Root Stuck on Velocity screen and it gets worse

nwh10

Newbie
I installed ROM Manager on my LG Ally, rebooted into recovery mode, backed up the entire system, and installed Velocity 1.0. The Velocity installation appeared to end successfully.

From the recovery menu, I selected Reboot System Now. My phone is stuck on the Velocity screen, and I have to pull the battery to shut it off.

I have booted into system recovery thinking that I need to do a system restore. I can use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move up and down the menu, but the OK key does not produce any results. I can't get into any of the menu selections.

Please help me get this phone working!

Depending on which recovery you are using, if the OK key doesn't work, try using enter.

I don't believe using ROM Manager is the recommended way to install V1.0 anyway. You just need to get updated to rooted Froyo with recovery, then go into recovery, wipe data and caches, and select to install the Velocity zip from there. I haven't done anything with ROM Manager since still being stuck on Android 2.1.

You ARE updated to 2.2 rooted, right?

The Enter key! You are a genius; I am an idiot!

Yes, the phone is 2.2 rooted. I installed the Velocity zip from Recovery, but I did not wipe data and caches. Maybe that's the problem?

What's your recommendation at this point? Restore? Wipe & try reinstalling from zip?

Well, I'm having trouble restoring from backup. It can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2, and it can't find sdcard/nandroid. That's because it doesn't exist on the sdcard even though I clearly saw the backup going to that folder. There are several other backup directories on the sdcard, though.

As for the root guide, I got very tangled up with Ally Recovery image (http://androidforums.com/getitnowmarketing/146564-ally-recovery-img-here-custom-roms.html). The top of that post discusses ROM Manager, but it's not at all clear which steps should be followed.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Aftereffekt, with that information, the phone is up, running, and restoring from Titanium backup. Those were just the clues I needed. Many, many thanks. And I'm about to hit the Thank You button. :) Really appreciated.

Clockworkmod Nandroids are NOT compatible with ra_gnm_aloha recovery images. Velocity and Frunisher use RA_GNM_Aloha recovery v1.2.5 which is the latest.

Sounds to me like you made the backup in clockwork mod and thats why you cant restore it.

Death, you're correct that I made the backup in Clockwork from within ROM Manager. Luckily, I also had a Titanium backup which came to the rescue.

I read a lot of technical docs, I do application implementations and support, and am by no means a tech newbie. I found the instructions in the ROM/Root guide and linked threads to be incomplete in some areas and generally confusing. For example, in the How to Flash ROM's thread, the second thread discusses ROM manager. And in the Ally Recovery.img thread, the first paragraph says to install ROM manager. But it's not clear whether to do this instead of all the other instructions, in addition to them, or exactly when. (That doc in particular has many unclear instructions. It wants you to use flash_image, but doesn't say where to find it. Etc., etc.)

If there is incorrect or misleading information in the threads that are supposed to be instructive, it would be very helpful if it were cleaned up.

I very much appreciate the help I've received here.

Just wanted to add for anyone viewing this thread in the future that for me, the volume and send buttons would not work to navigate the recovery menu. I had to use left/right and enter on the keyboard as nwh10 did.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for the info. ^_^

This depends on your recovery. If you're using AmonRa, the navigation is totally different than if you're using Clockwork recovery.
