Root Suddenly Stuck in Boot Loop Over a Month After Rooting

Hi all,

Back in June I got the Evo V 4G (on VM) and rooted it using the "Complete Newbie's Guide" in this forum. I loved it, so my boyfriend got one in July as well and I rooted it for him using the same methods, same recovery, kernel, rom, etc. My phone is still working great, but yesterday his phone was running slow, so he restarted it, and that is when it suddenly became stuck in a boot loop.

It can't get past the white HTC boot screen. We can get it into hboot, but trying to enter recovery just results in the same boot loop. We tried to enter recovery using Terminal (we're both on Macs). We tried reinstalling recovery.img. We tried clearing the cache via Terminal. We even tried the factory reset from hboot. Absolutely nothing has worked.

I've read a couple of threads on here, and elsewhere, about getting out of boot loop, but they tend to suggest the same things we've tried. Also, this was pretty sudden, with the phone working fine for over a month after rooting it. The only difference between our phones seems to be that mine is Sprint branded, and his is VM branded (if that matters at all).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Depending which Rom it was that it boot looped on the fix may be different other then that the easiest way would be to rum the RUU

He got his hands on a computer running windows 7 and has been trying to run the RUU. No luck with the exe, so tried the zip method, and got this error:

""Unknown Error" Please get the correct ROM Update Utility and try again"

The ROM used in July was JmzStock_VM_Shooter_Odex, from the newbies guide (and which works great, still, on my phone).

S-ON or S-OFF? Try wiping all the Partitions except SD Card in recovery then Flash another Rom (i recommend Mobster Rom V) if your S-ON you'll want to enable "Smart Flash" in 4Ext Recovery

After during 'oem lock' back on to the RELOCKED state, the RUU update (same version # as installed) finished successfully. However upon reboot same white HTC logo cycle, even when selecting the recovery hboot option.

That's weird because running the ruu should write back the stock hboot and recovery..

I'm having the same problem has anyone found a solution yet? If anyone could tell me what ruu to use that would be nice I'm running the HTC evo v 4g from virgin mobile.
