[Sprint] How to Root Sprint Galaxy Nexus for Dummies [Windows, Mac, Linux]

I left it about a minute, am I being impatient?

I've now left it for a good 15-20 minutes and still nothing, I have downloaded something called the galaxy nexus tool kit v7.4 and I am attempting a repair, still no sign that there is any connection to the phone though!

Are you using the Mac side of your computer or Parallels? If Parallels is on turn it off. Also did you wipe system after or before you flashed the ROM?

EDIT: also have you tried restoring you nandroid and letting it sit for about 10 min. You may have gotten a bad download of the ROM.

The lock at the bottom of the screen means you're bootloader is still locked. I'm at work so I can't provide much help. What method did you use? I know you have a Mac, did you follow the steps in urge's guide? If so, what step did you have problems?

Reread your post, when you rooted, did the phone prompt you to unlock the boot loader? Also were the files still zipped when you ran the terminal commands? Was the rom file still zipped? There is an app http://www.android.com/filetransfer/ that can be used to help transfer files from Mac to Android phone. Do you have that installed? Have you tried to transfer files from your computer via recovery? You might be able to transfer a different rom to flash.

the lock means you are unlocked, if he was locked it wouldn't have anything if I'm not mistaken. He has a recovery so that must mean he is unlocked.

Once the phone is unlocked, the lock symbol should be unlocked. But you're right, if there is custom recovery then the phone is unlocked.

After reading further on this issue, it looks like using oden is the only fix (so far). If you are unable to transfer files to flash a new ROM and you are unable to restore a nand, then it doesn't seem there any other fixes. There are several other threads on this issue on xda. Mostly from a PC perspective though.

Has anyone smarter than me found another way?

Maybe the new root/unroot tool Urge posted will shed some light on those issues.

Forgot about that find. I didn't read too much into it because he indicated it was more complicated than the current method.

I'm interested to find out if they ever got their phone working and if so, how.

Me too. I hope Minki posts back here to give us an update.

Its the same process (for rooting at least) as what we have right now. It may be easier if you are using a PC and have driver issues because what it does is it boots using a CD or jump drive instead of the HHD on your computer. What it boots to is a custom build of linux that comes preinstalled with everything you need to root or unroot. The zips I have include everything for Mac and Linux but if you are on a PC you still need to get the drivers if I remember correctly, unfortunately I am unable to test my PC version since I don't own one.

In a nutshell the new process is the same as the one I have but with extra steps that may help if you are having issues with getting adb/fastboot set up and recognizing your phone.

I'll give a double wipe a shot. This time it booted and seemed to work fine.... but when I powered off with the phone plugged in - the charging symbol appeared, and stayed on... I couldn't interact with the phone at all. Unplugged it, same. Had to do a battery pull :(

I'll try the double wipe next.

So it's wipe cache, davlik, factory reset data, wipe data, and wipe system? I believe that is everything except internal storage. (TWRP by the way)

Hmm... one of the data options (wipe data maybe?) says that it'll wipe backups and remove encryption? That sounds like it'll kill the sd card - is that not the case?

What should we *not* wipe?

I should've asked this first. What is it you're trying to accomplish?

Just to clarify, you powered down and plugged the phone into the charger. Once it was plugged in, the charging battery icon appeared. From there the phone was non responsive, correct?

Lets start with the simplest troubleshoot, When you see the battery icon the phone while charging the phone is still off. With this phone (or at least mine) in order to turn it back on, I have to hold the power button for a few seconds.

If not, what ROM are you flashing, kernel, etc?

I had some trouble with one of the skank nightlies the other day (7/24). Which was a bad download

Its while trying to flash acs jb.... I'm leaning towards a bad dl right now.

I tried to power on for about 20 seconds.

Yeah, I'll have to download a few tomorrow...

Just for the sake of it, here was my md5 of the rom -
Code:
c8347be221bdec2e8342b01635093b7e Are-You-Jellin-MS1-R2.zip
EDIT - hmm... now I'm wondering if perhaps the file didn't copy over completely from my computer to my phone ... I'll check that hash against the copy of the rom on my phone. I hate having to keep taking the back cover off.
Edit2 - nope, md5's match. :( Gonna have to keep kicking it in ICS for a little while. Gotta get the roms!! On a side note, I'm going to get more than just one this time :D
