Root Started Root process, had a hiccup

Well i have made some head way, but yet another questions has come up. I have successfully downgraded to 2.1 so i started the simpleroot program and let it do its thing. the bootloader cam up, it told me to click update, did so and it said that the main version is older and the update failed, click up to reboot, so i did so.

Can i proceed into step to from the red screen? Or will cause problems?

did you have simpleroot check for updates before you started? Also, verify that you are on the 1.47.x build. Settings > About Phone > Software info

I'm gonna look like a moron now, i went ahead with step 2, and 3. now i have a picture of the phone with a red triangle and an exclamation mark.

I did not check for updates, i missed that part while i was trying to follow the guide over on xda. Before my excited red triangle popped up i had checked the phone info and it said 1.47.. etc. I think i may have used the 3 click version for the original software without the OTA updates and messed something up.

I'm going to sit here and wait for a reply before i do anything so as not to make the situation any worse.

Use the Simpleroot in my sig, and have it check for updates before you start. The one in my sig is made for 1.47. I've read that once you get that red triangle, it's not possible to simpleroot until you return your phone to stock with an RUU. And the RUU puts you at 2.1 build 1.32, which means you would want the old 3-click simpleroot to fully root.

What do i do about the triangle now? I haven't touched the phone at all after it came up.
 
OK, so i pulled the battery and restarted, it started up ok, i double checked the software info and it said 1.47... so i used the simpleroot for 1.47 and it went smooth. I'm now able to boot up into 21., the sprint startup animation is gone (bonus) how do i know i have successfully rooted and where to go from here? I downloaded a couple of ROMs that i am interested in, just move them to the phone and flash using recovery?

Three things to check:

1) bootloader. Power off your phone. Then, hold Power and Vol-down together until the white bootloader screen appears. On the first line, do you see "S-OFF" at the end? If so, NAND is unlocked! Next.

2) custom recovery. From the bootloader menu, use the vol-down button to scroll to RECOVERY. Press Power to select. In a few seconds, the recovery image should appear. Not sure which recovery will be there. Simpleroot gives you the option to flash either clockworkmod or RA. Did you do that step? If not, you should open Simpleroot and flash a recovery. Do clockworkmod for now.

3) superuser. Boot into your OS. When it's done, go to your app drawer and look for the "superuser" icon. If it's there, you can run root-only apps.

Next step (after you've verified you've flashed a custom recovery) is to download ROM Manager from the market. While I personally don't use this much, a lot of people like it for the convenience. ROM manager allows you to initiate nandroid backups, ROM flashing, etc from within the OS. The alternative is to boot into recovery (see the instructions I have for #1 and #2 above) and do things from there.

Glad you got things working. Red triangles are not our friends.

1) It does say S-OFF

2) I did do that step and had already chose RA, the guy on the video seemed to like it and i had read a thread about a guy trying to change over to that one so i just went with it.

3) I do not have a super user icon. However there are icons that i do not recognize. (i think this may be because of the RA vs. clockworkmanager recovery, any way to change it? can i just run it again and pick clockwork?)

While i was in the recovery i installed (flashed?) the unrevoked-forever.zip




I just flashed the clockwork mod same as i did the RA, no problems, i had already downloaded a couple ROMs and am installing one now (FRESH 3.2) I'll see if it works i guess :)

You're in good shape. RA is a great recovery. Stick with it. Over time, you may find you need clockwork too. ROM Manager allows you to switch between them with ease.

Ok, if you don't have the superuser icon, then you need to flash a rooted stock ROM. For now, if you can find it, I would flash the stock rooted 2.1 1.47.x ROM. Then, do a nandroid backup. Then use an app like MyBackup or Titanium to back up your apps and data.

Once you've done all that, you can decide whether you want to upgrade yourself to 2.2 (froyo). You should factory reset your phone before and after you flash froyo. This is why I had you back up everything. Personally, I wouldn't even rely on the backups. I would install everything manually again. That ensures you have a super-clean 2.2 ROM.
 
So on boot up after flashing Fresh 3.2 it got stuck in a loop of the fresh boot image (a little wierd hearing "fressshhh" every couple seconds) so i pulled the batt and restarted in recovery and wiped the data and cache' and re flashed fresh. Started up this time and seems to be stable, there is also a "superuser" icon in there now. Little pirate droid.

2.1 superuser was a ninja. 2.2 is a pirate :) actually, I don't know if the icon is tied to the android version or not.

So basically i should have a nandroid for every time you get your phone working again after flashing whatever to it? Something to fall back on if it doesnt work out? I used ROM Manager and hit the "backup current ROM" Is that the same thing as creating a nandroid or do i need that the option that i saw in the recovery?
