System Update 2.27.651.6 (3.17MB) FOTA Available

Just so everyone knows. If you inadvertently update your phone with today's OTA update and lose the latest root exploit, there is a way back.

Just run the ORIGINAL .5 RUU that came out last month and then you will be able to root using yesterday's exploit.

This works for now, but beware of any future update/RUU from Sprint.

anyone have this file they can upload? sprint has the new one on the site and I deleted it from my computer. the good news is I have not updated, and turned off auto update just now. but it would be nice to have the file when I need it

I got Sprint Nav back with the update, like I wanted it, and my phone is much less laggy, I think the update is a major improvement over the way it was before, keyboard seems better too, still not what it should be but better.

supposedly the only thing the update does is take away your ability to root, so if you want to be able to root your phone then don't install the update

I have the update and no way is that all it did to my phone, it is much faster and the dialer works better for me. It has been said before, not all of us give a rat fart about being able to root, not why I bought the phone. Can I do it yes, I am a Tier 3 support tech have been a very long time, I don't want to root it! Why is it that every thread on here someone has to talk about rooting, go talk about it in the rooting threads!

Easy little goat! Obviously you VISIT this forum quite a bit for you to know ALOT about rooting and where it is located, next time maybe skim the last 2 pages and you would also discover that this has been talked about. That is probably why V425 was posting, just for informational purposes only. The way you posted initially, it would have appeared to some people that you were NOT too familiar with this forum! Im just sayin'.......

Hey gang, I am new here. I have not experienced some of the 2.1 problems mentioned by others with two exceptions: My Hero always had the dialing lag (before 2.1) and still did after the 2.1 update. Also, my phone would indicate I had 1 unviewed text messages when in fact I had viewed them all.

In the case of my Hero, todays update has made a very notable improvement in the dialing lag. I am reluctant to call it completely solved until I use the phone more, but the lag appears greatly improved. Maybe I don't need to rush out and buy an EVO quite yet...

PS. Someone mentioned earlier that not much could have been fixed with a 3mb update. I don't agree. And whats to says Sprint is telling us everything they fixed with today's update...I highly doubt Microsoft is always open and truthful about what is included in their updates...

I applied the Sprint Android 2.1 update a couple weeks ago when it first came out and my HTC Hero became sluggish. I had to reboot it and remove the battery and then it snapped to. It then worked normally -- or as you would expect except for the sluggish dialing and bluetooth issue.

I applied the new OTA update this morning, rebooted (and removed the battery when I did it just to be sure) and now everything seems to be working flawlessly. No more dialing delay. Bluetooth worked flawlessly in my car. All is good!

I don't know if the update is supposed to fix these issues, but for me, these issues miraculously got fixed. I'm pretty finicky and had contemplated tossing out the Hero in favor of the Evo or something else--so I'm pretty stoked that its working great again.

Just my .02 cents.

I said that it was not likely to fix a whole bunch of things on our Sprint HTC Hero handsets because the evidence so far has indicated that. I am pretty sure Sprint would want to publicize the issues it has addressed in the OTA update considering all the negative feedback it has gotten out of the Android 2.1 update since it has been released. :)

If the OTA update is addressing some of the issues as a side effect of its main purpose, which was to patch the root exploit, then that is just a bonus. You will not see me complaining about any fixes to the current hot topic issues that are being talked about in these threads. ;)

Good to know. I was doubting everyone saying all it did was to fix some rooting workaround. I mean really? I just downloaded it so I'll give it a few days to see if I notice any difference myself. I'm hoping things don't seem faster cause everyone had to reboot.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm skeptical about. Keep us up on how it's working for you, ok? Everyone else too.

Does the option in the Menu/ Settings/ About Phone/ System Updates/ HTC Software Update only appear when there is an update available?

I only ask as I remember seeing this on my Hero when I first bought it, but I have since lost this option in the phone settings.

I had my Hero updated to 2.1 at a Sprint store about a week or so ago; after that I noticed more issues...ring lag time, internet links not working, message saying I had unread when I didn't phone not ringing, etc.

I went to the Sprint store yesterday to have them redo the 2.1 update; after that I noticed this software update and updated it (didn't know what it was); then my phone had no internet connection or anything requiring location info. I thought the 2.1 redo had completely screwed things up. Then I powered down the phone and removed the battery, put battery back in, powered up (had to reload software update again) and it's working fabulously now.

I noticed the lag in ring is better, I have to relink to my BT in my car, so I'm not sure about that, and I'm not seeing as much lag. Overall, I'm pretty happy; I'll stay happy if my BT stays connected to SYNC in my car :)

Seems many take issue with Sprint having said nothing, yes I agree that is odd but the OTA put Sprint Nav back (now I have to dump it again) they did not even mention that, so they have not said it is a security update, or anything else for that matter. The lack of an announcement is odd, but the results are pretty obvious to those that have installed the OTA, 2.1 should have NOT been released without it. It's could be improved, but it is better.

Has anyone tried typing on their landscape keyboard after updating? I just tried and it seems faster/better than before. tell me what you think

I have been following this thread. I have NOT done the 2.1-.6 OTA update because I really haven't had to many issues as described and my phone has been working fine. No dialer lag, no calling out lag just my keyboard did have lag in landscape mode though.

Just in the past few days I have noticed considerably less lag in my keyboard in landscape mode and I did nothing to my phone at all. It was about the same time people on here started to see an improvement after their OTA update. Weird coincidence!?

Well, it was faster in my Facebook application (for whatever reason), but when I try and type an email in the mail app, or a text message, it is just as bad :'(

The old CARROT & STICK technique... bottom line is read the fine print, BUYER BEWARE, Caution - GREEKS BEARING GIFTS, lol, etc., etc., etc.

I recommend NEVER rushing to update your phone when one is out, at least until a few days later or official word is out as to the purpose of the update. But yes, word is, it closes the ROOT method for 2.1

Understand this... the EVO comes with capability that Sprint is looking to profit off of and increase revenue. The ROOT process grants access to some of those features and bypasses their revenue stream. They will be very aggressive in patching future exploits of the phone, of this you can be sure. As such... these Hero's WITH Root capability, might just hold their value for a very long time ;) hehehehe...

Regards!

Thanks for advice and info. I've cancelled the upgrade and will research upgrades from now on before installing.

I still have not done the update yet either. From what I am reading it might be beneficial for some speed increases.

I do not plan on rooting my phone for a while so I am not worried about the update ruining my chances for that. Besides, I have read you can go back to the previous installation and then still root from there.

You are correct, there are speed and battery benefits. I was going to root mine, but after these updates, I have absolutely no need. My phone works beautifully.

What exactly have you experienced in terms of speed increases and better battery life since the OTA update? I know some people have said that the keyboard and dialer lag is better. But, this is the first time I heard battery life has improved.

I would love to see a detailed list of what precise speed and battery benefits you have witnessed since you updated. I probably will go ahead and update soon anyway.

animated weather, and if you download the 2.1 update now and run it again, it is included. I tried it just for grins.

That has been there since the 2.1 update, has nothing to do with the .6 update, it was there on the .5
