Root T-mobile; no operating system

Newbie
Hi guys,

I have no idea how you guys are able to help other people on these forums day after day, it's pretty impressive. I hope to receive some of this help as well. I did some searching and read The HTC One M8 thread from Scotty and wasn't able to complete the guide.

Problem: I own an HTC One M8 on T-Mobile, accidentally formatted my rooted device. My phone boots to a white screen with green text displaying "HTC". I can turn the phone off, but it'll boot back up in a few seconds (essentially not possible to leave the device off and the screen will remain on until the battery drains itself out.)

I did not, quite unfortunately, make a Nandroid backup (fairly new to Android and discovered that in my research in search of a solution to this problem). Is there any other information that I can provide that would help find a fix for this issue?

I really appreciate the help. Thanks!

Additional information: I'd like to give Cyanogenmod a try. I would like to try this non-stock operating system out. But reverting to stock is fine too - anything to be able to actually use my phone again. Thank you so much.

Yep, I did download the installer at Cyangeonmod's website, but according to the guides that I've read, you should be able to actually boot the phone prior to attempting to install that ROM.

Let's start with the basics.

Did you install TWRP, can you boot to your bootloader and get to TWRP from there?

If you can boot to your bootloader, please provide the information listed there.

If you can get that far, almost a certainty that your phone can be recovered.

Btw - hold volume down while powering up to get to hboot (the bootloader).

If that doesn't work, while on, hold volume up and power until the phone resets. As soon as it goes off, hold volume down while it powers itself back up.

This worked perfectly. I see the white screen that declares that it is a tampered and unlocked device along with the options of FASTBOOT, RECOVERY, FACTORYRESET, SIMLOCK, and what not. TWRP is installed as well, yes.

Ok, great!

I'm posting from my phone, so I can't refer to my hboot, bear with me.

On your hboot screen, does it say s-off?

And there is a firmware or baseband number (not the DSP) one - we'll need that. (If not at the top of the hboot screen, choose FASTBOOT by scrolling with the volume keys, and just a little tap on the power button to select it.)

I take it that you installed adb and fastboot as part of your rooting on your pc - let me know if not, I'll have you install our Mini-SDK.

I take it that you don't have a rom downloaded already - correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's what we're going to do -

- match a rom to your firmware version and get it on your pc

- push it to your phone using adb

- install it

- attempt to boot

- if failure, install the boot.img using fastboot on your pc

- boot up

- go back to TWRP and make you a nandroid backup

- boot up

- profit!

OK, I have to hit the road for a little bit, so I'm going to pre-load you with instructions for while I'm out of touch.

On your hboot screen (I just checked mine lol) you'll see hboot, radio and OS numbers. If you have an OS number and it begins with 1.5, I want you to get ViperOneM8 version 1.7.1 - if the OS is 2.22 or later, get the latest version.

http://venomroms.com/htc-one-m8

Put it in the same folder as your adb on your pc.

Get into TWRP by going to RECOVERY from your hboot.

Mount button - make sure that /data is selected.

Connect phone to pc.

Open command window where adb and rom zip file are, and in the command window -

adb push NAME-OF-YOUR-ROM.ZIP /sdcard/NAME-OF-YOUR-ROM.ZIP

And please, use the actual name of the ViperOneM8 zip file and not literally "NAME-OF-YOUR-ROM.ZIP" like others have at that point lol. ;)

In TWRP, Install button - select internal storage, choose the ViperOneM8 rom zip file, and follow the instructions that occur with the Aroma installer wizard.

Select for T-Mobile when presented.

Select to wipe when presented.

Don't worry about any fancy tricks that the wizard offers like leaving out or adding features or apps - just do a normal, full install.

Boot up. It takes a little while on the first boot. Don't panic. Give it 10 or 15 minutes if needed but no longer.

~~~~~~~
If failure, get back to hboot. While connected to your pc it ought to say FASTBOOT USB.
On PC, unzip the ViperOneM8 rom zip file and extract the boot.img file to the same place that you have adb and fastboot. In your command window, say -
fastboot flash boot boot.img
Boot up.
Do the minimum to get your setup done.
Long press the power button. Choose to reboot, then recovery to get to TWRP.
Backup - choose the default to get boot, system and data - that's a nandroid backup.
Explore ViperOneM8.
You can customize it so many ways that you won't believe it if you're not familiar with Viper.
If everything is working, decide if you want to stick with Viper or look for an alternative.
Hope this helps. I have to leave in about 20 minutes and I'll have time to check in very briefly about an hour after that and then more an hour after that.
It says S-on. Here's the rest of it:
Is this information what you were looking for?
I take it that you installed adb and fastboot as part of your rooting on your pc - let me know if not, I'll have you install our Mini-SDK.
ADB I remember, fastboot I don't - though I want to say that it remains a possibility that I actually did utilize/install that as a part of the rooting process. Would it be possible or easier to go right to the Mini-SDK in this case?
I take it that you don't have a rom downloaded already - correct me if I'm wrong.
I've downloaded Cyanogenmod (cm-11-20140804-SNAPSHOT-M9-m8.zip). I'd like to try out something beyond stock, if possible (I like to tinker around). Is this acceptable?
Thank you so much for your help; it means a lot.
If you had to get ViperOneM8 1.7.1 then in main settings while running, choose About, Software updates and get 1.8.0.
All of the T-Mobile stuff, including wifi calling, works with both 1.8.0 and 2.3.0 Viper.
You're entirely welcome!
I strongly recommend getting the Viper rom (a stock version) before trying out cm - let's make sure that we have everything going for you before trying a major variation.
From your hboot version (thank you! :)) I want you to go for the Viper 1.7.1 as described above and then the 1.8.0 update as described.
OK to go get the Mini-SDK, it works, doesn't take a lot of space and you can sort out the pc later.
I'm out the door.
Don't panic.
Stay loose.
You'll soon be working.
I had to leave the computer for a bit. Step by step, this is what I've done:
HTC One M8 - Team Venom
Okay, ViperOneM8_2.3.0.zip downloaded.
Put it in the same folder as your adb on your pc.
Like this?
Get into TWRP by going to RECOVERY from your hboot.
OK, done.
Mount button - make sure that /data is selected.
Done, too. Should 'system' be selected as well?
Connect phone to pc.
Done.
Open command window where adb and rom zip file are, and in the command window -
Command window meaning adb.exe? Whenever I hit that, that window quickly opens and closes. It looked like a command line interface.
adb push NAME-OF-YOUR-ROM.ZIP /sdcard/NAME-OF-YOUR-ROM.ZIP
And please, use the actual name of the ViperOneM8 zip file and not literally "NAME-OF-YOUR-ROM.ZIP" like others have at that point lol. ;)
Update:
Command line displaying that it successfully pushed the zip file through to my phone. I'm seeing the Viper Terms of Use page now and will update you further in a few minutes. Hopefully this works out!
