Just went to HTC Software Update and found this available. Anyone know what's in it???


Hit Menu, then Settings, then About Phone, then System Updates, then HTC Software Update, and finally hit Check Now.
 
Funny tho, my phone actually told me about the update.
If you go to settings/about phone/system update/htc updates you will find the update.
 
Just downloaded it to my wife's Hero. I don't know what it is for as of yet. I know my Evo had the same update when I got it this morning.

Yeah...took only a couple of minutes to download (WiFi) and install. So far, I don't see any changes in features, operation or functionality.....???

Oh well...I guess I will just follow this Thread to see what any of the experts discover.
 
I think the update that came out for the EVO was to fix the SD card issue...and it might also break the root exploit. I'm not sure if this update is related or not.

The old CARROT & STICK technique... bottom line is read the fine print, BUYER BEWARE, Caution - GREEKS BEARING GIFTS, lol, etc., etc., etc.

I recommend NEVER rushing to update your phone when one is out, at least until a few days later or official word is out as to the purpose of the update. But yes, word is, it closes the ROOT method for 2.1

Understand this... the EVO comes with capability that Sprint is looking to profit off of and increase revenue. The ROOT process grants access to some of those features and bypasses their revenue stream. They will be very aggressive in patching future exploits of the phone, of this you can be sure. As such... these Hero's WITH Root capability, might just hold their value for a very long time ;) hehehehe...

I think by them at least getting all devices to the same os version it easier for them to keep track of rooting and be able to patch quickly.
 
So, has anyone determined what this update is for? I have read it thwarts the rooting of the Sprint HTC Hero's Android 2.1 update, but is that it?

Does it contain any useful fixes or enhancements to Android 2.1? I always like to be well informed before I install any type of update, especially to something as integral to my daily life as my smartphone.
 
Can anyone determine yet if the upgrade's purpose was to fix something or just patch the rooting exploit?
Did it patch the exploit or merely uin-root it, thus allowing rooting again?

Just curious. I can't find any explaination, or the upgrade, on HTC's site.
 
When I tried this the first time it told me my HTC software is up to date. Because I didn't like that answer, I tried it again & it asked me if I wanted to download the update via the network or wifi. I'm uploading now but considering what I'm reading in this thread, I'm not really sure why!
 
Looks like the update's purpose on the Hero was to fix a "security hole". Happens to be the "Security hole" that allowed root access on the EVO and the 2.1 RUU on the Hero
 
I just got off the phone with Advanced Technical Support at Sprint. I have been working with them for about 2 months on issues with my HERO and their AIRAVE service. I thought this was going to address at least the "known" issue they are aware of which the phone not switching from roaming/airave to Sprint and back correctly.

The ONLY thing this patch addresses is the elimination of the root exploit. This was a SPRINT directed patch and not a HTC one per the Sprint rep and confirmed by two supervisors for what its worth.
 
im not updating, gonna root in a few days but just want to see if there are any issues that pop up later just in case :D
 
It is ironic how they can fire off a patch to kill the root exploit, but they have not given us a patch or even a timeline for when we will get a patch that fixes all the issues with the Android 2.1 update. Nice job, Sprint.

So, I guess I should just ignore the update then? I do not plan on rooting my Sprint HTC Hero at the moment anyway.
 
I'm still on 1.5 so I'm curious if I got the "update" too and if it would have the same effect, but I'm not checking because I might want to root eventually
 
Well, after reading this thead, i decided not to update my phone for a while... I actually wanna br able to root my phone.

Just so everyone knows. If you inadvertently update your phone with today's OTA update and lose the latest root exploit, there is a way back.

Just run the ORIGINAL .5 RUU that came out last month and then you will be able to root using yesterday's exploit.

This works for now, but beware of any future update/RUU from Sprint.
