Help System data, growing out of control

Hello there, I just migrated from a more or less broken Desire to the Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100G). After a week or so I am running into trouble, and I haven't even rooted yet :)

Using the app DiskUsage, I see that the folder System data is growing all the time. It is about 40 MB upon factory reset, then after a few hours it grows with a couple of megabytes pr. hour. After a few days, it was more then 1GB! I have almost no apps installed, and I am not able to pin this on one specific app.

After browsing a lot, some people have similar trouble due to the file anr_history.txt growing continiously and) logging non responsive apps.

Anyone got any remedy for this, any suspected apps (I think all I have installed now is facebook...) or any thoughts?
 
A bit like talking to myself... it seems (so far, but not thoroughly tested), that the internal memory only fills up with garbage when the WiFi is on... Hope someone else could keep an eye on their internal memory, and see if they have the same problem.:confused:
 
I have a very similar problem to yours. You are right in that the internal memory only fills when the WiFi is turned on. Have you found a solution to this problem?

That's only treating the symptoms though, not curing the illness. You need to find what file is growing & then what's causing it.

Does DiskUsage go to file level? If not, this app looks like it does:

If you can figure out what file(s) are growing at that rate we might be able to figure out what's causing it.

ETA: here's my /system from the StorageAnalyser app. It's a sim free phone running GB.

I uninstalled and factory reset my phone in the past couple of hours but the problem still persists. Looks like everytime I switch OFF WiFi, my internal memory increases by 3-4 MB. That eventually grew to 1.4 GB and caused huge memory problems. Will try your softwares now. Thanks for the replies!
 
Quick Update - Tried the Storage Analyser but turns out that the /system folder is not what is causing the change in system data. I would think it is one of the folders amongst /sys and /proc. Read in one of the forums that this might be because of wifi error logs being generated but unable to act on the suggestions there because I don't have super user rights.
 
I have the same problem with a GT-I9100G running 2.3.6 OS. After a couple of months of use I had to factory reset it to free the device memory. On April 24th it showed 50 MB in System data with 83 MB of installed apps. Since then I 've installed the rest of my apps reaching 250 MB, but the System data has grown up to 815 MB and it points to in several weeks I will have to factory reset again.
In the meantime I 've found that the causing files must be in one out of these directories: \sys \proc. Using of Astro (file management tool) to count the size of these directories is impossible since app hungs up. Trying Store Analyser is neither possible since it requires super user rights to access the system partition. So it lead us to the point of rooting the phone with the consequent risk associated.
Has anybody else been through this situation and found a solution?. In case I achieve to move forward will share with you.
 
I'm having exactly the same problem. However, the storage anaylzer and other apps require root access to carry out the operations.

1) Is there a way where the problem can be fixed for un-rooted devices. I do not want to root and void my warranty.

2) Is the option of removing the execute permission from /system/bin/dumpstate applicable to devices where Root is not accessible?

I have GT-I9100G running 2.3.6 OS build XWLC2

I am facing the same issue on my S2 & I don't want to root my device. So is there any option to delete unwanted system data without rooting the device.

Apart from frequent resets. :confused:
 
We can access the files from system folder by using pull commands in ADB.

adb pull /proc /desktop/testing_android_proc

Also I tried accessing system files on 2 Galaxy S2 devices of 3 folders: System, sys & Proc.

1 of the device is having this internal memory issue & 1 does not have.

Surprisingly for all three folders: Size is same on both the device. So I can assume here, The problem lies in some other folder.

I have the same problem.. Any solutions? Only solution is to move to ICS where is problem is not there.
Seems we have to change permission on dumbstate file so that its not generated. How to do that on unrooted phone is a million $ question..Has anyone tried to contact Samsung Customer care for same..

i cant just do a factory reset every couple weeks!!
 
You don't have to root your phones to fix this problem. Just dial *#9900# on the phone and then select from menu - delete dumpstate/logcat. I tested this solution on my SGS2 and it works.

The code *#9900# doesn't do anything on my phone.

Is there another way to clean out the System Data files?
I suspect they are error logs because the chunk got HUGE after Foursquare had encountered some errors.

I've done factory reset a month before because the System Data got so enormous, I was getting a notification constantly and had been uninstalling apps but it was getting bigger and bigger, even after reboots. I can't allow myself factory resets every month. I think none of us folks here find that appealing...

No, I'm using the original android dialer.
However my phone is not branded (?) - a Chinese knock-off of Galaxy note

Anyway, I've figured out a way to fix this.
System data was occupying all app space. I used FX file browser with root add-on to clean the error logs and dalvik cache and I'm good to go!

Hope that helps others
(Can't believe how stupid this issue is that Android doesn't clean itself of these error logs ,in my case they were caused by non-responding foursquare and were taking up around 700MB and increasing!)
