Help Status bar 3g symbol

I have had my HTC desire Z for a few days now and I am happy with it.
The problem I have is that it never shows 3G in the status bar. I have seen the G symbol and E symbol but never the 3G one.

I could get 3G on my old Nokia N900 in my current position.

I am wandering if I need to turn on 3G somewhere in the settings but cannot find it anywhere?

Any help would be appreciated.
 
Check that Settings/Wireless & networks/Mobile networks/Network mode is either GSM/WCDMA auto or WCDMA only, and that Mobile network is enabled.
 
I have selected mobile networks and can connect to the internet, but the status bar never shows a 3G symbol, only a GPRS OR EDGE SYMBOL?
 
Sorry for necro posting but it seems that there are 3 different kinds "E" seems to be the equivilant of 2g "G" seems to be 3g and if ur lucky "H" is 4g hope this helps some1
 
This may be a weird Q but...how can I make DZ to work on 2G only? Maybe it would help in bad connection we have at home.
