Really? This particular device has amazing developer support, & there are roms in just about any flavor imaginable, even several AOSP ICS builds.I am not really sold on the ROM choices. All of them can be mimiced with a theme launcher. Obviously I could do with the ability to remove apps but that's not really enough to do it. Any takers...

If you want a custom ROM I HIGHLY recommend CM9! I love CyanogenMod ROMs and put them on all my phones. Very few bugs even though it is an "alpha" and NO TOUCHWIZ!!![]()
I am also debating root... I understand what it does and the benefits but I'll be honest I am paranoid. The way I understand the method (provided xda developers) to root the E4GT ver: EL29 is you're taking a "stock" image that is already rooted and using ODIN to flash that to your phone. Has anyone dissected it to make sure that no additional apps were added or that the device isn't sending information somewhere? While I generally try to trust people, I am cautious at the same time due to the amount of personal information that is stored on these devices. I my intent is not to offend, so I hope it isn't taken this way as I appreciate the work that is put into projects like this - but I had to ask the question. So... thoughts on this?

Stock Roms and Rooted Roms basically have the same stuff thru Sammy and Sprint (Devs just customize their Roms to the Max...)...You can eliminate that by flashing bare roms which remove Sprint and Sammy stuff ...Which are Bloat...Sum Devs include these with their work...Calk does I know for sure...As far as personal info you can decline to share when popups come up asking this...Most stuff is encrypted...Its the same on PC'S and Phones...If your that paranoid I would get rid of your phone and PC...
Ive been doin this for years and Im not worried or Paranoid in the least...![]()
I've been in the IT field for about 10 years and hold Comptia's Security+ certification so I am familiar with the basics of how phones and computers work and the security surrounding them. My concern is in regards to the stock roms that the devs provide... I would be surprised if they got them directly from the carrier...with that being said, where do these stock roms come from? What would be stopping someone from embedding a malicious apk in the rom? Is there a way to make sure there aren't any additional software embedded such as keyloggers, screen scrapers, etc?

That's why it's Open Source. It's completely open to peer review.![]()
Iowa...you mentioned open source. how would i go about looking at the source code of a Rom? ...not sure where to start. Can i load a Rom for example in some sort of VM?
