Has anyone taken advantage of this option in settings? In other words, have you successfully kep root after updating firmware by selecting this? I hope that when 4.04 comes around (official) that ticking this option may keep me rooted?

Would a recovery using a nandroid back up also get root back?

Restoring a nandroid backup will return the handset to the exact configuration it was in when the backup was made, so if it was rooted before it will remain so afterwards.
