Help Streaming Audio Problem--Please Help (Issue Resolved Post #32)

Hey, guys, I'm having a strange problem with streaming audio which I'd really appreciate if someone could confirm and perhaps help me troubleshoot. I'm certain this is a MoPho specific issue--I'll explain why below...

BACKGROUND:

I am a "feed provider"--I put a police scanner online through radioreference.com which monitors Indianapolis (Marion Co, Indiana) police agencies' dispatch channels. It's a digital system which is difficult to monitor; it requires an expensive radio, ideally located and programmed correctly. At any given time, from a handful to dozens (or more) people listen online via PC's, Macs, and SmartPhones of all manner and description.

I use the paid version of a free app, Scanner Radio by Gordon Edwards, (which I'm sure many of you use--it's a great app) to enjoy and keep tabs on my feed. A couple of days ago, my audio went to hell on the MoPho. I'm hearing brief, spurious bursts of noise during both periods of silence and during transmissions. These can occur from a few seconds to a minute or more apart. I hear these same problems using Wunder Radio to monitor my feed.

I also hear a different problem when monitoring NOAA weather broadcasts using both apps. It manifests itself a bit differently, but I'm convinced it's the same basic issue. On those broadcasts, it seems that the audio might be playing a very slight bit too slowly, and "catches up" via an intermittent, steady, cyclic, nearly instantaneous "skip". It sounds something like this...

"In Indianlis, at eight PM the temperature was eighty-en degrees, and the relative humidity was seventy-two peent" with no pauses--the audio is continuous.

SOLUTIONS I'VE TRIED:

1. Confirmed problem is MoPho specific by monitoring same sources with same apps on a Galaxy Tab. Everything sounded fine.

2. Changed DNS server and Port Addresses to 0,0,0,0 and 0, respectively. No improvement noted.

3. Factory-reset MoPho. Installed just Scanner Radio Pro. Problem was still present.

4. Have tried wi-fi, 3G, and 4G. Problem exists in all cases.

5. Scanner Radio (free and pro both) have an option to stream via their own built-in player or the native Android media player. Problem exists using both.

CONCLUSION:

If anyone wants to have a go at this, my specific feed can be found in Scanner Radio at Browse, Browse by area, United States, Indiana, Marion County, Marion County Police Dispatch. I'm at a loss--I'm confounded and I hope someone can help me work this out.

If anyone could test this for me, I'd really appreciate it. I have no idea what's going on here, but it's literally a three-minute test if anyone's using Scanner Radio or Wunder Radio already. This issue is making me CRAZY... Thanks.

This is INSANE... this problem doesn't affect local radio streaming via Wunder Radio, but the scanners and weather are unlistenable on my MoPho via both players... I really need some help with this.

Do you know what codec you're using on the computer your scanner is plugged to? Maybe you need to change the codec or the bitrate to find one that's compatible with your Photon.

You don't have any problems while listening to the feed from another computer or another handset? Is it possible your outbound stream is the problem?

Thanks for your response... My outbound is fine when monitored from a Galaxy Tab or any of the PC-compatible players. It seem like this is a Mo-Pho specific issue (well, at least my Mo-Pho, even after a hard-reset).

The problem exists both using the native Android media player and the built-in Scanner Radio player, and it also exists using Wunder Radio. That's why I've concluded that it's MoPho-specific. It's also present when streaming via 3G, 4G, and wi-fi.

Is there anything I can configrue on the MoPho that might help?

I am experiencing the same issue with streaming audio. My problem is when trying to listen to MLB's At Bat application. The broadcasters calling baseball games sound just like your description of the halting/cryptic audio. No issues, however, with streaming music from the stock Music app. I don't know what to do to fix it.

Music which is on my SD is no problem either. Can you test police scanner audio using Scanner Radio (free) and see if you hear any problems there? Thanks.

I really hope to get feedback from a few more of us. I'm really close to considering this a "deal-breaker, return the phone" issue (especially if MR-5 doesn't resolve it).

Thanks... I'm having no problems with music (streaming radio). It's scanners and weather via Scanner Radio and Wunder Radio that seem to be the problem, and need further testing and troubleshooting.

i too have the same problem with my feed (Hammond indiana) and have been in contact with Gordon and he has no clue... for the time being i am using Tune in radio and all is fine,,,,I think it may be the way the mopho decodes audio.... weird and frustrating

Maybe we need to get Motorola involved here... I'll try TuneIn and report back. I doubt Gordon can find much, since Wunder Radio is borked, too...

Anyone tried checking Amazon's cloud player? Does that skip as well or does it work just fine? Just trying to think of additional streaming apps/services that might help narrow down the problem.

I reconfigured my feed today, using a different radio (Uniden HomePatrol-1) connected via headphone jack rather than line out. Same problem. This is quickly escalating to a "deal-breaker" issue for me.

whats bizarre is tunein works great for me... I too would really hate to go back to my PRE

I'm going to post this at xda-developers and see if they can track it down before I send this damn thing back or smash it into a million pieces. I can't believe more people aren't complaining about this.

That's probably going to be your best bet. My guess is that it has something to do with the cache storage on the audio, it's probably buffering but it's happening so fast it's just picking up the last bit of the cache if that makes any sense? I have a lot of knowledge on streaming video but not much on audio. I would be willing to bet though it's a "buffer" problem with your player. Not sure why it would work with everything else but not this specific audio though. I wouldn't think it has anything to do with the audio codec as when you have codec problems you would have much bigger issues than simply some light skipping or noises in between. I'll ask some people who are experts on streaming media (I worked in this field for a few years) and see if I can find anything out.

Yes, I changed both proxys to 0 and both addresses to 0,0,0,0 under ##DATA# > Multimedia.

I just installed the leaked final maintenance release (with no problems) and that didn't help a bit (I didn't expect it to).

Thanks--looking forward to what your friends might have to say.

Well looks like because a cell phone is involved my friend's guess was as good as mine. He just said that it more then likely has to do with the OS and not a codec or anything like that. He did suggest if you are streaming it yourself that it could be server side but he didn't give me specifics. I still feel like it's gotta be how the cache is being stored, though the weird noises might suggest otherwise. I'll try to get him to dig a little deeper into it.

Oh one more question, is there any way for you to get the stream address and try streaming it through a regular media player?
