Root Stuck in Bootloop with no Recovery

Rico1919

Lurker
H-Boot-2.18.001
S-ON
amon ra 2.3
MikG v3.11

Like others, I seem to have gotten stuck in bootloop and cannot get into recovery. I rooted and installed the ROM per this guide:

http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html

The phone has been working like a charm for a couple of months and it just started rebooting in my pocket a few days ago and has been stuck ever since.

When trying to boot as normal, it displays the white HTC Evo 4G screen for a while and then eventually turns off and back on to the same screen. When trying to enter recovery, the white HTC Evo 4G screen displays and stays there (does not ever turn off and back on).

I have tried following the troubleshooting in this thread with no luck. I have tried to flash the recovery image twice now but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you all very much for maintaining all of the information on this site, very helpful.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!

i'm sorry to hear that you are having issues. so you can't get recovery to flash, correct? have you tried a ruu? what is your baseband(radio)? can you get to the bootloader?

Thanks for the welcome and the quick reply.

In response to your questions:

That is correct that I cannot get the recovery to flash.

I have not tried a ruu as I had seen some others advise against it for unlocked phones. Assuming that these are ok to try, can you point me towards a recommended ruu so I can give it a shot?

My radio is 2.15.00.12.19 and I am able to get to the bootloader.

Thanks again.

ok so here is an overview on what you may need to do:
1.re-lock the bootloader
2.flash the ruu
3.unlock the bootloader
4.install recovery.
5.either nandroid restore or flash a rom.

here is the ruu that you will need:
PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.67.651.3_Radio_2.15.00.12.19_NV_2.33_release_234563_signed

if you need specific details let me know.

Got the phone relocked. Getting hung up on flashing the RUU. First, when I download the zip file and try to open it in windows explorer, I get an error that the folder is invalid. It seems that the person in this thread had the same issue but that the zip should be fine. I tried to flash the zip using "fastboot update PC36IMG.zip" but received the error:

Whoops: didn't find expected signature
read_central_directory_entry failed
error: failed to access zip data in .....(long string)

I'm not sure if it is a file issue or if I am going about flashing it wrong. I know I can also put the zip onto the root of the SD card but I'm not entirely sure how to push the file there since I cannot mount it through recovery. I found what I think is an exe of the zipped RUU provided here. Not sure if those would work or not for my current situation. Again, your advice and patience are very much appreciated.

do not open(extract) the ruu, leave it zipped. you need to rename the file so that it is PC36IMG.

now the issue where folks get mixed up is how to rename it:

if your pc hides extensions(.zips, .exe, .bat and so forth) then make sure not to add an extra .zip to the name. you can just delete everything in the name but leave the PC36IMG part.

if your pc is setup so that the extensions is shown then make sure that the .zip part in the name is present. you will need to make sure that the file name is PC36IMG.zip.

hope that makes sense.

The file is named as PC36IMG.zip. Was the approach of the "fastboot update PC36IMG.zip" correct or do I need to get it onto the root of the SD card somehow?

not sure i have never flashed it as such. not sure if you can fastboot flash it like that. it would be better if you can move the zip file over to the sd card. do you have a card reader or adapter?

Well it looks like from reading around that adb commands will not work when in fastboot (conflicts with some other guide that I read). "fastboot devices" displays my phone but "adb devices" comes up with nothing. I will try to get my hands on a card reader and report back. Thanks for all of your help thus far. Breaking your phone sure is a good way to force yourself to learn all of the ins and outs...

yeah i was not sure with the state of your phone if adb will work or not.....well just keep us posted.

After banging my head against the wall with adb for a while, I remembered that I had an adapter sitting in a drawer upstairs (doh!). Anyways, file is transferred and hboot picks it up but I am getting a "Main Version is older!" error and the update fails. Is this a version issue with Hboot 2.18.0001? Doing some quick research, it looks like others have tried to downgrade their Hboot to solve which really gets into brick territory...

Just curious as to what Android version you are on.? 4.67.xxx or 5.07.xxx.

Edit: to find out, boot into bootloader and highlight fastboot.
plug the phone into the computer.
Open adb and type
fastboot getvar all

then post back the results:)

@Ocn...I wonder if he is on 5.07.xxx??? and that is why the PC36IMG file spits out that error.? I know the baseband is the same but......

Also, why relock the bootloader for a PC36IMG.zip file ruu?

yeah there is no 5.07 ruu that was released. i forgot that it has the same radios as the 4.67 ruu.

and any ruu regardless of a PC36IMG or .exe file needs to be re-locked in order for it to work with s-on phones.

let me see what we can do with where your phone's state is at. it might be difficult with no recovery.

Great advice guys, not much more to add. Without a recovery or an appropriate ruu there is not much we can do :(

Only thing I can think of,is ry launching your recovery into phone memory, rather than trying to flash it permantly, then booting to it. Youl need to reunlock the bootloader, then use a simlar command to how you flashed it:

fastboot boot recoveryname.IMG

Hopefully this will boot up your recovery, and you'll see its menu. If so,there may be a thing or 2 we can try :)

Nice idea but no dice. Sounds like I may be out of luck unless someone has another suggestion. I'm guessing rolling back via methods like this or this will not work due to the fact that I cannot send adb commands? Well thanks all for the help; learning some of the dirty details was fun and will be used for hopefully some better success the next time around. Does anyone know if I do have a Protection Plan if something like this would still be covered? Consensus seemed to be elsewhere that a software failure post-root would not go over well.

well we are getting into a grey area where anything we say would promote insurance fraud. the only thing i can say is just not saying anything about it. if you do not lie you are not doing anything wrong.

rooting does void warranty and most insurance coverages do not cover rooting as well..........just an fyi....good luck.

Correct. Inability to use adb keeps us from being able to modify the main version and downgrade. If booting the recovery had worked,we can use adb in recovery,so we may have been able to make one of those work.

Unfortunatly, what your experiencing sounds like a typical EVO 4g hardware failure,so even if an ruu was available, there prolly wasn't much hope :(

I suppose if there is ever a time when the phone decides to boot up, just run back here and have a look-see at that guide on xda that you linked?

Ocn/Scotty concur? you 2 guys know lots more than I do:p

yes well this is typical of the og evo's famous bootloop of death, so i doubt that it will ever boot up. but you never know.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!

ok first off you posted in the htc evo 4g all things root forum. any advice found here in this forum will not work for your phone.

second of all you have what is called an off brand phone. and unfortunately off brand devices are hard to support. there is not enough information about them. i wish i could help you.

here is a little explaination about off brand devices:
http://androidforums.com/android-lounge/631594-off-brand-phones-tablets-worth-low-cost.html

and lastly you might want to try and create a thread in the Android Lounge - Android Forums. you will get more views there as we do not even have a subforum for your phone.

good luck.
