Root Stock apps/voicemail

Leslie Ann

Android Expert
I just took delivery of one of these for my mom yesterday and I noticed it is different than the box. The box and promo pictures all show Twitter, Facebook, Virgin Mobile Live, Shazaam and Voicemail on the desktop. This one has none of those.

Frankly, I really don't care about any except the voicemail shortcut. That would be nice to have, but did any of these actually come with it?

If so, can anyone attach a copy of it?

Edit: Not sure how this got posted in root. Grrrr

Have you activated yet? Mine was pretty bloat free until I activated it and then MobileId installs the Essentials pack which installs a bunch of different apps I guess VM thinks you want :) I know a few if them were Facebook, VirginMobile Live, Tuning Fork, Wikipedia, Shazaam and a few more.. I just went in and removed them right after it installed them. I used mine on wifi only for about a week and wasn't until it was activated and hit 3g that it downloaded

Yes there was a voicemail shortcut

I can't recall if the voicemail app was there before I activated the phone, but it makes sense that it was not. I bought my phone and activated it on the night of 6/4/2012, but the voicemail app seems to have installed on 6/7/2012. I don't think the voicemail app was added from a Mobile ID download, but I could be wrong.

On my phone, the voicemail app seems to be located here:
/data/app/com.sprint.voicemail-1.apk

No, Virgin Mobile does not support visual voice mail.
Actually, it does.
The Evo V has it (I LOVE IT!) and I intend to try it on the Elite once I get it activated and rooted.

I'll attach the APK in hopes will give it a try. It may or may not work, and it may need rebuilding for the screen size. Keep in mind, they are changing Virgins voicemail tomorrow (26th), so it may not work until then. I suspect they are moving all of it to Sprint's system.

I also plan to try and dump the rom from the phone. If I can, I'll upload a bone stock/rooted version so people can build from, as well as a copy of Harmonia 3. I won't be able to maintain them because I have limited access to the phone, but it will be enough to get the ball rolling on roms. If I can, I will also de-odex it. This won't happen till Friday probably, and only IF I can dump it.

Vm-roms - Visual Voicemail APK

Hey Leslie, I know this is off topic but.... are you gonna start developing for the Optimus Elite? Nevermind I should've read your previous post. Awesome!!!

Godspeed. I had hoped JerryScript would take this project on (as he did an amazing job with the OV) but he has been rather quiet lately. I welcome any devs that want to tackle this device!

Visual voicemail works just fine in the elite. Actually a nice feature! Thanks Leslie for posting the apk.
Fantastic, my mother will love it!

While it in itself is nice and convenient, it's a nice bonus as it saves you minutes. If I do put together a rom, I will be sure to include it.

I really wish they had released the Elite back in January, I would never have bought my Evo 4g or Evo V, it's really a nice little phone. Sooooo thin compared to the Evo V.

Yeah I really enjoy my Elite. I do miss the custom rom's that were available for the OV but were getting close to some custom rom's I think. I'd like to see you make a supped up deodexed stock rom.

I'm just debating rooting before activating, it would give me an extra day to mess with it, but also a bit risky on activation, though I doubt it will matter, so I may mess with it tonight.

Once I get a rom pull from the phone, we are in business. Source will be helpful as well, but ANY rom would be nice at this point. If all else fails, I can mod stock, pull a nandroid and upload that. I doubt it will come to that, but I wouldn't be the first to do it.

Unfortunately, it's not quite as easy as people like to think.

Just following directions doesn't cut it. I run a build server for people so I don't have to, because it's a pain in the butt. Building from source, pretty much has to be your hobby.

You can't just decide one day "Gee, I feel like trying something new today, how about building from source". After about a week of sheer frustration you might get a rom. Then some repo will make a change, and here comes another 3 days of hell. You get a few builds and again, another repo may change... Ad Nauseum. It can be rewarding, but it can also be one of the most frustrating things you will do.

There is a reason pretty much no one built anything from LG/VM source for the Optimus V. It was a nightmare.

OK I was just saying they released it today, nothing implied.

"....Source would be helpful..." hence my response.

I did an RTN reset on my Elite after rooting and reactivated it with no issue. I don't see there being any issues if you do but I can see you being a bit cautious

I plan to root here in a bit.
We have to be able to activate after root or we would always have to unroot to activate, so no reason not to.

I just confirmed on my Evo 4g that I can dump the boot.img and can copy off system files (though I got a lot of odd extra files and need to find out why). That means I can pull all we need out of the phone, I just need to build the installer for recovery. I have been through Harmonia's enough that I don't think it will be an issue.

No time tables, I don't want to jinx anything, instead, I will just say SOOOOOON!

Rooted, and I pulled the System folder and build prop, etc... Jcase happened to already pull the Boot.img. Whioch means we now have enough to assemble a rom. I just need to build an installer.

After that, we just need a working recovery and testers, since I will lose access to this phone soon. We will probably have two roms before we have a working recovery. LOL
