Help Stupid Beginner's Question

Hi guys....

We took our new phones and sat outside a McDonald's for free WI FI. (Haven't yet activated the 3G).

Downloaded some neat apps. My head was spinning! I'm amazed by this thing!

It appears that I do not have a phone number. Just for the heck of it, I tried to make a call.... twice. Immediately got a recording from Virgin Mobile telling me to activate it.

Question: I had read that I could make wifi calls prior to activation. Is that true? If so, how?

Thanks. I'm brand new at this.

That's ^ what I was trying to pull out of my rusty brain. Thank's brotherswing.

I just set up a Google Voice using my old cellphone number. As far as VOIP goes, I'm thinking that I'll start with something free.

Let me do some searching. When I complete that step, I'll bug you guys further. (no doubt) :)

I SINCERELY appreciate your help. Many thanks. Hopefully, before too long, I can be of help to other new comers!

I wonder if I should start all over and let Google pick my number? I signed up my OLD (current) AT&T number that I hope to move to my OV when I activate it.

My head be full!

sipdroid is a little easier these days since you no longer have to mess with configuring a trunk through pbxes.org. sipdroid does that for you automatically now.

But first you need a gmail account, and a Google Voice number connected to that account.

You might want to set up a separate gmail account for this, since sipdroid & pbxes.org will be using your gmail account and password for connecting.

After you get the Google Voice number, go to Google Voice settings and add your mobile number, but don't check the box for forwarding calls to that number.

Also in GV settings, check the box to forward calls to Google Chat. This is so you can receive calls on your LG through your GV number.

When you install sipdroid and set it up, it will configure a pbxes.org trunk for you based on your gmail account, so it is important that the GV number you intend to use is associated with that gmail account. You will get a confirmation email from pbxes.org confiriming your account has been set up.

Within a week you will need to go into pbxes.org and add some info on the personal data form, otherwise they will delete your account.

I thought sipdroid was a total nightmare to configure. When I did get it to work, it sounded terrible anyway. I would suggest Net Talk or Viber.

Many thanks! Had access to WI FI today in New Orleans for about 3 hours. OMG! I LOVE this phone!

Will get busy with your suggestions this weekend. I REALLY appreciate all of the feedback-

I just printed this out.... going to do half of the stuff on my home computer, then the rest on my OV this weekend. THANKS, baby! :)
