Still a good choice?

I have been looking at both the S and Nexus for a while. Bought the Nexus but it is way too big for me. Is the S still a good choice? 4 inches seems to be my sweet spot for size. Thanks.

What phones are you talking about? By S do you mean Galaxy S, Nexus S...

By Nexus do you mean Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus...

The Nexus S is a great choice if you are on a budget. It is over a year old and is much slower than the Galaxy Nexus. 1GHz single core vs 1.2GHz dual care and 512MB RAM vs 1GB RAM.

I run a lot of apps and do a lot of multitasking on my phone and it had started lagging a little when I upgraded to the GSII.

If you want a phone that is going to be able to handle all the latest software you should never be looking at a phone that came out over a year ago if you want to keep it for a while. Things are just advancing too rapidly in the mobile world right now.

The Galaxy Nexus isn't a whole lot larger than the Nexus S. I was in the same boat as you, thinking the GNex was far too huge, but I compared it to the size of my NS, and you barely notice the difference.

Of course that small difference in size can make a pretty big impact if you already thought the Nexus S was pushing the boundaries of "too large." In that case, the NS is still a pretty decent phone, but only because it'll be among the first phones upgraded to Android 4.0, and the pure Google experience goes a long way as well.

For something a bit faster, but still in that 4-inch range, the LG Optimus 2X (aka T-Mobile G2x) is one of my top picks. Another good choice would be the Meizu MX (assuming it actually gets released and isn't sued by Apple). It has pretty impressive specs and is expected to have a reasonable pricetag.

Are you tied to any particular carrier? That could help us recommend a phone for you.

I have AT&T. I just think a 4 inch screen is perfect for me. The problem is finding one with updated specs. It seems everything now is 4.3 and above and I really dont need that. I have an iPad 2 and Kindle Fire for movies and such.

I think the best phone on AT&T with a 4" screen is the Atrix 4G. At least it is dual core and has 1 GB of RAM.

If you are going to root it and put a AOSP ROM on it then it would be good for a 4" phone, if not I would lean toward the Nexus S for the pure google phone.

I had the Nexus S then gave it to my wife when I bought the S2X. The S2X is a great phone but, its size is just a tad big for my liking. I swaped with my wife and now run ICS on the Nexus S, that in itself makes it feel like a new phone. Memory and speed is not an issue.

On AT&T, you have a couple 4-inch options: the Atrix 4G and the Captivate Glide. Both of those feature the Tegra 2 processor, but it's the slower version of the Tegra 2 (still a good processor though). The Atrix is actually slightly smaller than the Nexus S, and the Glide is essentially the exact same size.

That said, I think you should consider the Galaxy S II. AT&T's Galaxy S II is the only US version that kept the originaly 4.3-inch spec, and it's actually very close to the overall size of the Nexus S, only about 1mm taller and 3mm wider.

The Atrix 2 is about the same size as the Galaxy S II but has more modern specs compared to the first Atrix, so it's one to consider, too.

There is also the HTC Vivid, which is only 4mm taller and 3mm wider than the Nexus S, but will get you a nice dual-core chipset with LTE connectivity.
