Root step by step guide? installing 2.3 on rooted 2.2

I used unrevoked to root my 2.2 and now I want 2.3. I've read the quick guide but I'm still not confident enough to take this on. Is there any step by step guides to doing this? What is nandroid? Is that something I have to download? If I won't lose my data then why backup? I read that updating the radios isn't required, what will I gain/lose by updating the radios. I remember back in the day I tried to update my radios on my HTC mogul and lost internet forever lol. Any help is appreciated ;)

have your read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html guide? there is a section on "after rooting" that covers the basics. i'm on my phone, but i will be home in a bit. so in the mean time read the guide and if you have any questions, i should be home by then.

Ok read that, good information, and I think I understand nandroid now, but does nand backup also backup the radios? And what is the pros/cons to updating them?

ok i'm back.
nandroids unfortunately do not back up radios. the only way to go back is to flash the downgrades. it is not necessary to upgrade them. i would recommend that to flash the combo package. you can get them here:[ Radios ][ 6-3 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers. also keep in mind that there is a very small possibility that you could loose your wimax(4g) keys. so just make sure to make a nandroid backup with your wimax keys backed up.

on that note you can get the ota rooted update here:supersonic_4.24.651.1_odexed-signed2.zip .

also i would recommend that you download the vr superwip here: ZZZVR_SUPERWIPE.zip. more on this later.
1. just download both files and transfer the files over to your sd card.
2. goto to recovery and make a nandroid backup
3. wipe dalvik cache, cache and system
4.next select intsall .zip from sd card
5. find vr superwipe(it just does a real good job at wiping to ensure that your rom has a clean environment to flash into)
6.next select install .zip from sd card again and select the ota rom file.
7. after it is done reboot. now the first reboot might take a bit longer as it has to build up dalvik cache. so be patient.

hope that helps

I'm confused, the quick guide I read said I only needed to wipe the Dalvik cache

"Most of what you'll be doing will be done through recovery. So play around with the menus in the recovery image to see what options are there. Start off by doing a NANDroid backup. Since this is a quick guide, I will assume you know how, or can find out how. Next, wipe dalvik-cache. You don't need to wipe data or cache. Now you are ready to flash the ROM. The ROM contains the stock OS (w/ superuser) and stock kernel. All of this is done from the recovery image."

And also, the wimax is not included in the radios? I still don't understand why I would update them or not, what's the difference?

Okay, here's what you should do.

(read the Dummies guide a dozen times, I must have read it 20 before I rooted my evo, and I should read it 20 more times because it has such good info in it)

Find the Caulkin's Format All zip. It will wipe everything that you need to wipe. If you are going to flash a *new* rom you should wipe, as ocn said, davlik cache, cache, and system.
Then you flash the new rom file (whatever.zip) and then you re boot.

If you are flashing a kernel, then it's different. But that's all in the dummies guide.

The wimax keys are something else. I always looked at it like a software MAC address... But I really don't know. The only think I know is that I try to back them up every so often (just to have them). Without them, your chance of using wimax is nada.

wipe wipe wipe is key. the more you wipe the better off you are. the one 9to5 mentioned to use wipes everything for you. but the vr superwip i linked does calkulin's format all 3 times. the cleaner your environment, the less issues you willhave while flashing. somepeople wipe x3 and uses vr superwipe x3 just to be sure. and i wouldnot follow that quick guide. the guide that matlock put together is the best found on the net. it has help root thousands of people. follow that guide instead and ask questions here. we great people like 9to5 to help out.

edit: if you flash the radio combo package, wimax is included. you do not have to flash it. for some people they experienced better signal and better battery life. i flashed the combo and i have not seen much difference. i believe you may get more towers and such with the update.

+1 Reading the Dummy's guide 20 times LOL. I read it and studied it, and the terms for a month before I rooted. It's better to be over informed than under informed before doing anything. Imo

ok good to know netflix is vital lol

final question (ihope)
if I wipe wipe wipe, will I lose my data, installed programs. contacts, etc?
If so how should I go about backup and restoring this data ?

yes you will loose your data. so you need to back them up if you do not want to loose them. use titnium backup to save your apps and its data. make sure all of your contacts are linked to google. and everything else you have to set up again. and you can then restore all your apps through titanium backup. just make sure to not restore system data.

well that is up to you. the actual update is kind of vanilla. but the new sense roms with sense 2.1 and sense 3.0 roms are AMAZING!!!!!!!. i would try those out first then the update. plus it will update your software to the most current one which is 4.24.

From the rooting for dummies guide...

"What? Thats it? Yes, that is it. Thanks to the great work from ClockworkMod (3.0) and Amon_RA (1.8), the WiMax.img can now be successfully backed up with your current ROM Backup. If there was ever the possibility that you lost the ability to use 4G on your device, simply FLASH a backup that has the WiMax.img file in it. Which is usually your most current backup."

My version is clockwork mod 2.6.0.1, I did a nand backup and it said it backed up my wimax keys, so I'm good then right? If anything goes wrong I can just restore this backup and I'm good to go? Reason I ask is this says 3.0.

clockwork mod 2.6 and up will back up your wimax keys so you are good to go if you loose them i would have a copy of it backed up on your computer just in case something happens to your card. i also have another copy in my dropbox account as well cuz you never know.

I don't know the clockwork recovery well, and only used it once (right after rooting, before I switched to amon ra), but if it said you backed up the wimax keys, you should be good.

There is a tread somewhere around here, created by akazabam that goes through the steps of 'opening' up a backup nandroid. It'll allow you to see what is inside each .img that is made.

As long as you have the wimax.img you should be good, I think.
I'm not sure, but I think those numbers might be off, I don't think my amon ra is 1.8... maybe it is.

I know that there is some debate on recoveries now because of the edify or whatever that is being changed (or already changed...) I think this is applicable to clockwork mod recovery though.

EDIT: hey ocn, what's the file size of the zzzvr_superwipe.zip ? just wanna make sure the download worked.
