Root Still debating root...

I am not really sold on the ROM choices. All of them can be mimiced with a theme launcher. Obviously I could do with the ability to remove apps but that's not really enough to do it. Any takers...

Really? This particular device has amazing developer support, & there are roms in just about any flavor imaginable, even several AOSP ICS builds.
If you really have to debate the benefits of rooting, then you really don't understand the power that root access grants you... Complete & total control of every aspect of the operation of your phone, including cpu voltage, clock speeds, battery life, etc, etc, etc. Yeah you can mimic the look of any rom to a point without root access, sure, but it's still stock bulky Touchwiz(not a fan), with all of the Sprint & Samsung bloatware (definitely not a fan) which ultimately bogs the phone down, & decreases battery life.

There is so much more to a ROM than just the look of it. Plus there are a lot more reasons to root than just to use a custom ROM. I rooted my phones for a long time before I ever tried a custom ROM so that I could take advantage of root only apps.

I stock rooted this device so I could use an adblocker app. After being rooted for most of my previous 2 years with the old phone I didn't realize how many ads normal android users have to deal with. As of now the phone is fast enough so I haven't bothered with custom kernels, I actually kind of like touchwiz, and the sprint apps don't bug me.

Just Root it already...Piece of Cake....

If you want a custom ROM I HIGHLY recommend CM9! I love CyanogenMod ROMs and put them on all my phones. Very few bugs even though it is an "alpha" and NO TOUCHWIZ!!

I did go CM9. I used 7 on my evo 4g and it really is pretty good. You're right, Alpha is pretty smooth.

I am also debating root... I understand what it does and the benefits but I'll be honest I am paranoid. The way I understand the method (provided xda developers) to root the E4GT ver: EL29 is you're taking a "stock" image that is already rooted and using ODIN to flash that to your phone. Has anyone dissected it to make sure that no additional apps were added or that the device isn't sending information somewhere? While I generally try to trust people, I am cautious at the same time due to the amount of personal information that is stored on these devices. I my intent is not to offend, so I hope it isn't taken this way as I appreciate the work that is put into projects like this - but I had to ask the question. So... thoughts on this?

Stock Roms and Rooted Roms basically have the same stuff thru Sammy and Sprint (Devs just customize their Roms to the Max...)...You can eliminate that by flashing bare roms which remove Sprint and Sammy stuff ...Which are Bloat...Sum Devs include these with their work...Calk does I know for sure...As far as personal info you can decline to share when popups come up asking this...Most stuff is encrypted...Its the same on PC'S and Phones...If your that paranoid I would get rid of your phone and PC...

Ive been doin this for years and Im not worried or Paranoid in the least...

I've been in the IT field for about 10 years and hold Comptia's Security+ certification so I am familiar with the basics of how phones and computers work and the security surrounding them. My concern is in regards to the stock roms that the devs provide... I would be surprised if they got them directly from the carrier...with that being said, where do these stock roms come from? What would be stopping someone from embedding a malicious apk in the rom? Is there a way to make sure there aren't any additional software embedded such as keyloggers, screen scrapers, etc?

That's why it's Open Source. It's completely open to peer review. :D

Good point...and considering the recent CarrierIQ debacle, I'm sure if nothing else these stock/custom roms can potentially be more secure (since CiQ and other apps and can just be removed + you can install droidwall). Regardless I would feel more comfortable if I could do an entire back up of "my" phone as it currently is. Can ODIN do this? I'll go ahead throw this in the search engine but if anyone can point me to a good thread that explains how this works, if it does in fact work, that would be awesome.

Now it is a spam blasting machine, removed every questionable app. Still it goes on and on. Considering going back to the stock rom

Iowa...you mentioned open source. how would i go about looking at the source code of a Rom? ...not sure where to start. Can i load a Rom for example in some sort of VM?
