Root Switching ROMs Optimus V

I am currently using IHO BS 20120502 with most of my apps linked via Link2SD. I have heard that since this version doesn't support the headset mic, that there are other ROMs like MiRage that do support it. I really only need it for my Square card reader, but it would be nice to use that.
I have never changed a ROM away from IHO BS, so I am nervous. What would the proper steps be to install a different ROM? What will happen to all of the apps that I have installed via Link2SD? Any direction would be appreciated.

Open up the backside updater and flash the build before the one your on. Headset should work.

Now that I've done that, my Link2SD partition is not being recognized and I have tried multiple times to link but I get the error message mount: mounting /dev/block/vold/179:2 on /data/sdext2 failed: Invalid argument
Update: I had to select FAT32 and Link2SD was able to recreate the mount script.
BTW, the previous version does not allow the Square device to work properly.

Benslgdroid has a guide for relinking after a new flash. I believe it is in the All Things Root sticky.
