Still missing iOS apps

Dryasanne

Newbie
I have just upgraded from Iphone 4s to Sony xperia z.

There are some apps that I miss so badly, let me start with a few;

A - Nath Geographic World Map
Can not find any android map that presents the earth globe so nicely!

B - Birds of Northern Europe
Has Norwegian names.
Where is the serious bird app in android??

C Simplenote
D Goodreader
These two is easily replaced by Google apps,
Since I have several hundred docs in these apps - i would be nice to have them on my Sony

And last, the still not invented:

Photosync - syncs and copies every photo, every album between Iphone and Sony Xperia

Photosync - not sure about Sony's PC Companion software, but Samsung's Kies PC software can restore iPhone backups of messages, photos and other stuff into a Samsung phone. I suggest you check out Sony's PC Companion.

Nope. Found it. Weirdly, It doesn't show up on a search in the Play Store, but if I do a Google search for it, it shows up top spot to a "Google Earth Android" query. But it says incompatible to all of my device because it cannot be installed in my country..

Sony companion has one major flaw, like most such app

- it sync only the Camera album. Nothing else, all of 97 albums with a total of 4500 photos, are Not copied;)

google drive would like you transfer the pics to a server and then down to your device. if you just had to. take forever

But yes I would drop the pics to your PC then to the phone. I don't know about iphone to your pc, but from the pc to your android device its easy peasy. You can do it multiple ways too. I prefer to use the device as a USB mass storage and place the files where I want them to be in folders I name or create.

If you have a gallery app on your android device you will want to use the pictures folder on your memory card - name folders within that one.

Not sure if the Xperia z has mass storage mode. pity it doesnt have an sd slot. I think an sd read/writer is the best way to transfer stuff

Nice one, ive always respected Sony for being very android open source-friendly and now i respect them for forking a bit on the mass storage thing lol.
I just assumed being waterproof they wouldnt have gave it an SD slot.. thats cool *wants one now* :)

It has. Sony haven't followed Google's wishes and removed it from Android 4.1.x, presumably with a nod to non-PC users.
It does.

Lets take a deeep breath

A. My PC is a MacBook Pro 2012.
B. all my ios devices are free by Cydia

C. I have a photo library of 3499 photos, sorted into 97 albums . And a Camera Album of 210 photos

D. Most, if not all software I have tried only copy the Camera album. Some more advanced copy my photo libray of 3499. (So now I have the 3499 on my dropbox in one directory)
But none copy my 97 albums :)

E. ive tried some paid apps/ software. They indeed show me the 97 albums on my iphone - and they can copy one album at a time.

F. To get all 97 copied intact implies me making these 97 albums manually, then copy them

G. The crux : these 3499 photos doesnt exist on my PC! They was on a harddrive that crashed! So Im kind of "desperate" to get them back (and then to my xperia z to bring along to Betlehem)

My next step is to get mye 12560 notes from Simplenote ios app into Evernote app. Thus being able to sync them into Evernote on my Sony - with all tags intact - important. Oh yes - they are in Dropbox as txt files, but no tags ;(

That may be the best solution ultimately, in order to retain the folders as they are. Such is the way of moving between a closed ecosystem and a (more) open one I'm afraid.

Another option might be to export iPhotos to Picassa, which will automatically make the photos available on your Android device. I found this which may help.

I upload my own photo images to Picassa for just this reason; I can display them regardless of which device I'm using at the time.

As for the pictures, I'm not sure but I don't think you can fix the album arrangement. It has something to do with how iOS manages albums. Android manages albums in that one folder=one album. iOS I think works like Symbianv5 where it doesn't care if all the pics are in one folder in your PC or Mac, they're tagged into albums, which makes the transferring difficult.

Otherwise, sync iPhotos to Picasa as Slug says. Here's a guide I found:
How to Sync Android with Your Mac as Seamlessly as an iPhone

I just tried this Picasa.

After a short 15 min try out, my conclusion - crap, it doesnt work :-(

The Mac sw reads all the photos on my harddrive - ok.
But it does not see any thing else than the 53 photos on my Iphone, it doesnt see that large photo library I want to copy !

The Iphone software - hmm - just crappy app, not usable for elder folks like me...

And the Picasa android app is even worse, it logs into my picasa account - but then it says - "you have no web albums". And thats a lie for sure :-)

So, I have to choose, spending hours of reading picasa documentation, or move on to the next candidate. Wondershare Mobilgo has some impressive ads, but they charge 40 dollars, very expensive.

Why not just fix your computer and install iTunes? Then sync with your iPhone then sync your new phone with the Kies software?

Or use a friends computer?

I'm out of suggestions, then. I've never used a Mac but I made sure that the method discussed in the thread I linked in my previous post were confirmed as working. Many people have successfully exported their iPhoto collections to Picasa using it, so I don't know why it won't work for you.

Thats why Im moving to android ....

To move my photos to my mac seems to be impossible.

Even my trusted Itunes will not copy anything but the camera album,
My 97 albums will not be copied by Itunes.

When I had my iPhone 4 it was easy to connect to the PC as well. The PC will enable you to browse the camera and albums directory directly. I also used this back when I believe iOS didn't allow you to make albums. I was able to create them that way.

As stated, dump the pics from iPhone to PC, then PC to Android.

I didnt get any solution for the pictures. So I ve decided to bring along my trusted Iphone. No nice menories from the past then on my new Xperia :)

So. The world map. No luck finding any decent in Play market.

You need to know National Geographic world atlas Ipod app to know what Im looking for.
As with the pictures, there is no solution in Play market. Thus I have started to bring along my Ipad. Which is very awkvard in social settings, like dinner at my granddaughters house.

The Bird app. Yes - there are lots of good british apps at Play market, I now use Birds of Britain, fairly complete with songs. But no Norw names of course, I have to use the scientific names in Latin :(

Simplenote do exist. A poorly written app with ads, no pro version, that app is a true pain, but I can read all my notes.

--------
So - thats four badly missing apps. So Im still carrying along iOS devices. Along with my Xperia Z
And get reminded all the time, how much better the Sony performs all the time. My apple devices are really that good looking with some apps you cant live without, but iOS is really oldish in performance, slow and 2009. My Xperia is really 2013, a lightening fast performer, it is much more helpful than both my jailbroken apple devices, just try and write a text sms while you at the same time google, look in Maps, play Walkman and check the weather! Even my jb Ipad 3 have a hard time doing these four apps at the same time, in my Sony - these apps flows fast and snappy ;)

Sorry I got carried away by this new tech. I miss so much my four apps....
