Root Started to Root then didn't finish

djrickz

Newbie
At some point I was going to root my HTC Evo 4g then chickened out as I was afraid of messing it up. Since I am stuck with the phone until early next year I figured I would take a look at the steps again and make a go of it. The steps listed have different versions of Hboot. Mine is not listed I have HBoot 6.16.1002 wish S-Off.

I am not sure if I started the process and if I did where do I go from here now.

Thanks for any help. I am new to rooting like many others but with the phone as old as it is now and having reached EOL I figured now is the time to take a crack at getting it to run better with ICS.

well from the looks of it your are rooted. your hboot has changed and you have s-off.

do you have a recovery?

Kinda off topic, but when I see someone with the same hboot as mine, I smile.
How many people have that hboot.? I rooted via revolutionary back in January.
And @djrickz--at what point did you stop the rooting process?

well hboot 6.16 is what revolutionary will do to the hboot. it changes it. why, i'm not sure as because the unrevoked team and alpha rev never realesed the exploit used.

It just makes it very easy to see that its not the stock H-boot.

To the OP: You are right where you want to be. It is very easy for you to put on a custom recovery and either flash a custom ROM or root the stock one anytime.

Its a good thing you got S-OFF while it was possible

No, I never went any further than that and I didn't even realize I rooted my phone. When I saw my hboot number didn't match up to any of the steps I just kept putting off doing anything further as I was afraid I might just mess it up.

Now I figure what the hell since it doesn't look like it will get any more updates.

Wow, I figured I did something wrong when the number didnt match anything I saw. I think I started around January as well and then just put it aside.

Nah, yer good. It was waaaay easier back then compared to now if you accepted the OTA's since then.
I feel as if we are compadres!

Thanks for the reply's so from here what steps do I take to put ICS on it? Maybe it will finally un better as it seems like for some reason I am always out of space and I have all my apps on the SD.

Well now thats another thing.
Are you familiar with Dark Tremors a2sd but not the Apps2sd process?
With Dark Tremors a2sd, with a partitioned sd card, apps can be fooled into being on the internal memory when in reality they are on the sd-ext.
Lots of internal memory gained when it is implemented.:)

Thanks for the information. No I never heard of that. I will look into it. Definitely need to free up space but I guess I should finish the ROM process first?

LOL, yes. I am still not sure where to go from here. If I go to the forums do I just follow from backing up and picking a new rom?

I see you are offline at the moment, but I think as Rx said, you need to flash a custom recovery.
:)

Thanks a lot, I will look for the steps for that in the forums. I am still not sure what steps to take. How ironic that I received a message tonight that there is an update for my HTC EVO 4g. Should I install it?

NO! Dont accept anymore OTA's...That might mess you up bro.:(
I have to read back a little in this thread to see where you are at.
Since you are s-off, check this link for a nice recovery I use..
[RECOVERY][MOD][1-June-2012] RA-supersonic-v4.3-smelkusMOD - xda-developers

Never accept ota's. Carriers usually push them out to close root exploits, and then throw a few sprinkles on top to make people want to accept it.

To get those sprinkles all you have to do is flash a Rom based on the new update. They usually start showing up the same day as the OTA comes out.

All you need to do is install a recovery, make a nandroid, and flash a Rom. Instructions can be found in the rooting guides in the life after root section.

Since from what everyone said it looks like I am where I need to be. I will go back to the forums and pick up where I left off.

Thanks for all the help. Will work on it tomorrow and see where I get. Some of the language and references I don't understand yet but I will get there.

As ocn stated, feel totally free to ask questions. When I started the root process back in January, alot of the language, terms etc were over my head also. I read, asked, and learned alot.
No question is dumb. If you have a new issue, start a new thread...easy.:)
Lots of helpful people here!

Thanks for all the input. I am working on this again today and looking at the steps. Should I begin at this point then? or skip this and go to ON TO Rooting your Evo...

download the htc drivers:HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe and install it onto your computer.
*do a factory reset on your phone go into phone settings/ sd storage/factory data reset. you will also loose all of your contacts and other data like text messages. so make sure that you backup accordingly. App List Backup or SMS Backup & Restore are good apps to use. also make sure your phone's contacts are linked to google which backs up your contacts to the cloud. when you sync with google again your contacts will be back. Another good app to use is MyBackup Pro It pretty much backs up everything for you. check it out.(optional)
*reformat your sd card by backing up the content of your card to the computer and in your phone go to settings/sd storage/unmount sd card/erase sd card.(optional)
make sure your phone has usb debugging on. go to phone settings/applications/development/check usb debugging
download this and put this file, Superuser-3.0.7-efgh-signed on the root(not in any folder) of your card via usb cable.
make sure that htc sync is uninstalled and also any anit-virus prgrams you have running on your computer is turned off.
also if you have pda net or doubletwist installed on your computer uninstall them.
and last but not least make sure that fastboot is unchecked. phone settings/applications/ uncheck fastboot.

So I am using My Backup Pro top back up apps & data. I was going to start from this step since I think this is where I left off. I hav S-Off. I just put superuser on the SD....Is it correct?

next we need to flash the superuser file (superuser su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip)
10.select recovery in bootloader.
11.select install .zip from sdcard.
12.find the superuser file and flash it.

time to make a nandroid backup.
13.still in recovery go back to the main menu
14.select backup and restore.
15.select backup.
16.after it is done you can reboot.

now a lot of people are reporting that revolutionary stops in the middle giving you s-off but with no recovery (you get a red triangle with an exclamation mark). reboot the phone (or pull the battery) and rerun revolutionary. it will ask you if you want to download clockwork mod. select yes and it should work the second time.

CONGRATS YOU ARE NOW ROOTED!!!!!!
