Swype avail for Eris

Been thinking about intalling Swype for three weeks now. Downloaded it last night, did the tutorial and I am off an running. This is awesome. I can text 10 times faster than before. I few small tricks to learn, but overall I love it. Thanks. Would have never known about it without hanging out in this forum.

u do any tweaking? i feel like it's not as fast. even if i try to speed type i feel like there is more mistakes. did you do anything in the settings for it?

Well now I have the updated version and it seems to be saving me words as of now unlike the beta leaked version.

I do have 1 question though, has anyone been able to get swype working with Phonemypc?

if you were already a fast typer, then u wont notice too much of a difference. swype is great if you are a 1 handed typer cuz now you should have the speeds of a 2 handed typer. me personally i am a lil faster now than i was before with 2 hands but its just so much cooler now ;)

I'm a fairly fast touch-screen typist, and with the default keyboard I'd sometimes find myself having to pause for a second or so, so that the Eris could catch up. That's not a problem with Swype ... so all in all, I'm noticeably faster.

There's definitely a learning curve with Swype, though ... it makes your brain work a little differently than a standard keyboard. So you need to practice, but the results are worth it.

Just use it as a regular keyboard or switch back to the stock keyboard. There is an option to turn off word prediction while typing.

Swype requires a complete change in thought processes to use it to its potential. It's algorithms don't require you to be precise in your finger placement, though it is helpful to start on the right letter. If you have a good grasp on key placement then the best way is to not think too much about it. Start on the letter then slide around, and the word predictor is fairly accurate. It got easier for me once I stopped thinking that I *HAVE* to hit each key, when in reality you just need to get *NEAR* each letter. I'm actually using SlideIT because I'd paid for it before Swype got swiped for our phone, but it works on exactly the same principle. It took me about a week, maybe a little less, to become proficient on the sliding keyboard, but now I rarely get wrong words, and if I do, it's usually because I started in the wrong place. I have found it has a harder time with shorter common words than longer words, but that could easily be operator error! The only time I go back to stock keyboard is when I'm entering in passwords, because it takes me less time to switch boards and enter in the password than to hunt and peck on the slider and switch to numbers, etc.

Install must have failed, I did the long pres and it didnt offfer me that option only paste or insert quick text
:(

my bad Evil Sports....When I added the latest update to the first post, I removed the instructions on how to run it. I have re-added them so this won't happen in the future.

Its all good:D 1 thing though, getting used to this app will screw with you in the future. You will lose your ability to work a conventional touch screen after a while and have to learn it all over again.

So you're saying you're not a Android for life person? OFF WITH YOUR HEAD!!!!!!

;)

Funny Dude:D:D:D but Im just thinking about the future and how long it took me to be proficient:o with the touch screen in this device. The app is one of the coolest things I have seen for our phone though

Alright, so I had swype, it was working great. I turned off when i was out drinking for my own sanity sake, and now i try and click it back on and it's not working..tried reseting the phone :-(.

And by "clicking it on", do you mean press and hold in a text area and select input method>select swype?

If so, maybe you should go into the app and uninstall it, reboot, and then re-install it.

Er...I knew that...i was just um making sure you where all on your game....

*slowly slinks into the shadows*

(got it..)

I'd uninstall then reinstall. No reboot is required.

Is Swype even an option when you go Home > Menu > Settings > Locale & Text > ?

Or is it gone? Did you uncheck the check box, or did you just Long-press in a text box, then hit Select input method > Touch Input?

Today was the first day I had a text conversation in swype for 20+ mins. For the most part it's great (I was soo slow on the stock kb) but it is always choosing the wrong word. Even when I slowly go over each letter, it chooses a different word by default.

Now I know it needs to learn and get used to what words I use often, so what I'm really trying to say is when the pop up bubble is displayed and I choose which word I mean, in a quick conversation I have a hard time actually touching the right word.

Now I have the word "Utah" automatically popping up because I accidentally chose it several times while trying to hit "Yeah." lol :( Is there a trick to this? Am I just touchscreen-challenged?

I saw a video on SlideIt and I really like how the choice of words is in a row instead of a pop up bubble. It seems like that would be easier to select the word and doesnt take up as much screen real estate (frequently my friend would send me a text and it was hidden behind the pop up word select bubble). Is SlideIt just as good as Swype? If so I may just switch over for the easy word select row.

The vertical list in Swype was touchy. I found it to be challenging to be sure I hit it correctly ( which is why the ends of the words have different angles) You have to "nick" it with your fingernail. Or if it happens to be the first one, the spacebar works. SlideIT is just as good as Swype, and in some cases better. The horizontal word select bar is easier to use IMHO, but it too has a learning curve. At first I hated it because I could never get it to change the word to the correct one. But with practice it gets easier.

There is a SlideIT lite if you just want to try it. After a couple of days it nags you to buy. The work pretty much the same.
