Supported video formats

It seems that the Atrix doesn't support all the same video formats as did the Captivate. I have mp4 files created in Handbrake that no longer work.

I found a new video player in the market that plays them and also supports .mpg files as well. That really excites me as I have a large collection of MPEG2 files.

It's called Vital Player. If you have video files that won't play, check it out.

If you have any .mkv video files handy, would you mind trying them out? I just ordered my Atrix online on Costco and it should come sometime soon.

I'm not completely sure as it's what my friend who has the Captivate told me, but he said 720p .mkv files also stutter on his phone.

One thing that is being left out is the actual codec used for the videos in question. MKV and MP4 are just containers. What we really need to know is what codec was used for the audio and video streams. Most PC players will be able to give this info through some sort of file properties menu option.

I don't have any mkv files so I can't test. But, did you use the Vital Player I mentioned? If so, did you try both Software and Hardware decoding options?

I've got 1080i .mpg files that I converted into 720p .mp4 (.h264) files using Handbrake. They don't play with with the Auto decode setting but play perfectly with Hardware decoding.

Really just need the codecs. I'm only interested in files that I can get to play over the HDMI interface too. I want to be able to watch movies on the phone when I am on a plane or connected to the TV in hotel rooms.

720p files (including MKVs) play perfectly on my Galaxy S, the Captivate issues are probably related to the age of the firmware (unofficial firmwares are up to 2.2.1, which is what mine is on). It uses hardware acceleration, which is a considerable advantage over handsets that don't. I would expect the Atrix with wide-codec players like Rockplayer to perform well on essentially everything besides HD video, even though its only using CPU decoding.
