Root [Sprint] [Help Req] ICS to JB

signal34

Newbie
Hello all,

I have an issue trying to upgrade one of my phones from ICS to JB. I have two Sprint Victory phones, which don't have cell service and are just used as internet phones.

Phone #1 updates to JB just fine. I was able to Odin it to stock ICS then root, and placed the JB "update.zip" on the SD card and upgraded using Stock Recovery. Phone #2, however, has a problem upgrading using the same method.

When trying to upgrade Phone #2 in Stock Recovery, I keep getting some Error 7 message about the SNS.apk file in /system/apps. Looks like maybe the MD5 doesn't match the updater script? I have Odin'd the phone back to stock ICS multiple times but I get the same error -- weird, because Phone #1 had no issues, and I'm using the same method and files.

So, I took Phone #1 (JB) and made a backup using TWRP. I rooted and installed TWRP on the Phone #2 (still ICS) and restored the JB backup from the Phone #1. It boots up just fine with nothing force closing, except WiFi and Bluetooth won't work. I even upgraded the modem to J9 thinking that might be the problem, but still Wifi/BT won't work.

Any suggestions? Thanks for any and all comments.

Are you using Sprint or Virgin Mobile?

Have you tried taking the update.zip from the phone that upgraded successfully and placing it on the phone that downloaded the apparent "corrupt" update.zip? And then proceeding with installing the update from stock recovery?

Both are Sprint phones.

Yup, sure have. I used the same update.zip for both phones, and even re-downloaded it from two different sources. Every time I try to update Phone #2, Error 7.

Have you rooted and possibly removed or altered anything in the system directory in the problematic phone? Maybe the update.zip is looking for a file in system that has been removed or modified?

I dunno just tossing out guesses

I appreciate any guesses at this point. :)

Made sure root was removed and stock recovery was installed, then used Odin to flash back to stock. Dunno -- maybe something was changed in the .tar file, though it claims to be the official Stock ROM, and it works just fine on the other phone.

If I could just get the WiFi/BT to work everything would be fine, but I just have no clue what's causing that problem....

Ok, so I downloaded a new stock .tar and flashed with Odin. Now when I update from ICS using the update.zip file within stock recovery, it reboots to an android lying on his back with his stomach open and a red triangle hovering over him. If I reboot I get stuck at the Sprint logo.

Closer, but no cigar yet.

Sounds like a modem issue to me. Make sure to flash the stock modem that came with the phone. Not a Virgin Mobile one either because your phones are Sprint.

Finally found the right combination of stock .tar and update.zip files.

Just in case anyone is interested, the files can be found here:

It links you to Hotfiles, but these were the only combinations that worked. Now running good ole JB on all phones. :smokingsomb:

Great! So the rom you have linked here is for the VM version and not Sprint? Does your MMS work? :)

Edit: oh yeah forgot your phone was Sprint. Awesome! Glad you found this.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I've been trying to get rooted JB on this phone since mid Feb.

This is the first post I've been able to translate to getting the phone back to stock, updated to JB and rooted.

Thanks to all those doing the real hard work!
