Root Strange.....

Just encountered something strange on my Desire.

I'm running LeeDroid 2.4.1 with Apps2SD+ and I thought I'd check out this LiveProfile app that everybody is going on about.

My phone has 120MB of internal storage prior to installing LiveProfile, which is 3.72MB in size.

After installation my inteneral memory dropped to 113MB. I found this strange, as the size of the app and amount of memory I lost were different, and I am running a ROM with A2SD+.

I uninstalled the app and rebooted my phone and my internal memory remained at 113MB, meaning 7MB of internal memory had disappeared!

I restored a Nadroid backup I made a few days ago and restored that and my internal memory is back to what it was.

I don't mind losing internal memory over time. As a matter of fact I expect it. However, 7MB for an app that isn't even 4MB in size while running an A2SD+ ROM is strange, especially as the memory didn't increase when I uninstalled the app.

Any ideas as to why this happened?

Cheers.

I could be way off the mark here, but I think this might have something to do with caches. I'm no expert, so as I say just a guess.

If you go to settings > applications > manage applications, the weird green graph thing at the bottom should show internal storage. On mine currently for example, it shows 78mb used / 70mb free. However, this doesn't include app cache. If I then go (having done nothing) to settings / storage, my phone shows 52.60mb free internal memory.

If I then open up quick system info and clear system and app caches, both these internal memory info bits match again.

Maybe, this is the cause of the missing mb data? It is stored as app cache, so can easily be obtained but it only shows up in certain settings - hence the apparent sudden disappearance of internal memory?

The app cache would have cleared after the uninstall.
This also applies to apps user data, which is again in internal memory.
My guess is that the extra space was taking by the app library, that wasn't removed after the uninstall. Perhaps it can be identified and removed manually.

Thanks for the responses so far.

I've done some further investigation and it seems that LiveProfile wasn't the cause for the sudden memory loss.

I was using my phone without LiveProfile installed (as I restored a Nandroid backup) and was prompted to update a couple of apps in the market - off the top of my head that were Flash Player and GoogleMaps. After installing the updates the internal memory decreased rapidly do 110MB.

Once again, the maths didn't add up. However, something prompted some internal memory to disappear when installing something. It originally occured when I installed LiveProfile and it's also occured when I performed the above updates. I'm just baffled as to why it occurs and where it goes.

One more thing: if you left the Dalvik cache in the internal memory (instead of moving it to SD-EXT), then it is possible that you will loose internal memory in the process.
