Root stock 2.1 to rooted 2.2

I am new at this so please excuse my ignorance on rooting. I am wanting to go from stock 2.1 to rooted 2.2. How exactly do I do this? can use the easy root app? Thanks in advance for any help

You can, but I recommend against it. A few people have reported serious problems after using Easy Root. Your best bet is to follow the rooting instructions in the thread entitled "The guide to all things root related". It's a little more time consuming, but it is the best way to get working root without problems. Just make sure to follow the directions exactly. Plenty of us are here to help if you get stuck.

Once you're rooted via that method, you can just install a rooted 2.2 ROM.
 
Its a long process, but this guide (even though it says from 2.2 to rooted 2.2) will get you the same results. its using the same SBF file to flash the recovery partition that you would use to root 2.1. Follow it step by step and it will get you there. If you want to keep all your settings and data, use one of the stock rooted roms he has listed in the steps and DO NOT WIPE. going this route, you will end up with the 2.2 OTA with root access. good luck

Thanks guys for the info. I am still uncertain about doing this, I want to be able to play with overclocking, have wifi tethering and possibly be able to do further updates past 2.2 and maybe different with themes.

Also does stock 2.2 only go to 600mhz or does it go to 800?

stock is 600 on 2.2. to overclock you will have to flash different kernals. check out this thread http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-droid/136508-guide-all-things-root-related.html and read up on flashing kernals. as far as wifi tether, about all the custom roms have it built in.

4.) Run command prompt (Start->Run then type "cmd" and hit enter)
5.) Change directories to your C:\ root directory (cd c:\)
6.) Type in "md5sum SPRecovery_ESE81.sbf"
7.) Make sure the sum of the image is EXACTLY 9b6a336cd8f067d4487935468c758d89

Also will doing this clear all my data/info like contacts, text, apps, call log?
have you tried the Sapphire roms?

Those steps just verify the download/files match what they should be.

I don't think flashing just the recovery .sbf will wipe your info, but you will probably need to wipe it anyways when you flash the new ROM.

Sapphire is a good rom, but I personally prefer cyanogenmod. jrummy, chevy, and pete (bugless beauty) all make pretty popular roms as well.

Any of the above will give you the ability to do what you want to do however. It all comes down to personal opinion as to which one is better.

If you follow OMJ's guide and load a stock rooted rom. you DO NOT wnat to wipe. doing this will save all data and apps on your phone. after you get one of those roms installed, go get Titanium Backup from the market. it will back up all your app. your contact are automatically backed up by google. once you have a Ti-BU, flash your custom roms, reload Ti-BU from the market and restore. there ya have it. :)
 
ok i got to this part
15.) Now you are in SPRecovery. Click on install (Note you can use the volume rocker to navigate and the camera button to select.)
16.) Press allow update.zip Installation
17.) Press Install /sdcard/update.zip (deprecated)
but it aborts. do i need to unzip the files before they go on the sd card?

No, they need to stay zipped.
Check on your computer and make sure that the file didn't end up being named update.zip.zip (as it will if you rename the file to update.zip but you have your computer set to not show file extensions).
 
it says
E: cant mount /dev/block.mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/blocl/mmcblk0)
(no such file or directory)
E: cant mount SDCARD :update.zip
installation abortet.

on my computer it is named "update" on the sdcard it is "update.zip"
 
you still have a copy of the of the update on your PC?
Try to copy it over again. Remember not to put it inside any folders on the SD Card.
Then try steps 16 +17 again.
 
you know how you just added that ROM, same way. Find a 2.2 that you like (I'm on BB v.4) rename it to update.zip, throw on SD Card, reboot into recovery, wipe data/cache, allow install, then install.
Same with the Kernel that you decide to install, only you won't need to wipe data and cache.
Your contacts should be synced to google so all of those will refresh themselves after boot up

If you followed my guide then you are on 2.2. All you need to do is install a kernel and get setcpu off the market
 
i will give it a try thanks a million. do you have a link to that rom and where is a good place to get the kernals?
 
download ROM manager from the market. makes things supper easy. you can download assorted ROMs and kernals from it and install them.
