correct me if im wrong, but if nothing is wrong with my phone, can i go buy a thunderbolt at retail and activate it without any charge? i have a 3g phone now, so will i need to upgrade or something cause the thunderbolt is 4g?

To my knowledge, no. All u need to do is change ur plan to include 4g. I think
 
All you have to do is transfer your stuff from your old phone to your new one. To my knowledge there is no need to "add" 4G to your plan. The Thunderbolt will simply run like any 3G phone.

Correct any 4g device can also use the 3g data plan. Honestly I dont need any faster than 3g.
