T-moblie Acquired By ATT...We're Screwed!

Senator Blumenthal Calls for Vigorous Oversight, Net Neutrality Conditions On Proposed AT&T–T-Mobile Merger

Monday, March 21, 2011

Senator Richard Blumenthal - United States Senator for Connecticut: Press - Press Release

Apparently the good Senator agrees with those of us who feel that this is a bad deal. And wonder of wonders...he used the "M" word too! Senator Blumenthal has also mentioned the "anti-trust" word...It is about to get interesting folks!

F.Y.I. I started this topic. If you are unhappy here you can take your petty infantile attempts at insulting the good people here (by insinuating that we couldn't AFFORD to be gouged by ATT - ROTFLOL) elsewhere. And indeed, the discussion can move forward without incident.

Here is what the Senator had to say:

(Hartford, CT) – Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) released the following statement today in the wake of the announcement of an agreement by AT&T to purchase T-Mobile USA, which would create an entity that would create the largest mobile company in the national wireless carrier market:
“The proposed merger between AT&T and T-Mobile potentially raises serious antitrust issues that must be addressed before the agreement is allowed to go forward. Regulatory approval should contain strict conditions to ensure that consumer concerns about cost, access, choice, and competition are adequately addressed.

“Moreover, such high wireless market concentration raises serious potential net neutrality concerns that should be addressed. The largest mobile network in the nation must not be allowed to limit access to content in a discriminatory manner.

“I join several of my Senate colleagues in calling for close scrutiny of this proposed merger, and will continue to examine legislative avenues to safeguard choice and competition in the wireless market, in addition to promoting net neutrality principles across the internet for all American consumers, regardless of network.”

Read the actual documents from both ATT and tmobile and see what it is called. It's stated officially as an Aqcuisition of tmobile by ATT not a merger. An Aqcuisition is a purchase or take over. A merger is a melding of the two. Once it is finished tmobile will cease to exist an ATT will be left, that is an buyout or take over not a merger.

Ps there is nothing good about senator blumenthal he might as well be a socialist

Senator Blumenthal was elected by the people. He holds an honored office and trumps you as a source. The game is on - He said *several* of his senatorial colleagues are looking into this to scrutinize it for Anti-trust and other points of interest.

I am grateful that the Senators have gotten on top of this issue with quickness. I urge you to write to your Senators and Congresspersons to keep this issue on the forefront of their agendas.

It may go through and it may not. At least the PEOPLE should have a chance to be heard... it will be the people's dollars that support this in its final analysis.

What does that mean he was elected by the people lol. All these senators and congressmen have been elected by the people and look at the mess our deficit is in. His opinion is no more valid than mine just because he has senator before his name

Well i don't care what they call it as long as its blocked.

And as for simple freedom as an option that is a NO it uses t-mobiles towers and will die if at&t buys t-mobile.

So all the options left would be sprint,VZW,cricket, metro pcs if in there service area and all the mnvo's like net 10,straight talk, virgin mobile, boost mobile,i-wireless,tracfone,ECT.

Also its not really about who can and cant afford at&t its more like who would want to pay up to 50 bucks more a month for a plan close to what they have now with t-mobile.

That's all well and good but if and that's a BIG if it doesn't go through tmobile will just shut down. Deutch telecom is not interested in running tmobile any longer its been up for sale for Five years. Now back to the acquisition its gonna go through even Verizon CEO says its gonna happen and I quote " its a waste of time and resources to oppose the inevitable "

Senator Blumenthal is answerable to his constituency. He holds an office where he is responsible to protect those whom he serves within his power to do so. His opinion holds more weight due to his position...I would consider his learned opinion over some nebulous Internet person any day.

You need to go get G.W. to correct the mess...it's his mess. He received the country with a surplus and handed it over with a 1.2 Trillion dollar deficit. These newly elected guys are left to clean up his mess. smh

Some of the money that bought this deal represents global customer input across all of DT. However, a portion of the monies that will sustain ATT going forward represent the labor of THIS nation of people who's hard-earned dollars they are. If we decided to walk, no customers mean no income from those who leave. ATT isn't just buying towers, they are buying paying customers who will increase their revenue.

Bottom line, this deal reeks and the Senators know it. Bravo! To the Senators for stepping up to field this one for the people.

@LordBane AMEN!!!

Holy crap what kool aid lol. I'm sure you watch msnbc and think that's news too lol you hold men in way too high of a regard.
Ps this economic problem stemmed from Clinton and fannie and Freddie pushing banks to give mortgages to people who couldn't afford it. Stop holding men to such high standards and please don't assume that just because they are " learned" they are smart or honorable.

Kool Aid???

Now. The topic is that this ATT deal doesn't look good and fairly reeks for consumers.

Holy shit you think 9/11 was an inside job ??
Oh and then after that you tout a senator lol talk about hypocracy.

Back to the topic , it looks good for me and many people I talk to there are even people on this forum who agree. Just the loud minority is louder than the majority. I'm also the only one willing to discuss this while others shy away

So do you guys think that AT&T will pick up the Sidekick and myTouch brands and continue them? I'm doubting but hopefully so...

Simple Mobile which uses Tmo pipes (as I stated in another post) is a Bring Your Own Phone company. You get unlimited everything for $69 supposedly. I get that rate with Tmo direct. But it is great to have an alternative of sorts. Btw, IMHO ATT is not slightly higher, they are markedly higher:

Nation Unlimited Talk Plan $69.99 per month
Mid-Tier DataPro 2G SmartPhone Data Plan $25.00 per month
(If you exceed 2gigs its $10 per 1G of overages!)
Unlimited Texting w/Mobile2Mobile - $20.00
Mobile Insurance $4.99 per month - Subject to a $50 or $125 non-refundable deductible
Roadside Assistance $2.99

So. To replace my wonderful Tmo Unlimited Everything @ $70 per month will cost me $122.97 per month with ATT. That's a whopping $52.97 more PER MONTH!!!

I could do something else with that $53 per month:cool:
If you bring your own phone - how can they charge insurance?

I've got 3 phones - all talk and text and one with internet. 2 of my users are talk only. I pay less than you. I'm EM+
I can also do with the 200m per month. My wifi at home is faster. I don't need roadside assistance. Nor do I need unlimited minutes. I have 1500 and could very easily do with 750.

I agree its interesting. I will say this everytime a big acquisition like this comes up there is opposition and questions. That's good and what's need but this is gonna happen. at&t will divest whatever it needs to for this to go through. Verizon CEO stating that they won't bother because its inevitable shows it will come to fruition. If the biggest challenger to ATT won't step up its writing on the wall

I posted the corresponding data from ATT to match my current plan to illustrate the difference btw their exhorbitant comparable rates and Tmo's excellent ones. You can go to their site to check what it would mean for your situation.

What I found was that their rates were as high for one line as it would cost to add an additional new line to my mix with Tmo. Which is totally ludicrous. Those were the kinds of rates I paid in the days of Cellular One.

What I love about it is that the government is getting involved early. Watch-groups are next. As I said, it may happen but it won't happen without major scrutiny, which is VERY good.

Tmo says that it could take 12 months so, I don't have to shop around *today* and I'm sure that there will be sweeteners from the other carriers to entice us to switch.
