Root [Sprint] OTA Update L300VPBND4

, I wish you were on the Sprint side of things. You are the most helpful person here, the Sprint side needs someone like you to be on top of things like this!
+1 Madbat a wealth of information!

I am simply stock root with most of the bloatware apps frozen using ti back up. Do I need to unfreeze the apps or just run the zip?

I think you can just apply it. I didn't unfreeze anything.

You must currently be on MC1 and have the stock apps installed for this update to work. I've remove the ro.secure check so rooted users can install this and I've removed the updater for the recovery partition so you don't lose your TWRP/ClockworkMod/etc install. If anyone needs a version with the stock apps check removed as well, let me know. If there's enough interest, I'll make one and post that as well.

Hi can you please post a version without the stock app check. It would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Since this rom seems to be described as an update to the modem, has anyone tried pulling the modem from the rom and just flashing that? Can anyone who flashed the whole rom already seem much difference aside from what might be a temp fix to the vol issue. What about keeping Sprintorious and just updating the modem -- would that work?

Overclock kernels like vaevictus and insanelycool are update specific (MC1 vs ND4, etc), so I think it's not as simple as flashing over part of your old rom. I'm under the impression they don't just leave all the other code identical.

You're right, kernels are device and rom specific. However, modems while device specific, are not rom specific. On other models, we switched out modems all the time to maximize throughput and coverage for our specific area. Just remember that an updated modem, while accomplishing something for the carrier, is not necessarily in your best interest, as sometimes they slow speeds or reduce coverage. That's why for most models we have modem archives to be able to switch them out.

Here's an example on XDA for a modem backup/switcher tool for the S3...

So actually, it is quite easy to backup your old modem from MC1 and update to ND4 while leaving other parts of the rom intact, so you should be able to keep Sprintorious while still having the benefits of the new modem, if that speeds things up in your area. If not just reflash the MC1 modem...

Modems can be bootloader specific though, as some ppl found on the sprint S3 (with a hard brick)

I remember that issue, but I beleive it was caused by ppl updating the modem with a similar model from a different carrier, or had a bootloader containing Knox and then tried to downgrade their bootloader, thinking they were downgrading their modem.

Even the post that discusses the issue, says that within the same model and carrier, modems are interchangeable...

So, does the rom update ND4 contain Knox? If so, that would be a reason to not update...

By the way, does anyone know JerryScript or g60madman(creator of vmobi), or have access to the files that used to be in his jerryscript.vmobi.us developer achive now that it is offline? He had all the stock, deodexed, and custom roms as well as the kernels and modems in one location...

I think most of it was moved onto here Official Unloved Device HitSquad of which if you're looking for the modem, the older ones are under Stock>JB and theres also a modem backup tool under Other called efsbu7z however I highly recommend to Not use it, I'm guessing it was meant for one of the older modems because I tried it and the thing nearly bricked my phone...

Actually, Jerry had a stock deodexed rooted MC1 rom (goghspr_stock_deodexed_rooted.zip) that he used to develop Sprintorious and was required for the update and any mods. Anyone have that file?

Sorry to hear the modem tool, efsbu7z, doesn't play nice anymore. I was going to try that one as well. Of course you can use the recovery tool to backup and restore your current modem, and use Odin to flash any others you'd like to try...

I get that, I guess what I was trying to say is that ND4 might have differences beyond the modem that aren't advertised.

Yeah, Samsung's change log isn't being very helpful here. Anyone notice any other changes?

For Sprint's version of Victory, if I'm not mistaken, the only relatively bug free custom rom seems to be the Sprintorious for the MC1 rom, so I was trying to see if we could keep that and still take advantage of the new modem. Any other thoughts on customization for ND4?

The VM Victory has the fantastic Conquest rom, but the author, moonknightus, seems to intensely dislike Sprint and unfortunately won't tweak his roms for this phone and no one else has taken up the effort to port it here...

actually no, that doesn't work.. I tried that and TWRP was unable to mount /modem and similarly with odin, tried flashing another modem and it just failed, but I said nearly bricked it because I fixed it by flashing stock ICS and updated, then used TWRP to restore my backup with everything on it, so all is good.

Stock mc1 is required, stock deodex would be less than useless for system update. You would need stock, odex. You can just use your own stock backup from mc1.

Sorry, I meant update the MC1 rom to Sprintorious, not ND4, which I was going to try to just update the modem...

Oh. I see. I would just go stock and update. You can add the tweaks from sprintorious (there's only a couple). I think I have a zip somewhere of just the scripts and tweaks. I'll check. Its basically deodexed (useless unless you plan to make a theme) SD swap (external2internalsd from play store) and link2sd from play store. And de- bloated. The script for swap and link is in system/etc/init.d. just copy it. There wasn't much in sprintorious.

Well if you could find the zip, I'd sure appreciate it -- sent you a PM...

I think some changes in features.xml and maybe some build prop edits. But that's it. That's all sprintorious/victorious was really. Just stock, debloated and slightly optimized. With a new camera. I think this was for the virgin mobile one though, but i dont think it matters for this. You can do more with xposed framework nowadays.

I think people think custom ROMS have to be the end-all-be-all nowadays to consider a device "supported". While a multitude of ROMs is awesome, no doubt, like you said: Xposed can do a buttload these days.

You root this device, install TWRP, freeze/delete some system APKs with Titanium Backup, install a custom kernel (believe it or not that earlier version of Vivactus actually ended up working on my phone so I'm at 384Mhz-1.5Ghz), put some xposed modules on it (volume key music skipping, xprivacy, etc.), and you've got a "custom ROM" of your own. Room-to-Roam handled that link2SD as well, etc.

I modded the GUI of MC1 to be more AOSP based on a lot of moonknightus' stuff as well.

So while you may be running a TouchWiz Samsung Phone and not a "pure AOSP custom ROM", you won't notice much of the difference if you set it up right. Many times I forget I'm basically "a few restored APKs and a stock kernel/recovery" away from a pure stock Sprint Victory

Any chance someone out there has the Stock OTA update for LJ9 to MC1 (4.1.1 to 4.1.2)? Most links for this device are dead, would love to try this new OTA update out but I'm on 4.1.1 on my old phone that is no longer active or able to receive updates the normal way.
