Swiftkey now free

After using SwiftKey again for almost a week, I have decide to stay with it. I'm certainly not making the same amount of keying errors as I did over a year ago and that is with the same layout. Maybe I'm just better at using touch screen keyboards now than a year ago when I decided to switch to Kii.

I do find that I am typing better than with Kii. SwiftKey's better auto-correct and text prediction enables me to type better and more accurately than Kii now. SwiftKey's predictions are also context sensitive. It is able to determine whether I want "well" or "we'll" based on what part of the sentence I am typing. This is particularly important when using gesture typing where it is normally not so convenient to type punctuation.

About a year ago when I switched from SwiftKey to Kii, my issue with SwiftKey was that I kept making certain keying errors. I kept hitting the space bar by accident when typing a letter in the bottom row. I also kept hitting the shift key when wanting to type the letter A. For whatever reason, I found that I wasn't constantly doing that anymore this time around.

Another thing I didn't like about SwiftKey before what that when using Flow, it would predict the next word after finishing a word. I didn't figure out back then that I could just press backspace to see other possible predictions of the word I just typed. Kii and Swype didn't do that. I wanted SwiftKey to behave the same. Since one of SwiftKey's greatest strengths is word prediction, it naturally defaulted to predict the next word. Now that I figured out the backspace, this is no longer a concern.

SwiftKey still seems to lag a bit compared to Kii. Kii is just smoother and faster when typing. Also, SwiftKey is slower when switching between portrait and landscape. There is a delay of a couple of seconds before the keyboard for the new orientation is redrawn. Kii switches orientations noticeably faster. So far, I this lag is tolerable. I usually switch the orienation to landscape before I start typing. I normally switch to landscape and then tap on the text entry area of the screen which then brings up the keyboard. It is rare that I would start typing and then switch orientations. I usually notice this lag after I finish typing. I would tap on the send/post button and then switch orientations back to portrait when the keyboard is still on the screen. When it switches to portrait, it takes a couple of seconds to redraw the keyboard. I normally dismiss the keyboard then since I am no longer typing.

Over the past year, I did try out SwiftKey a few times after some updates. I never liked it then. For whatever reason I like it now even though the keyboard layout hasn't changed. Go figure.

Interesting move by them, I guess they weren't making as much on sales

I'm thinking this is a move on their part to be ready to offer the keyboard for IOS8. Don't think the iPhone people are as likely to fork over money for a keyboard as they will for themes after the free keyboard hooks them.

I'm looking forward to being able to use SwiftKey on my iPhone. After using the many different third party keyboards, I find the iPhone keyboard to lack a lot of functionality that I'm used to on Android keyboards.

So true I know my work phone is an iPhone and I really want that ability so that I can have the same keyboards across my devices.

However, I left Swiftkey a little while ago for Swype, after they got their battery issue under control. :)

For me, it's not necessarily about the same keyboard, although it is a bonus that I can sync my dictionary and typing style across devices. There are a number of features in SwiftKey and other third party keyboards that I used (Kii and Swype) that I really miss when using the standard iOS keyboard:
Long press a key to type punctuation or numbers.
  • Label on keys change to upper when typing in caps.
  • Gesture typing. I use this method to type when using the phone with only one hand.
  • Cursor keys.
  • Choice of different layouts and keyboard sizes (like on iPads).
However, I left Swiftkey a little while ago for Swype, after they got their battery issue under control. :)

I have lag issues with Swype on my phone. The lag is pretty bad in landscape which is how I normally type. Also, the layout I like on Swype is one designed for tablets. I like where the keys are, but because it was designed for a tablet, it is hard to see the symbols on the keys because they are so small.

I'd go for clearing it's cache/data via settings/apps, then force stop. If that doesn't do it, an uninstall/reinstall should fix it.

Yeah I went ahead and did the uninstall/reinstall thing and it's working now. I thought that might be the reason my battery usage has increased about 10% in the last week or so but that doesn't seem to be it.

It's still increased after you did the uninstall and reinstall? Check for wake locks then.

I wouldn't call it "lag" because it's only with the very first message, but the new versions does seem to have to "load" when I first open up any dialog box to message. Anyone else get this? It never happened before to me!

Every since it went free, it has become slow and laggy. It crashes often as well. Swiftkey is aware of all the issues and said they are working to fix all of the issues in their last blog. I hope it is soon. It has gotten so bad, I can't use it right now.

Love it, I was using Swype for ages, but swype still doesn't include emoji, Swift does and generally seems to be better overall in prediction and general flow.

I've noticed the lag with the latest version too, got so annoying that I went back to a previous version and it zips right along again! The only down side is that you can't use the new skins!

I was on the beta anyway but I think it was smart of them to make it free with premium themes.
I bought four.
(dont buy a "retro" one, it's not as cool as you may think)
I like the minimal ones :)

Only lag I get is with the backspace key, end up tapping too much and wiping half a sentence lol
Only had two FCs btw n I blamed the rom and ART...

So is the lack of not being able to turn off auto correct just another trouble issue?

Let's see if I can explain this correctly, lol. When I am finished "swiping" the last word in my sentence, it lags a bit getting back to the "original" 3 prediction boxes that are always present, and I can't start typing again until it does. Maybe I'm just a "speed freak" but that one or two second "hesitation" really started to get on my nerves!

It's a little laggy at times compared to Kii, but not so much that it bothers me. I find it take a little while when changing orientations which I do quite often.

I
I don't know because I always use auto correct........

Sorry senior I don't swipe

Hey nice find. I've been looking for another keyboard as an alternative to the Google one. Seems to work very well with prediction. Doesn't do Chinese though, but I use Google pinyin for that.
