Stop Underestimating The Nexus

I'm starting to wonder if that's a coincidence that the ONLY LTE band that it supports so happens to be the one that T-Mobile is planning on launching next year.

Something tells me it was planned.

Google pulls the Android 4.2 factory image for the Google Nexus 4

"There is some speculation that the removal of the factory image has something to do with the dormant LTE radio that lies inside the Google Nexus 4. A hack has allowed those near a Band 4 (AWS) signal to have some LTE connectivity on the phone. If Google is planning to send out an update to block any LTE hack from working, the pulling of the current factory image would make sense. It is also possible that Google was feeling some heat from the FCC on this subject."

Google might remove the LTE option on this phone since it's not registered as an LTE device with the FCC and they could get in a lot of trouble for that.

What the heck do you Verizon-customers use your phone for that you need 4GLTE speeds over HSPA+ or even 3G?

We need LTE because there is not HSPA+ or even standard HSPA on Verizon. Verizon 3g is roughly the same speed of T-Mobile 2g/EDGE. Not that it matters with the nexus 4 because it doesn't work on Verizon. I agree with you that not having LTE on AT&T or T-mobile isn't that big of a deal because there is usable speeds between 2g and LTE. On Verizon & Sprint, there isn't unless you happen to have a Sprint WiMax phone from a year ago:p.

Actually I didn't pay my VMUSA bill in anticipation of receiving the N⁴. The phone calls and 3G services are off but I can still connect to WiMax lol so I've been using WiFi, WiMax and Groove IP/Google Voice for phone calls and texts. Basically free service. It's a good thing I live in an excellent WiMax coverage area.

I can't complain with free data and speeds like these

Definitely, I guarantee that they will have to push out an update disabling the AWS band because it was never type approved by the FCC for operation on those frequencies, if they don't LG would be liable for some hefty fines

so if you never update your droid does that mean you'll keep the lte portion unlocked and enabled. granted the reason for getting the phone for most is because of the updates that will be pushed right away. (not me personally i needed a new phone/wanted a easy modded phone with lots of custom roms available) so in essence will i be able to keep lte and if it works on t-mobile in the US that is if i stick with custom roms what do u guys think?

Apparently that's already been done with 4.2.1.

Oh it will get patched in the official OS, but this is going to be one of the most modded phones in the Android universe. I guarantee someone will hack the option back in. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You have been misinformed sir. The LTE option is still available. Also I hate to propose or support conspiracies but it is seriously fishy that Google's new besty T-Mobile is the only carrier that benefits from the dormant LTE band. (Not that I'm complaining mind you)

The phone is capable of reception on other LTE bands besides AWS, now this is the strange part, this would still be useless without additional circuitry, namely the power amps which happened to be on board for this band. Anandtech went through the whole phone with signal injectors and that's the only band that has the required parts installed.

Exactly. I think they said it also had band 1,2,&3 but 4 was the only one with a power amp and that just happens to be T-Mobile domain. Like I said, suspicious...

That's what I was saying, the only band that has an amplifier is band 4...the band that T-Mobile plans to launch LTE on.

I prefer HSPA+ 42 anyhow. Battery life is pretty important to me.

here are my numbers for apples versus apples comparison on AT&T:

Renew 2 year contract, buy iphone 5 with activation, shipping and tax for $250. Sell said iPhone on ebay for $700 after shipping and transaction cost.
Buy nexus 16GB for $380 including tax and shipping. Cancel LTE data and get Medianet and save $480 (24 months @ $20 less).

Total savings: $550,= (-$250 + $700 - $380 + $480)

ps now that apple has started selling iphone unlocked you might have to sell internationally to get 700, but three weeks ago I sold 2 in one day.

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS A RANT. IF YOU HAVE NO INTEREST IN MY OPINION I UNDERSTAND BUT PLEASE MOVE ALONG.

As I read one Nexus 4 review after another there is a certain pattern that keeps emerging. That meme is of course that the Nexus 4 is a "niche" phone* which is of course due to the reviewer assuming we all have as much money as they do and that we could very easily get on any phone on any network because "Look how great the economy is doing!"

THIS IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THIS

My message to these people is simple: "GET OUT OF YOUR IVORY TOWER!"

Do you really think there is a comparison between these two things?

Nexus4 on T-Mobile (1 year of service on most basic plan)

Phone = $299.00

Value plan w/Unlimited Data = $30.00 x 12

Annual cost of ownership = $659.00

Samsung Galaxy S3 on Verizon (1 year of service on most basic plan)

Phone = $199.00

Basic Plan w/only 1GB of data. = $90.00 x 12

Annual cost of ownership = $1279.00

The numbers speak for themselves folks.**

*=THIS IS A NICHE PHONE

**= I'm pretty sure these numbers are accurate but even if I'm off by a little my point will remain strong.

While it used to seem to be underestimated this has seemed to have stopped now. If anything this phone is very highly regarded.

CNET decided to leave the Nexus4 off their "best of 2012" list (the list included the Pantech Burst)

This it just the latest slap in the face from the main stream tech establishment

Needless to say I have uninstalled their app from my phone.

The Pantech Burst is LTE. As I've said many times you HAVE to have LTE in the states to get a good review. Face it this phone isn't going mainstream in the US. I just hope it's a global success as I'd hate to see Google back away from this.

What's stupid is that the reason he liked the Burst is it's reasonable price tag and yet they completely ignored the Nexus's ridiculous price tag and gave praise to the Optimus G instead.

Read the Anandtech review and compare it to CNET... It seriously makes them look like a joke. (But then again Anandtech does that to pretty much everyone)
