Root Stock 2.1 to Fully Rooted Froyo 2.2

I've already rooted my phone, but not with the unrevoked method, I rooted it before that came out when it. Do I have to do anything else, or do I start at step 1 even though I am already rooted? Will anything weird happen if I try and root my already rooted phone? I don't have clockworkmod, just Superuser.

I am not sure this method would work for you. Although I know on the Unrevoked website they have links for the ClockworkMod and Amon-Ra Recovery system, so you could try loading Forever and see if it works and then go back to Stock Recovery and then load the update. But again I am not sure this would work and I can not recommend it, since I used the unrevoked 3 method. You may want to check around the forums and also at XDA and see if there is another way to get the update and still maintain root.

Sorry...wish you the best of luck...

Awesome guide, worked like a charm. I would add (for those that don't know, I didn't) that you need to load HTC Sync on the computer to run the RUU, and the best place to find it is on the DINC itself!

lpeckazca...glad to see it work for you. I guess in all the excitement of getting Froyo you missed Step 5 B. which stated to Install HTC Sync. Sorry for the confusion and Welcome to your Phone Forever and don't forget to give a shout out to unrEVOked for all their hard work!!!

Step 4: Flash HTC Stock Recovery Image through hboot -> [Recovery] Stock 2.1 Recovery Image for DI - xda-developers

A) Put the file you downloaded from the above site on the root (i.e. not in a folder) of your SD card and hBoot apply. This should happen automatically. If it doesn’t, then either the file is corrupt or your SD Card is not formated to FAT32. Check both and retry.)

B) Boot into hBoot by turning off your phone and then hold the volume down button and the power button until it boots into hboot. Once in hboot, it should ask you if you want to apply the update, click the volume up button to apply the update. Once it is down, it the volume up button to reboot the phone.

C) This will restore the recovery back to stock as it is needed for the RUU. Now you have an s-off phone with everything else stock.

I appear to be stuck here. I put the file (PB31IMG.zip) on my sd card, rebooted into hboot, it asked if I wanted to run the update and I said yes. The update was successful (it took like 2 seconds) and then asked me if I wanted to reboot. I said yes and my phone came back without any changes, I appear to still have root.

I checked and made sure my partition was fat32.

Yaksha, you are good to go. All this step did was remove the ClockworkMod Recovery Image and replace with the Stock HTC Recovery Image. It does not take the Root away. The RUU or Update will do that. Although you can not boot back into ClockworkMod Recovery now until after you do either the RUU or Update/OTA.

Thanks, got it working! Everything seems great, Wireless Tether is working, which was the main reason I wanted to retain root. Excellent guide!

Glad to hear that you got it working. Welcome to your Phone Forever!!! The Wireless Tethering is awesome. That is the main reason I rooted as well. Although I am finding myself leaning to towards flashing some ROMS here soon.

I saw it but in my newness to this, was not sure that it was aimed at the DINC or the computer. Same for the RUU, but at least the instructions spelled out running the RUU on the computer. In any case, fine job putting this together and all the players involved, especially unrEVOked. Now if there was only a mod to allow free 3G roaming in Canada for my next trip LOL. Have to use WIFI for the DINC and talk on the work BB.

Just wanted to say thanks for the directions. Was on rooted 2.1, now to fully rooted 2.2. Only issue I had was with Windows 7 x64. Loaded HTC sync on a laptop that I havent used with my phone yet and it worked first time (Windows 7 x64 as well). sooo thanks!

Heya, just finished up with this guide. Everything works so far, cept now my phone yells out 'DROOOIIIID' every time I turn it on

But hey, if that's the worst thing that happened, I'd say I came away pretty unscathed :) Muchos gracias!

The DROOOIIIID Sound is on everyone's phone now. Search the forums here and at XDA, there is a way to remove it if you want. Welcome to your Phone Forever. Also keep an eye on Unrevoked, it looks like they have rooted 2.2 already. I was in the testing last night and the process is very easy to get 2.2 rooted with S-off.
