Help Sync phone contacts BACK to google account

still having problems with this.
in the same respect as the other guys when i re import too google my numbers automatically go into US xxxx-xxxx-xxx format even though previous to that they would be in normal format

Make sure your phone numbers start +44 rather than 0 that way they should stay in the English format. But I've yet to discover a way to stop the land line ones from changing..

Not too sure how this google contact sync works and it reminds me nothing good such as itune synch where settings can be very counter intuitive to work with.

Anyway, I tried coz I'm stubborn and I thought I got my phone contact wipped away... and they seem to be but actually, they are wiped away from my PHONE, but appear in the "All contacts" tab of google contacts!

Anyhow, as far as I can understand, only the contacts that are in other groups than "All contacts" are transfered to the phone.

So, great news: after synchronizing the phone for the first time, all your PHONE contacts will be in the "All contacts" group online. So then you need to move them to the "My Contacts" group one by one and then re-synchronize.

I advise you to BACK UP your contacts on your SD card before you start playing around with this stuff. Google still have a lot of work to make our life easy for that super useful feature.

Good luck, A

Honestly, google have it pretty much sorted right now. The only issue is people not realising these are stored on the cloud.

Its not even really syncing your contacts, a better way to think of it is your contacts are not on your phone, but are just in the cloud. Nothing is synced, you just grab a contact from the cloud when you need it.

Ok, so thats not really what happens, but the sync is basically instant so it sorta feels better to think of it that way.

I have been reading through the above thread which has been very helpful. All I want to do is back up all my contacts to gmail in case I lose my ph. I have converted all my contacts to google contacts and synced with gmail - however only the ph numbers have been synced & not any email addresses. Any ideas anyone?

cheers

If all you want is a backup of your contacts then take a look at MyPhoneExplorer which will do this and more. It is free so you have nothing to lose.

I had the same problem, easily solved with a few quick steps.

1. Open People, Menu, Import/Export, Export to SD Card
2. Import/Export, Import to Google
3. Menu View - Select only the Google Account so you don't see duplicates (I choose to leave the contacts on my phone as a backup)
4. Home Screen, Menu. Settings, Accounts and Sync, Tap on Google and make sure Sync Contacts is ticked. Tap Sync now to sync straight away - although my phone already detected the new contacts and was already syncing.
5. Check you google account and volla, your contacts are now in sync.

I love my phone, but it should come with a warning, only for the tech savvy amongst you!!!

Hope that helps

This works and if you delete ALL contacts from your GMail account in the cloud first you will end up with identical contacts on your phone and on Gmail. After sync I found the GMail contacts were in US format but BRILLIANTLY the phone contacts were in ORIGINAL UK FORMAT - even though the original contacts I exported to SD card seemed to be in mixed UK and US format in a random way.
Looks like Google know what they're doing - even if it takes some work to get it ALL SORTED.
