioner and now, with the Airvana antenna trailing the window, I can fulfill my dream of pretending the AC has given birth.

Here's the thing: The window in my living room offers stunningly putrid reception. The window that does yield a few stingy bars is in a distant spare bedroom. Unfortunately, my music setup and computer have to remain where they are (in the aforeheaded living room).

Is there an antenna available that would work with the Airvana and extends 60-80 feet? If not, is there an extension for the existing antenna that would, as you young people say, work?
