Help Syncing Gmail Contacts

My contact list was a mess. When i got my new Infuse my contact list was pulled over from old iphone. I managed to import my Yahoo contacts into my new Gmail account and I "tested" the syncing which did successfully update my Infuse contacts to be in sync with my Gmail contacts. I then went back to Gmail to do some major clean up. But now, I can NOT get the Infuse and Gmail to sync up again. I keep going to Settings, Accounts and sync, Gmail, then Sync Contacts. It looks like it's syncing but when you go back to contacts it's all still the same. I had deleted and merger ALOT in my Gmail contacts. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong????

Geez, i figured it out. it was syncing, but the contacts on the phone were not being removed, just the contacts from Gmail were being added/updated. so i still need to clean up whats on the phone itself. Thanks. I know i'm not the most knowledgeable tech person, but i'm not the dullest crayon in the box either. Androids are difficult.

The initial set up can be a pita....especially when importing contacts. the contacts that remained were most likely imported as "phone" contacts rather than gmail contacts....thus they do not sync.
